is no better way to enjoy a round of golf than walking with a caddie. I understand that physical limitations require many golfers to play their golf out of a golf cart, but you can still support the culture of caddying by taking a fore caddie. Divided four ways, the cost is minimal and your group will be providing oppor- tunities for a Moraine caddie to work. As in the past, on weekends and Holidays during the 2017 season before 10:00am, a fore caddie will be placed in each group with two golf carts in use unless all of the caddies get walking loops in the morning. We are making positive impacts on many young people’s lives. Your Golf Professional is living proof of this. ank you for your continuing support of our caddie program.

Please enjoy the month of March at Moraine….Here comes Spring 2017.

Brent Sipe, PGA Head Professional

We ocially welcome Spring 2017 this month…..March 20th to be exact. But before then we will turn the clocks forward on March 12th as Daylight Savings begins. Sand-wiched in between these two March events is the Host Professional’s 52nd birthday on Friday, March 17th. So, you know what that means….March 17th-18th-19th will be Brent’s Big Birthday Sale! All merchandise in stock will be 52% o these three days. In honor of the 13th anniversary of my 39th birthday, the NEW 2017 Pro V1 and NEW 2017 Pro V1X golf balls will be $39 per dozen on this weekend only as well. I am certain spring apparel will have arrived by March 17th as well as Maui Jim Sunglasses….FootJoy and Titleist golf gloves….ECCO, Adidas, FootJoy and Under Armour shoes….Ping, Sun Mountain, and Titleist golf bags….Ping, Titleist, Callaway, and Taylormade golf clubs ….Imperial and Pukka head wear….Sterling crested glassware….Vineyard Vines neck ties….and much more. If you are in town, please stop by and see us. Heckling, as well as shopping, is welcomed.

e 2017 Spring Golf Mailing will be mailed to your homes mid March. is informative mailing provides information on a number of events, activities, and oerings here at the club. Tournament information on the 72nd Moraine Invita-tional, June 15th-16th-17th, will be included in this mail-ing. I hope you will spend some time reading and reviewing the material included in the Spring Golf Mailing. As always, please reach out to me with any questions or if you need any clarity on any of the information received. As in the past, you will receive emails from time to time from me throughout the golf season and the Moraine Piper and the Moraine website, www.morainecountryclub.com, are both great resources for information as well. e 2017 Member Directory is a wonderful resource for information and contact information. You will receive the 2017 Member Directory as well this month. is publication has returned to a very comprehensive guide to club policies and expecta-tions. It is a wonderful reference for all members to refer to throughout the entire year. Please enjoy.

If you know any young candidates for our caddie program, please have them contact us. We will begin hiring and training new caddies for the 2017 season in late March and early April. Jonathan McEldowney will return as our Caddie Master for the 2017 season. Our caddie program is one of our great traditions at Moraine. In my opinion, there

Winery of the MonthLocated on the grounds of a historic equestrian center, Black Stallion Estate Winery is the latest addition to the distinguished collection of wineries in the Oak Knoll District of Napa Valley. Each of the varietals that is produced is handcrafted and carefully blended from small vineyard lots. Black Stallion wines are elegant and distinctive. This month we will be featuring their Chardonnay, Cabernet, Pinot Noir as well as their bold and complex Transcendent Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine is rich with blackberry and violet aromas and layered tastes of black fruit, hints of toffee and mocha. Transcendent pairs perfectly with our Allen Brothers Filet.

MVP Highlight of UD Flyer Alumni, Moraine Member and Past President, Dan Sadlier

Former Dayton star Dan Sadlier didn’t know what he wanted to do for a living after finishing a six-year stint playing professionally overseas, and, like a lot of ex-Flyers looking for career advice, he sought out his former coach, Don Donoher.Well connected in the community, Donoher called Frank Doorley, the vice president of Winter’s Bank who helped raise the funds to build UD arena. Doorley made no promises, saying the bank wasn’t hiring but he’d give Sadlier an interview. After the meeting, though, he called Donoher to express his thanks for sending the player his way. “He told me, ‘We don’t have anything here, but we’re hiring him. He’s an impressive kid,’ ” Donoher recalled. That’s something the coach new all along. Before working his way up to becoming president and CEO of Fifth Third Bank - Western Ohio, Sadlier had a productive career with the Flyers, earning the White-Allen Most Valuable Player award as a senior in 1968-69 and making the UD Hall of Fame. But he almost was overlooked as a high school prospect by Dayton, even though he played just up the road at Lima Central Catholic for ex-Flyer Don Lane. “Growing up in Lima, we saw an awful lot of the Flyers because Channel 7 had a strong signal that we could get, and they carried a lot of UD games on television,” Sadlier said. “We didn’t have any idea what kind of athlete we were getting,” said Donoher. “You wouldn’t equate toughness with him. But he got tough.” Donoher may have had a little something to do with that.Sadlier was a solid foul shooter, and he excelled enough in other areas that he took over a starting spot early in his sophomore year. He helped the Flyers reach 1967 NCAA finals, win the 1968 NIT and make another trip to the NCAAs as a senior.Though he was overshadowed by veterans Don May and Bobby Joe Hooper, Sadlier’s contributions were vital in that magic run to the national title game. Then in 1968-69, with May and Hooper gone, the offense ran through Sadlier, who is 10th at UD for career field-goal accuracy at 53 percent. He averaged 18.2 points and 9.3 rebounds as a senior as the Flyers went 20-7.Sadlier retired from Fifth Third in 2005 and is still a very active UD fan. He stays involved in the community, serving on numerous boards, including the UD trustees, and volunteering for charitable efforts through the years. He and his wife, Susan, a native of England who he met while playing basketball in France, enjoy spending time with their children and grandchildren and the many friends they’ve made along their journey.

While I'll never be able to match the wit and communicating skills of Bob Davidson, remember his wonderful, humorous articles in the then Moraine monthly/quarterly “Piper”, I will try to relay some fond memories of the club since our family joined in 1956.

As you may, or may not know, Board of Governors President John Haley has assembled a group of members to be the “Committee on Moraine History”. Along with John, we have Sonnie Kasch, Brad Bachman, Larry Hayes, yours truly, Sam King, our FIRST RATE golf professional Brent Sipe and, for historical guidance, Brady Kress, President of History Dayton. (If you haven’t recently visited Carillon Historical Park, you are in for a real treat, enjoy the signicant changes, additions, and improvements to the park which Brady has instituted since coming to Dayton).

Where to start? I have so many fond memories of my time at Moraine it’s dicult to single out particular episodes. I do remember very well that on May 30, 1956, the pool opened for the season. (en the pool actually opened on Memorial Day, May 30th, regardless of the day on which it fell). ere were three young men hanging around the front gate to see who could be rst in the pool for the 1956 season. Dick Herbruck, Rodney Boren and I were the contestants. As they were already in swim suits, they beat me into the pool, but I honestly can’t remember who was actually rst. In those days, Moraine had a locker room attendant, so I visited for the rst time to meet Gene (?) who opened a locker for me. (In my early days, John Scheidler was the Pool Manager and many of the employees were students of his from Wilbur Wright High School. Anybody remember Danny Weller, Fran Kronauge, Don Young, then starting le guard on e

Ohio State football team, to name a few?) As luck would have it, I remember that open-ing day was ruined by a vicious thunderstorm in the aernoon.

It wasn’t too much aer we joined the club that I was to begin my love for the game of golf.

Tommy Bryant was the pro with Larry Shute the assistant. Tommy’s sons Bob and Tommy Jr. were oen at the club and more than willing to give FREE tips to a youngster just taking up the game. My mother Helen Heitz, you older people all remember her, thought that I should call him Mr. Bryant, but Tommy didn’t seem to care that a fourth grader called him by his rst name. Aer all, most of my early train-ing at the club came from a real pioneer, Colin Campbell.

Every summer morning Colin’s father George, a true Moraine story in his own right, would take Colin and me to the club for our daily outings. (George used to drive onto

the course, up the road which was then on the le side of No. 3, and down onto the fairway looking for mushrooms!! I wondered if all members were allowed to do that or just the son of the course archi-tect.) Colin and I would play nine holes in the morning, go to the pool for my grilled cheese (25

cents) and a small root beer (10 cents), all I was allowed to order, while Colin enjoyed two cheese burgers and French fries. Believe it or not, in those days Colin was skinny as a rail and rarely nished the rst burger, let alone the second and the fries. About 2:30 or so, we would head out for our second nine. We oen ran into very nice “older” members, like Frank Kuhns, Jimmy Huber, George Berry, who would let us play along with them. I remember that we were always terribly unhappy on Tuesday morning as it was “Ladies Day” where the course was strictly limited to just the women of the club. Aer golf the now Members Porch was packed with women having lunch. Tuesday aernoons, Colin and I were allowed to play, though, we only got in nine holes.

For the time being, I think it’s time to bring this rocket down to earth. However, we strongly encourage the 21 members who I believe still remember the 1950’s, I counted them this morning in the club directory, but I could be wrong, to let Nancy or me know about a fond Moraine memory from your past. Just contact Nancy or feel free to email me at [email protected]. (I am sooooo busy these days, but I somehow nd the time to read my emails). e committee will gladly share them in future “Pipers”. (Tom Grabeman, are you listening? Your grandfather Eddie was the club manager when we rst joined and how could I forget his marvelous “How’s Everybody?” when rst greet-ing him).
