Thomas J. Blocker Summer Scholars Program-2006

Dates: June 10 - July 22, 2006

History: Since its inception in 1974, the Morehouse College Health Careers Opportunity Program has produced over 1000 physicians and 300 dentists.

Overview: TheOfficeofHealthProfessionsatMorehouseCollegewill conduct a rigorous six-week health careers summer program for pre-freshman who have been accepted and plan to attend Morehouse College in the fall of 2006. The major objectives of the program are to improve reading, writing, math.

Sponsor: Students and Parents Responsibility

Eligibility: High school seniors who have applied, been accepted and plan to enroll at Morehouse College and Spelman College in the fall of 2006, are eligible to apply for this program. These students should have at least a 1000/1600 on the old SAT or 1500/2400 on the new SAT or a 22 ACT score, a minimum GPA 3.0, and an interest in a health career. Students must be U.S. Citizens.

Housing: All participants are required to live on campus.

Curriculum: Students will be involved in six courses that meet Monday through Friday. The courses are college Math, English, Problem Solving in Science, College Adjustment, and Contributions of African and African Americans in Medicine and Science. Students may receive Morehouse College credit.

Cost: $2,250.00 covers the cost of room/board and books. May 30, 2006 ($1,000.00 non-refundable) Remaining Fee: $1,250.00 due on or before June 12, 2006

HCOP Morehouse / Spelman Pre-Freshman Summer Science Program

Dates: June 10 - July 22, 2006

Overview: TheOfficeofHealthProfessionsatMorehouse CollegeandTheHealthCareersOfficeatSpelmanCollege will conduct a rigorous six-week health careers summer program for pre-freshman who have been accepted and plan to attend Morehouse College and Spelman College in the fall of 2006. The program will provide enhancement activities for thirty-two (32) students. The major objectives of the program are to provide active learning/problem solving laboratories and enrichment activities in verbal reasoning, problem solving and quantative skills, biology, chemistry, calculus and computer science. Each campus health careers officewillprovidecounseling,mentoringandothercollege level services peculiar to their population of students.

Pre-Freshman Summer Program (PSP)

Dates: June 10 - July 22, 2006

Overview: Program participants can get a head start in their college studies by taking enrichment courses in English, Mathematics, and Reading. A grade of “B” or better in each college credit course is required in PSP to earn credit at Morehouse College. Non-credit developmental courses designed for college preparation are also offered. College orientation sessions on various topics, including making the transition from high school to college, coping with stress, and academic planning are offered. Weekly lectures are held on topicsandeventssignificantinthedevelopmentofblack people throughout the African Diaspora, as well as topics and concerns that are of particular interest to African American males. The program provides tours to points of interest in the Atlanta area.

Sponsor: Student and parent responsibility

Eligibility: Students must be rising seniors in high school or students who willbeenteringcollegeforthefirsttimeinthefall;submit the application form, high school transcript, and college entrance examination scores (SAT, PSAT, ACT, or PACT) on or before May 2; must have completed at least four years of English and three years of Mathematics through Algebra II,* and have at least a 2.5 grade point average. *Rising high school seniors should have completed at least three years of English and two years of Mathematics and meet other requirements listed above.

Housing: PSP participants must live on campus in Brazeal Hall.

Curriculum: Tentative course schedule: English, History, Mathematics (010, 100, 120 or 161), Reading, and Sociology.

Coca-Cola Pre-College Leadership Program“Creating the Beloved Community: An Orientation to Ethical Leadership”

Dates: June 17 - June 23, 2006

Overview: The Coca-Cola Pre-College Leadership Program is designed to introduce participants to the traits, skills and behaviors necessary for effective 21st century leadership. Upon completion of the program, participants will have an appreciation for personal responsibility, empathy for others and a vision for the future. The program is limited to thirty participants. Financial support for the program is provided by The Coca-Cola Foundation.

Sponsor: Coca-Cola/Leadership Center at Morehouse College Eligibility: Rising high school male juniors and seniors or students who have applied to Morehouse College. Must have a 3.0 GPA or better.

Housing: All participants are required to live on campus

Curriculum: The curriculum , developed and owned by VisionQuest Association, Inc., focuses on personal and interpersonal leadership skills with an emphasis on the development of character, civility and community. The curriculum is highly interactive, utilizing indoor and outdoor group activities.

Seminars &Field Trips: Students will visit Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Non- violent Social Change and the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site, as well as participate in a team building ropes course at Project Adventure, Inc.

Morehouse CollegeAtlanta Metro Area Upward Bound Program

Dates: June 5, 2006 – July 14, 2006

Overview: The Morehouse College Atlanta Metropolitan Area Upward Bound Program is designed to serve 81 eligible students, currently enrolled in targeted high schools in three different counties, Fulton, Dekalb, and Clayton. The program enhances study habits and collaborative skills for those potential stu- dents who need (help) assistance. The summer program is designed based on the written proposal of the Department of Education for six (6) consecutive weeks. Participants in the program will have the opportunity to work in various areas as well as in the computer lab. They will receive a comprehen- sive assistance and guidance from their instructors and coun- selors. In the afternoon tutorial service and various activities are conducted until 4:00 pm.

Sponsor: The U.S. Department of Education

Eligibility: Applicants must be currently enrolled in the 9th and 10th grade in the targeted schools. Applicants must meet the federalgovernmentguidelines,2/3lowincome,firstgenera- tion,and1/3lowincomeorfirstgenerationonly,andother related documents.

Housing: The Morehouse College Classical Upward Bound Program is a non-residential program.

Curriculum: The program provides English/Composition, Literature, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Foreign Language, and Computer Literacy. Students will be required to conduct research in various areas.

Cost: Free

Math/Science Southeastern Regional Institute

Dates: June 12 - July 21, 2006

Overview: The Morehouse College Upward Bound Math/Science South eastern Regional Institute is designed to provide 50 eligible students currently enrolled in high schools throughout the southeastern region of the United States an intensive six-week summer curriculum. These states include Georgia, Florida, Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina, Kentucky, and Mississippi. This program assists students in developing criticalthinking,scientific,analyticalskills,andeffective expressions. Students will be given the opportunity to work in various labs and get hands-on computer experience. Students will have the exposure to a variety of science, math, and engineering careers. Students also will experience innovative instructional methodologies.

Sponsor: The U.S. Department of Education

Curriculum: Investigate careers in Math, Science and Engineering. Core curriculum includes computer programming, technical writing and research projects.

Eligibility: Students in tenth and eleventh grade and a 3.0 grade point average,lowincomeorfirstgeneration,resideinAL,GA,FL, NC, SC, TN, MS, KY

Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program

Dates: June 5 - July 28, 2006

Overview: The Morehouse College Ronald E. McNair Summer Research Program is designed to assist Morehouse College studentswhomeetthefinancialrequirementsmandatedby theU.S.DepartmentofEducation,andwhoarefirst-genera- tion college students, in preparing to pursue doctoral study inscientific,mathematicalandcomputersciencedisciplines. The primary goal is to increase the number of Morehouse College students who attend graduate school and pursue doc- toral degrees in the areas of biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering, mathematics, physics, and psychology.

Thespecificaimsoftheprogramareto: (1) provide opportunities for research at Morehouse College andotheraffiliatedinstitutions,suchasEmoryUniversity, Duke University, Morehouse School of Medicine, Georgia Tech, Clark Atlanta University, etc.; (2) provide instruction in directed research; (3) provide seminars to prepare students for doctoral study; (4) provide tutoring, as needed; (5) employ faculty from the institution engaged in a program of research related activities; (6) provide activities in counseling that will assiststudentstosecureadmissionsandfinancialassistance for enrollment in graduate school, including GRE preparation andfinancialaidworkshops. Curriculum: Students participate in a full-time eight-week research project leadingtoawrittenfinalreportthatispresentedatthe Morehouse College Ronald E. McNair Summer Research Symposium. Scholars gain summer research experience in a university, governmental or pharmaceutical laboratory. McNairScholarswillparticipateinafive-hourperweek enrichment course which assists students in a successful graduate education.

Eligibility: Students must be rising juniors and seniors who attend Morehouse College and are interested in receiving a Ph.D. in biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering, mathematics, physics and psychology. Applicants must be in good standing with the institution with at least a 2.5 GPA.

Housing: Room and board is provided for those scholars who choose to reside on-campus.

Cost: There is no cost to participate in this program. Scholars will receive a $2,400.00 stipend an on-campus housing for conducting research for eight (8) weeks.

NYSP (National Youth Sports Program)

Dates: June 5 - June 30, 2006

Overview: This program gives at-risk youth an opportunity to participate in a sport skill instruction and academic enrichment camp.

Sponsor: Morehouse College and National Youth Sports Program

Eligibility: Boys and girls between the ages of 10 and 16. (Children nine years old may be enrolled if they turn 10 by August 31st of the program year. Children 17 years old may be enrolled if they turn 17 by May 31 of the program year.)

Housing: Non-residential

Curriculum: Physicalfitnessenhancementwithanacademicenrichment component in areas of math, science, drug and alcohol awareness and enrichment.

Project: IMHOTEP

Dates: May 20 - August 4, 2006

Overview: Project:IMHOTEP is a 11-week intership program designed for undergraduates and graduate students pursuing careers in public health, giving students the opportunity to train with Centers for Disease Contol and Prevention

Sponsor: Public Health Sciences Institute of Morehouse College, which is supported by the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC ) researchers.

Eligibility: Applicants must be a junior, senior or recent graduate and have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.7 or better, as well as be an underrepresented minority.

Housing: All students are required to live on campus at no cost to the participant.

Curriculum: Students participate in a two-week training program focused on Biostatistics, Safety Epidemiology, Occupational Health and Healthy Policy.

Cost: All expenses are paid by the program.

Project GRAD Atlanta

Dates: June 5 - June 30, 2006

Overview: GRAD Atlanta is a research-based school/community collab- orative project designed to achieve whole school reform. The goal of GRAD’s Summer Institute is to improve the overall quality of student academic performance, increase the number of high school graduates and increase college attendance among those graduates. To achieve this goal, the Summer Institute will prepare students in GRAD high schools for the upcoming school year through academic curriculum, SAT preparatory courses and success skills training.

Sponsor: Project GRAD Atlanta and the Atlanta Public School System.

Eligibility: Students in GRAD high schools who maintain a 2.5 GPA, are taking college preparatory courses and are college-bound are required to attend two summer institutes. Graduates will receive up to four years of scholarship support.

Housing: Project GRAD Summer Institute is a commuter program.

Curriculum: Algebra, Geometry, Language Arts, Chemistry, Biology, Social Studies, SAT Preparation and Success Skills.

Cost: Free

Intensive Spanish

Dates: June 2 - June 27, 2006

Overview: This one-month total immersions Spanish Language Program satisfiestherequirementforoneyearofforeignlanguageat the intermediate level. The program is limited to 18 AUC students. Students will be housed at Morehouse College, and all activities, both inside and outside the classroom, for the period of the program will be conducted in Spanish.

Sponsor: Mellon grant

Eligibility: AUC students whose application, letters of recommendation, past grades and interview indicate a high level of past achieve- mentinfirst-yearSpanishandthecommitmentnecessaryfor success in a total immersion program.

Housing: All participants are required to live on campus and have all meals with the program. Spanish-speaking teaching assistants will be assigned to residence halls of participants to maintain the total-immersion environment.

Curriculum: In addition to the Spanish 201 and Spanish 202 curriculum, outsidespeakers,SpanishlanguagefilmsandlocalSpanish language cultural activities will be included.

Cost: There is no cost to participate in this program.

Project Identity Summer Institute

Overview: Intensive pre-college program for early high school males with focus on Leadership, Math & Science, Language and African American male development.

Eligibility: Rising 10th and 11th graders

Housing: Four weeks on campus

Curriculum: Leadership Development, Cell & Behavior Research, SAT Prep, Spanish, College tours
