“Doing community service not only benefits me, but it
benefits others as well”
Johnnie L. Morris ‘19 "My service through the Adams Program has given me
the ability to have a meaningful impact on my community. The condition of the underprivileged in the Atlanta
community is dark and desolate, but the Bonner/Adams programs are a bright beacon of light from which the
Atlanta community has come to depend on and cherish." Frederick Slaughter ‘20

Program Overview cont’d
The schools and community adjacent to Morehouse College owe much to the Adams Scholars for their steadfast commitment to serving as advocates for children, the homeless, the elderly and others whose voices often go unheard. Adams Scholars are leaders in the movement toward positive social change and
community redevelopment.
In 2005, staff from the Office of Community Service, along with 20 Adams Scholars made an unforgettable trip to Los Angeles to engage is community service on Emma & Joe Adams’ turf. Arranged by several Morehouse College alumni, Adams Scholars served at a number of agencies in Watts and surrounding communities. The experiences proved eye-opening for Adams Scholars, as it gave them the opportunity to
forge west-coast partnerships.
After having the opportunity to meet personally Emma & Joe Adams, the scholars were thrilled to embrace the legacy of this phenomenal duo. With mutual respect and admiration, the BOCS staff was pleased to announce the continued support of the Adams to the tune of an additional two million dollars. The program was now to remain in perpetuity, one of Morehouse College’s premier service

The Adams Scholarship Program is named
after Mrs. & Mr. Emma and Joe Adams of Los
Angeles, California. Mr. Joe Adams had been
the long time friend and manager for the late
singer/songwriter Mr. Ray Charles who was
also charitable supporter of Morehouse
College. The Adams and Mr. Charles were
all recipients of Honorary Degrees from
Morehouse College. The Adams’ generosity
toward Morehouse college has been evident
since 1994, when they first began to make
annual donations to the Emma & Joe Adams
Scholarship Program This program supports
28 students who demonstrate an outstanding
commitment to community service, and who
seek to balance that commitment with
academic excellence.
In 1998, at a Morehouse on the Move
function in Los Angeles, the Adams announced
that they would grant Morehouse an
additional $1.5 million over the following five
years with a considerable portion being
earmarked for the Leadership Center where
the program is physically housed.
