2 – Mind Over Milwaukee

Now in its 59th season, Milwaukee Repertory Theater is dedicated to providing the highest level of professional theater to Milwaukee and Wisconsin in addition to offering a wide range of educational and community programs. Located in the heart of downtown Milwaukee, the Patty and Jay Baker Theater Complex is a cleverly-converted power generation plant that houses Milwaukee Repertory Theater consisting of three theaters: the Quadracci Powerhouse (720 seats), the Steimke Studio (205 seats) and the Stackner Cabaret (118 seats), which is also a full-service restaurant and bar. Together, these spaces offer a variety of staging options from compelling dramas, powerful classics, award-winning contemporary works to full-scale musicals and comedies. Milwaukee Repertory Theater is committed to creating plays that are meaningful and relevant to the society we live in – plays that are challenging, visceral and engage the community through the issues they explore. With the start of the 2012/13 Season, The Rep expanded its Artistic Family to 19 Associate Artists. This new creative initiative will build upon the indelible legacy of The Rep’s Acting Company and now will expand to include directors, writers, designers, musicians and actors. This group will help participate and advise in choosing plays The Rep produces as well as other initiatives. They will contribute to the work seen on all Rep stages, read scripts, engage in education projects, along with other duties as well as serve as advocates for The Rep in their home communities across the nation. The Rep has long been committed to a core group of artists and this new ensemble will continue The Rep’s commitment to giving voice to a broad spectrum of cultural, educational and community experiences that serve and reflect the diversity of perspectives found in this region.

HOW TO TELL IF SOMEONE IS LYING5 Ways to Spot a Liar

Consider this your personal Lie Detector

Let’s face it, if we were good at spotting liars, we wouldn’t have so many exes, and we probably wouldn’t have fallen for at least some of those get-skinny-quick diet fads.

Researchers asked 51 people to complete two exercises that measured their ability to identify and craft lies in social situations. The results? Being a good liar gave people about a 20 percent boost in being able to detect the lies of others, says study author Geoffrey

Bird, PhD, a psychologist at the University of London. In other words, it really does seem to take one to know one when it comes to fibbers.

That’s good news for the BS-inclined, but what about the more honest among us? Here are five signs to look out for to keep from getting duped:

1. Inconsistent behavior – Watch for sudden changes in gestures or speech patterns, says behavioral psychologist Marc Salem, PhD, author of Mind Games. If a typical slow talker suddenly becomes speedy, that’s a red flag.

2. A too-steady gaze – It’s natural for a person to break eye contact when thinking or listening intently. What’s not natural? When a person’s gaze is too constant, which means they’re either not paying attention – or deliberately trying to earn your trust. Both are signs of insincerity, Dr. Salem says.

Does Everybody Lie?

3. Written tells – An easy way to tell if that Match.com profile is too good to be true: Avoiding first-person pronouns – words like “I” or “my” – probably means Mr. Too-Good-To-Be-True is trying to distance himself from his untruths, says Dr. Salem, who also researches dishonesty in online profiles. Short sentences lacking any elaboration are another sign of dishonesty, he says.

4. Mouth muffling – Coughing, clearing the throat frequently, or any other gesture that involves covering the mouth can indicate a person is trying to hide something, says Dr. Salem.

5. A quick smile – When someone smiles genuinely, her eyes light up and her cheeks and eyebrows rise along with the corners of her mouth, says Dr. Salem. Real delight also takes a few seconds to fade. A fake smile, on the other hand, appears in an instant, and disappears just as quickly.
