Morehouse College Summer Academy provides an enriching blend of academic opportunityand social engagement to middle school, high school, and college students to advance theirstudies and interest on subject areas in the sciences, arts, and technology fields. Each programsis independently run and sponsored

This living-learning experience offers to incoming juniors and seniors in high school theopportunity to experience life on campus, attend intellectually rigorous, “college-style” classes,and gain skills and confidence as they prepare for college . Each program offers a wide range ofsubjects that will engage and expand student interests as well as deepen their knowledge andunderstanding of college life.

Aside from the academic aspects of each program offered, there are a multitude ofextra-curricular activities to learn more about the Atlanta area and the history of Morehouse.In addition to the daily “mini-Core” classes, students also participate in workshop sessions ontopics such as SAT preparation, financial aid options, leadership and career choices.

FUN WEIRD SCIENCE – SUMMER OF INNOVATION

Dates: June 12, 2017 – June 30, 2017

Overview: Fun Weird Science is the programming brand for Georgia Science & RoboticsAcademy, Inc. (501c3). Our mission is to train K-12th grade students to be proficient ineach component of S.T.E.A.M. through innovative instruction that will producecreative-minded and critical thinking participants in the global marketplace. Join usthis summer as we seek to inspire rising 3rd – 7th grade students.

Eligibility: 3rd – 7th grade students.

Innovation (June 26, 2017 - June 30, 2017) Students will engage in a one week fullimmersion of creating and making things that solve problems; promotes new thinkingand simply puts a smile of the face of the creator.

Overview: Morehouse College iSTEM is an academic program designed for grades 6-8 toincrease their exposure to innovation and creativity in the STEM disciplines. iSTEMaddresses the need to increase underrepresented minority students in the STEMworkforce by inspiring, encouraging, supporting, and creating student interest inSTEM at the secondary level. They are now rising 8th-10th graders

iSTEM

The STEM EnRICH Summer Academy

Dates: June 5, 2017 – July 7, 2017

Overview: The STEM EnRICH Summer Academy is designed for middle school students and highschool students who are seeking to strengthen and expand their scientificknowledge. A variety of science and engineering concepts will be introduced throughhands-on activities included in the rigorous STEM curriculum. The experientiallearning activities that occur during a nontraditional school setting afford studentsthe opportunity to have fun while they learn. Field trips to local STEM relatedmuseums and companies complement and reinforce the STEM curriculum.

Eligibility: Middle School and High School Males and Females(Rising 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, and 11th Graders)

Curriculum: The modules of the STEM curriculum include Apps design, robotics, graphic art design, filmmaking, computer science, financial literacy and entrepreneurship, and chess.

THOMAS J. BLOCKER PRE-HEALTH SUMMER SCIENCE PROGRAM

Dates: June 3, 2017 - July 15, 2017

Overview: The Office of Health Professions at Morehouse College will conduct a rigorous six-weekhealth careers summer program for pre-freshman who have been accepted and plan toattend Morehouse College in the fall of 2017. The major objectives of the program are toimprove critical thinking, writing, math, test taking and problem solving skills. In additionstudents will be exposed to concepts in biology and seminars covering health related topics.

Sponsors: The Morehouse College Thomas J. Blocker Society and Health Professions Alumni

Eligibility: High school male seniors who have been accepted and plan to enroll at Morehouse Collegein the fall of 2017. These students should have test scores of at least 1000/1600 on the oldSAT or 1500/2400 on the new SAT, or a 22 overall ACT score. In addition, applicants shouldhave a minimum GPA of 3.0, and express an interest in a health career.

Housing: All participants are required to live on campus.

Curriculum:

Students will be registered in five courses that meet Monday through Thursday. The coursechoices are Mathematics (College Algebra, Pre-Calculus, Calculus I), English Composition101, Fundamentals in Critical Thinking, Advanced Critical Thinking and Analysis, GeneralBiology and Leadership for the 21st Century. There will also be seminars on adjusting tocollege life and the contributions of African and African-Americans to medicine and science.Students may receive Morehouse College credit in English 101, Advanced Critical Thinkingand Analysis, and mathematics if they earn grades of “B” or better in these subject areas.

Cost: There is no cost to students.

COCA-COLA PRE-COLLEGE LEADERSHIP PROGRAM

Dates: June 10, 2017 - Friday, June 16, 2017

Overview: Since 1997, the Coca-Cola Pre-College Leadership Program at the Andrew Young Centerfor Global Leadership (formally known as the Leadership Center) at Morehouse College,the first of its kind at a historically black college and university (HCBU), has been a beaconin providing leadership training to high school students and college pre-freshmen. Forseven days each summer, students from high schools across the United States areintroduced to the traits, skills and behaviors necessary for effective 21st centuryleadership.

Eligibility: • Male students completing their sophomore or junior year of high school by June 2017 • Male students completing their senior year in high school who have applied for

Curriculum: The curriculum is focused on personal and interpersonal leadership skills emphasizing thedevelopment of character, calling, connection and contribution. Training sessions arehighly interactive and diverse, including lectures, workshops, rituals, journaling andoutdoor leadership focused activities. During the week-long experience, each dayaccentuates a leadership principle (character, calling, connection and contribution). Theactivities emphasize self-awareness as a basis for better understanding of ethicalleadership practices in the 21st century. For many, the experience is life altering.

PROCTER & GAMBLE LEADERSHIP ACADEMY

Overview: The Procter & Gamble Leadership Academy is designed to provide incomingMorehouse College freshmen with an engaging interactive learning environment.This program provides an opportunity through which participants can understandthe theoretical and practical principles of leadership and professionalism and howthe principles are applied in one’s life.

Overview: The Summer Math and Science Honors Academy (SMASH) is a free of cost, STEM-intensivecollege preparatory program for underrepresented high school students of color. SMASH boastsa rigorous 5-week, 3-year summer, fully residential STEM enrichment program which providesaccess to STEM coursework and access to mentors, role models, and support networks ofstudents of color. Each summer, SMASH scholars spend five weeks on a college campus immersedin STEM and live among other high-potential, underrepresented (African American, Latino/a,Native American, Southeast Asian or Pacific Islander, low-income, first-in-family to attend college)high school students. In addition to their summer courses, SMASH scholars remain engagedduring the school year through monthly STEM workshops and academic programming. Thisincludes SAT prep, college counseling, financial aid workshops, and other activities to ensurecontinued academic success.

The program not only reinforces the students’ STEM academic identities, but also focuses ondeveloping their critical thinking, civic awareness, leadership and sense of social responsibility.

THE SUMMER MATH AND SCIENCE HONORS ACADEMY (SMASH)

NUCLEAR, MATERIALS, SPACE SCIENCES (NUMASS) SUMMER PROGRAM

Dates: May 31, 2017 - July 1, 2017 (6 Weeks)

Overview: The Morehouse NuMaSS Summer Program is a powerful four-week experience forrising 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th graders who have a desire and/or aptitude to pursue anundergraduate degree in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM).Rising 11th and 12th graders must be returning students only. Rising 11th graders musthave competed two years of the NuMaSS Program. Rising 12th graders must havecompleted two years of the NuMaSS Program. This science program caters to highschool students who desire an opportunity to engage in college courses and collegelaboratories, thus strengthening and reinforcing their fundamental science andmathematics skills. This program also gives students a greater understanding offundamental skills necessary to successfully transition from high school to college.Although open to all students from any geographical area, each participant must beliving in the Atlanta Metropolitan area for the duration of the program.

THE PRE-FRESHMAN SUMMER ENRICHMENT PROGRAM (PSEP)

Dates: June 10, 2017 – June 21, 2017

Overview: The Pre-Freshman Summer Enrichment Program (PSEP) is a dynamic six-week academicenhancement and college readiness program that offers pre-freshmen a challengingand rewarding experience on the historic campus of Morehouse College. This summerprogram is designed to strengthen participants’ academic skills, study habits and timemanagement skills to prepare them for the challenging academic environment they willencounter during their matriculation at Morehouse.

PSEP will offer a limited number of students, NOT recommended to the program, an advance opportunity to prepare for the rigors of Morehouse by challenging and supporting them as they navigate the transition from high school to college.Participating in PSEP also allows students to become familiar with the campus and Atlanta community prior to their fall semester. Therefore, they get a head start on familiarizing themselves with their new home away from home before their peers.

Curriculum: Each student will be placed in two of the following course offerings: Basic Math,College Algebra, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, English Composition. Based on his academicperformance in the courses, the student is eligible for 6 (six) college credits if he earns afinal grade of C or higher. These credits will be applied towards the hours needed toobtain a degree from Morehouse College.

GREATER ORLANDO UPWARD BOUND MATH-SCIENCE PROGRAM

Dates: June 4, 2017 – June 30, 2017

Overview: The Greater Orlando Upward Bound Math and Science Program (GOUBMS) isdesigned to strengthen the math and science skills of participating students. The goalof the program is to help students recognize and develop their potential to excel inmath and science and to encourage them to pursue postsecondary degrees in mathand science, and ultimately careers in the math and science profession.

Eligibility: High School (9th – 12th grade)

Housing: Residential program

Curriculum: The program provides summer programs with intensive math and science training;year-round counseling and advisement; exposure to university faculty members whodo research in mathematics and the sciences; computer training; and participant-conducted scientific research under the guidance of faculty members or graduatestudents, who are serving as mentors; education or counseling services designed toimprove the financial and economic literacy of students; and programs and activitiespreviously mentioned that are specially designed for students who are limited Englishproficient, students from groups that are traditionally underrepresented inpostsecondary education, students with disabilities, students who are homelesschildren and youths, students who are in foster care or are aging out of foster caresystem or other disconnected students.

Overview: Online Bridge Program:This online program provides proven learning strategies that help students: transition from high school to the rigors of college; understand what skill sets are needed to be successful in college; and ultimately increase students’ college GPAs. Residential Summer Residential Summer Program:The pre-freshman Residential Summer Program is an engaging, hands-on two week program for pre-freshman STEM majors who: complete the four-week Online Bridge Program; earned required earmarked Residential Rewards Points; and are selected by our faculty panel.

Sponsors: Department of Education, Minority Science and Engineering Improvement Program (MSEIP)

Eligibility: All high school seniors who have been accepted and plan to enroll at Morehouse College in the fall of 2017. Upon registration, students must declare a major in one of the sciences, which includes biology, chemistry, physics, computer science, dual degree engineering, mathematics or psychology and be interested in pursuing a career in science.

Housing: Residential

Curriculum: Components of the Online Bridge Program consist of: • Online Scientific Literacy course completed at home (www.scientificliteracycenter.org). • Weekly webinars facilitated by faculty, staff and Morehouse College administrators

Components of this Residential Program consist of: • Conducting a research/design project in Morehouse College Makerspace Exploration Center • Personalized mentorships by Morehouse faculty • Opportunities to present at conferences and/or competitions.

PROJECT IMHOTEP

Dates: May 22, 2017 – August 4, 2017

Overview: Project: IMHOTEP is an eleven-week internship designed to increasethe knowledge and skills of student trainees in biostatistics, epidemiology, andoccupational safety and health. The program begins with two weeks of intenseeducational training. The purpose of this training is to equip interns with theacademic coursework and information necessary to complete the program. Duringthe following eight weeks, interns conduct public health research with experts at theCDC, NIMR, Academic Institutions, State Agencies, and various other public healthagencies and community based organizations. Interns also receive a $3,500 stipend,lodging, and travel to and from their site location and city of origin.

Eligibility: • Current junior, senior, or recent graduate (within one year) of an undergraduate institution.

• Cumulative GPA of 2.7 or higher.• U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident.

Housing: Residential

Curriculum: The program begins with two weeks of didactic public health coursework, followedby nine weeks of practical hands-on experience, an oral presentation, posterpresentation, and submission of a written manuscript suitable for publication in ascientific journal. Interns participate in a wide variety of seminars, workshops, andeducational initiatives throughout the summer and are also required to complete 16hours of community service. Interns receive research support and consultation indata analysis and other project requirements.

Cost: Interns will receive a $3,500 stipend, lodging, and travel to and fromtheir site location and city of origin.

PUBLIC HEALTH LEADER FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

Dates: May 22, 2017 – August 4, 2017

Overview: Morehouse College Public Health Leader Fellowship Program is a ten week internshipdesigned to better prepare highly qualified underrepresented minority students for entryinto graduate programs at schools of public health, allied, and biomedical sciences forcareers to serve populations disproportionately affected by HIV, viral hepatitis, STD andTB. The program begins with 2 weeks of intense educational training, followed by8 weeks of practical hands-on experience, an oral presentation, poster presentation, andsubmission of a written manuscript suitable for publication in a scientific journal.

TADA SUMMER ENRICHMENT EXPERIENCETalent Assessment and Development Academy

Dates: May 15, 2017 - May 19, 2017

Overview: TADA is a 4-year learning academy open to all majors currently enrolled atMorehouse College. TADA is designed to be completed in a cohort format enablingparticipants with similar interests and strengths to develop hard and soft skills andcollaboratively explore potential careers in their discipline. In addition toworkshops and seminars throughout the year, TADA will host intensive bootcamps facilitated by faculty, executives, and alumni in January and May to prepareparticipants for impending internships and other experiential learning experiences.Moreover, the Academy will work with alumni and representatives from variousfields to sponsor and facilitate group and individual industry explorationexperiences in select cities.

RONALD E. MCNAIR POST-BACCALAUREATE ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM

Overview: The Morehouse College Ronald E. McNair Post Baccalaureate Achievement Program is ayear round graduate school preparatory internship with an eight-week summer researchcomponent. The program is designed to prepare first generation undergraduatesdemonstrating strong academic potential for doctoral studies, through involvement inresearch and other scholarly activities. The program provides faculty mentored researchopportunities in the STEM and Psychology fields, opportunities to publish and/or presentresearch findings, and assistance with the graduate school application process. Primarily,the goal of the program is to increase the attainment of Ph.D. degrees by students fromunderrepresented segments of society. The Morehouse College McNair Programencourages participants to enroll in graduate programs and tracks their progress throughto the successful completion of advanced degrees.

Curriculum: The program provides summer programs with intensive math and science training;year-round counseling and advisement; exposure to university faculty members who doresearch in mathematics and the sciences; computer training; and participant-conductedscientific research under the guidance of faculty members or graduate students, who areserving as mentors; education or counseling services designed to improve the financial andeconomic literacy of students; and programs and activities previously mentioned that arespecially designed for students who are limited English proficient, students from groups thatare traditionally underrepresented in postsecondary education, students with disabilities,students who are homeless children and youths, students who are in foster care or are agingout of foster care system or other disconnected students.

Overview: The D.R.E.A.M.S. to Teach Initiative main goal is to recruit African American men.The DR K-12 Pre-Service STEM Teacher Initiative is designed to integrate Science,Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education with a teacherpreparation program in order to develop well-equipped students in teacher preparationand secondary STEM teaching careers prior to entering college. The initiative is crucial toincreasing the number of highly trained, underrepresented African American males inK-12 STEM teaching careers as nearly half of our U.S. schools have no minority teachers(Johnson 2010; Villegas et al 2010). Their expertise in STEM education along with theposition as role models will greatly impact academic performance, which then translatesto high quality professionals.

THE DR K-12 PRE-SERVICE STEM TEACHER INITIATIVE

The mission of Morehouse College is to develop men with disciplined minds who will lead lives of leadership andservice. A private historically black liberal arts college for men, Morehouse realizes this mission by emphasizing theintellectual and character development of its students. In addition, the College assumes special responsibility forteaching the history and culture of black people.

Founded in 1867 and located in Atlanta, Georgia, Morehouse is an academic community dedicated to teaching,scholarship, and service, and the continuing search for truth as a liberating force. As such, the College offersinstructional programs in three divisions - business and economics, humanities and social sciences, as well asscience and mathematics – including extracurricular activities that: develop skills in oral and writtencommunications, analytical and critical thinking, and interpersonal relationships; foster an understanding andappreciation of world cultures, artistic and creative expression, and the nature of the physical universe.

MISSION

In 1867, two years after the Civil War ended, Augusta Theological Institute was established in the basement ofSpringfield Baptist Church in Augusta, Georgia. Founded in 1787, Springfield Baptist is the oldest independentAfrican American church in the United States. The school’s primary purpose was to prepare black men for ministryand teaching. Today, Augusta Theological Institute is Morehouse College, which is located on a 66-acre campus inAtlanta and enjoys an international reputation for producing leaders who have influenced national and worldhistory.

HISTORY

The year 2017 will be a special one as Morehouse College will celebrate a 150-year history of educating anddeveloping global leaders. In that century and a half, “Dear Old Morehouse” College has produced thousands ofmen who have contributed to world society in every way imaginable. The Morehouse legacy is a global story aboutmen who for 150 years have charted and changed the course of history.
