Foreword

The preceding volume, Minnesota Swedes: The EmigrationFrom Trolle Ljungby to Goodhue County 1855-1912 (1996),describes the sending area, its history, the emigration pro-cess, as well as the receiving area with its agriculture, religion, politics, demographics, and assimilation. It containsletters to the homeland as well as narratives of interviewswith one actual immigrant and with 39 descendants of otherimmigrants from Trolle Ljungby Parish. The noble estate, bythe same name as the parish, owns most of the land in thearea. At the time of the emigration, nearly all theparishioners depended on the land baron for their livelihood. The estate extends beyond the borders of the parish. In 1880,the population of the parish was 1,929. Of 1,086 emigrantsfrom the parish, 383 were male or female farm servants.

Minnesota Swedes Volume II: Trolle Ljungby Families inGoodhue County contains the names and data from primarilypublic records for about 320 emigrants and their familymembers born in the United States. It is a project that couldgo on and on. One is never totally satisfied. However, I havebeen encouraged to make my findings available to thepublic. By publishing the manuscript on the Internet, I hopethat it will be helpful to others who wish to pursue researchabout the same individuals.

Descendants with family trees may submit them to GoodhueCounty Historical Society, 1166 Oak Street, Red Wing, MN55066 (www.goodhistory.org), Trolle Ljungby Parish, SE-290 34 Fjälkinge, Sweden, or Bibliteket (the Library) SE-295 00 Bromölla, Sweden. In Trolle Ljungby, there is aninterest in finding out what happened to all the emigrantsfrom the parish.

The material that I have gathered about the Trolle Ljungbyfamilies could be used for genealogies and family histories, and also for various data about this particular immigrantgroup. I have already determined that the farm owners, whom I traced in Vasa Township, kept their farms for a longtime and often handed them down to their heirs. Severalfarms were still owned by family members in 1996. Thefarm retention rate was the highest among the immigrantswho had arrived before 1870. In that group, I found that 82percent of the farms were still owned by the same families in1900.

Most of the birth records for Trolle Ljungby list theoccupation of the parents. I studied those records for about200 children who were 16 years old or older at the time ofemigration, and found that 105 of the fathers (more thanhalf) were listed as åbo, meaning that they leased a relativelylarge farm. The next most common occupation was torpare, which meant that the father rented a very small farm. First-time fathers were sometimes listed as dräng (farmhand).

The positions of dräng and torpare were often stepping-stones to becoming åbo. The high rate of tenant farmerscompared to other occupations may explain - at least in part -why the immigrants in my study persevered and becamerelatively successful as farmers in Vasa Township, GoodhueCounty. Many had grown up on tenant farms that had beenoperated by family members for generations. Some weretenant farmers themselves, which made it easier for them tofinance their emigration. They were accustomed to relativestability in their home parish. When they fulfilled theirdream about a farm of their own in America, their trainingand steadfastness were valuable assets. For those who didnot pursue a career in farming there were other opportunities. The emigrants’ background included skills in many differentcrafts.

Trolle Ljungby is located in Kristianstad län in the provinceof Skåne in southern Sweden. The name of the parish wasVästra Ljungby between 1830 and 1884. Before 1830, it wasjust Ljungby. Goodhue County is located in southeasternMinnesota. The county seat is Red Wing. Having enjoyedwriting about Swedish emigration history for several years, Iselected these two areas without any special attachment toeither one.

The taped interviews that my late husband, LennartSetterdahl, and I recorded in Minnesota for this researchproject have been deposited at Svenska Emigrantinstitutet inVäxjö, Sweden. The institute also has microfilm copies ofthe Swedish-American church records and Swedish parishrecords.

Swedish Genealogical Research

The following information is necessary for successfulresearch in Sweden about emigrants:

Name used in Sweden at the time of emigrationDate of birthParish of birth

Other helpful information:Names of parents and other family membersYear and place of emigration

The original records for Skåne through 1896 are atLandsarkivet in Lund, Fack 2016, SE-220 02 Lund, Sweden.Microfilm copies are available also at other researchfacilities. Records dated after 1896 have not yet beenmicrofilmed, and are being kept at the respective parishoffices for the time being. Within ten years, they will betransferred to the various landsarkiv. Presently, the TrolleLjungby records are at the following address: Trolle LjungbyPrästgård, SE-290 34 Fjälkinge, Sweden.

Introduction

The entries start with extracts from Swedish-Americanchurch records in Goodhue County and a few other sources. The primary, alphabetized names are the ones used at thetime of emigration, except that one s has been omitted innames ending with ‘son.’ The same variation of the namewas also entered in Swedish-American church records at thetime of reception. The death dates have been culled fromvarious American records. When the dates in Swedish-American church books did not correspond with records inSweden, I have relied more on the Swedish dates. The placenames and numbers listed after the birth and emigration dataare villages and farm numbers in Trolle Ljungby parish.Although I have searched for all the families in the censusrecords for Goodhue County, I could have missed a fewindividuals. It was especially difficult to trace women whomarried and changed not only their surnames, but also theirfirst names. Men also changed or Americanized their names(See Cross-references.) In case, where the dates of birth areincomplete or uncertain, one faces a problem with identi-fication. When a move to another county or even state wentunrecorded in the Swedish-American church records, thetrack usually ends, unless a descendant can give moreinformation. Plat books and population censuses werehelpful, but identification can be difficult. The data has beenabbreviated as much as possible. I have recorded my entriesat long intervals, resulting in deviations in style.

There are separate entries for all individuals, who, accordingto Swedish-American church records or other sources, emigrated from Trolle Ljungby, or were born there. A few ofthe individuals have not been found in either Trolle Ljungbybirth or emigration records. However, they could still havelived in Trolle Ljungby at one time. Children born inAmerica are listed with their parents.

Page 18: Minnesota Swedes Volume II: Trolle Ljungby Families … · Minnesota Swedes Volume II: Trolle Ljungby Families in ... Nelson, Andrew, see Nilson, Anders ... Minnesota Swedes Volume

10

Of the research material that I have used, the Swedish parishrecords are the most reliable. The Swedish-American churchrecords are usually correct if they are based on Swedish exitpapers, although the dates can be difficult to decipher. I havechosen to list the year before the month and the day, as theyear is usually correct. However, the 1900 Federal Censusschedules list the month and year of birth, which I havecopied in that order. The American census records are theleast exact. Names were misspelled or misunderstood. Toavoid mistakes, Swedes often changed their names if theywere difficult to pronounce and spell for Americans. Theyalso started to give their new-born children first and secondnames that were common in their new homeland. The draw-back was that Swedish-born pastors did not always knowhow to spell American names when entering them inbaptismal and membership records. Generally, I havecopied the personal names as they appear in the originalrecords. No doubt, there will be discrepancies whencomparisons are made with family records.
