From The Vicar:

“Be careful not to do your “acts of righteousness” before men, to be seen by them…..” - Matthew 6:1

And so Fat Tuesday has come and gone. We consumed boat loads of pancakes, bacon and sausage as we prepared for a season of fasting before us. Afterwards, held a Brief Order of Confession, burned our palm branches to make our ashes for Ash Wednesday. Then Ash Wednesday service with Corporate Confession, Absolution And Forgiveness, and Imposition of Ashes on our foreheads.

The scripture quotation opening this article is from the Sermon on the Mount where Jesus commends almsgiving, prayer and fasting and emphasizes that spiritual devotion must not be done for show.

You will also note that the bolded words above highlight ac-tions we have taken to acknowledge our humility for the journey Christ is about to intentionally undertake to bear the fruits of justice, saving grace, mercy and forgiveness for us all.

Unlike the Pharisees, who stand on street corners and how “how” they pray, or “how” they distort their faces to seem as if they suffer as they are fasting, and “how” they give a pittance to show how they aid with alms to the poor, we come humbly before God with reverence as the very items that were placed at the feet of the one who rode victoriously up to the gates of Je-rusalem to the shouts of “Blessed is He that comes in the name of the Lord,” as we burn the palms for the ashes, we will have imposed upon our heads, we do these things as a remem-brance of what was so freely given for us.

These are not “acts of righteousness” before men, but they are sincere acts before Almighty God in gratitude for His saving grace found in the life, death and resurrection of the one who has made life everlasting for us possible.

Forty days’ journey, through trials and temptations, and all the time what His outcome would be……this, for us all, is truly an act of righteousness for all.

Look at us.

We are so small.

A Message from the Council President

I can’t believe I’m writing a letter for the MARCH newsletter al-ready! Time is flying.

The Property Committee came to our February Council meeting to update us about their projects. They installed new LED light-bulbs in the sanctuary—a bright idea, indeed! The church looks more inviting, and we should see a significant decrease in our electric bill. We will go from a combined wattage of over 5600w to below 900w for the bulbs they changed. Other projects they are working on include repairs and improvements to storage rooms and classrooms, ceiling tiles, painting, parking lot lighting, security issues, and the future stonework renovations. We will use be-queathed donations to fund some projects. However, it won’t cov-er the entire cost of the needed stonework repairs. We will need to raise money through fundraising and a capital campaign for that.

Talking about money and stewardship seems to be a taboo topic in some churches. Do you feel that way? I hope not. Mt. Zion is a church family, not just a church building. April shares our financial information in the weekly bulletins for each Sunday so that as a church family, WE know OUR financial health. If you notice, she includes a note that we need to receive approximately $3200 per week to cover our expenses. In January, our highest collection for regular offering was $2,493.00, and there have only been two weeks so far this year when we received over $2000 for regular offertory. Please consider your commitment to our financial health and use the e-giving option or mail your weekly contributions if necessary. Each of you makes a critical contribution to this church. That includes your monetary giving as well giving your time and talent.

Time and talent surveys were handed out recently. If you still need one, let us know. Please think about how YOU can contribute to the work of this church family. You could volunteer in so many ways with so many aspects of the church. I hope you will consider your monetary, time, and talent stewardship this month and join me in making OUR church the best that it can be for the Glory of God and the enjoyment of coming together as a family. Exciting things are happening! Join in!

When You’re in the Hospital: We do our very best to be in contact with you and your family by phone or visitation when you are hospitalized but it is sometimes challenging. Please let the hospitals know you are a member of Mt. Zion Lutheran, Kutztown, even if they don’t ask. If you don’t let them know at time of admittance, it’s okay to inform them later. If the office hasn’t been con-

tacted by you or a family member, it’s the only way we will know you’ve been hospitalized.

Upcoming Lenten Activities

Building Personal Care Kits For LWR During Lent

Once again, during the Sundays of Lent I ask that you participate in gathering items for Personal Care Kits as we did last year. A small sacrifice that is meaningful to those in need in our country as well as other nations. Here are the items needed:

March 1: ONE light-weight bath towel; sized between 20”x40” and 52”x27”, dark color

March 8: TWO or three bath-size bars of soap (8 to 9 oz.), any brand in original wrapping

March 15: ONE adult size toothbrush in original package

March 22: ONE sturdy comb, remove packaging

March 29: ONE metal nail clipper (attached file optional), remove packaging

New items only; no religious symbols, messages or congregation names; no patriotic or military symbols; all items should be new and in good condition.

Place all items in receptacles available in the Conference Room.

Stoned Worship During Lent

Upon entering the building each Sunday Worship beginning Sun-day, March 1, please pick up a stone in the buckets provided at main entry points. This stone represents your “Sin” for the week past. Save your “Sins” week after week and then return them all on Palm Sunday. They will be placed in forms that will be used to make a sculpture with your “Sins.” These will be revealed then on Easter Sunday at the Main entrance to the sanctuary.

Pinned To The Cross

During the Season of Lent, you are encouraged to jot down any prayer concerns you may have on the post-a-note pads in the basket at the cross in the front of the sanctuary. In turn, pin them to the cross with the push pins provided.

Redner Tapes

Thank you to all who collected and turned in Redner 1% Sales Tapes. Our total for the year was $15,841.66. If all tapes are accepted, we will have earned a total of $158.42. In 2018, we had $14,926.82. We increased our tape collection over $1000.00 in one year. Can we hit $20,000 in 2020?

Note: Please do not put Walmart or CVS Tapes in the collection jar. They are NOT part of this program. In addition, try and turn your tapes in at least once a month. We had some tapes submit-ted from May 2018. These are certainly very old and may not be accepted. We also had about a dozen receipts from Redners that were submitted that were not part of the 1% sales program and could not be used. Social Ministry Committee Update!

With the congregation’s help, we completed a number of commit-

tee projects in 2019:

- stuffed H.U.G.S. bags and made them available for any-

one in need of a “hug”.

- provided 1654.75 pounds of fresh produce for area food

banks.

- organized and held the annual God’s Work - Our Hands

ELCA Service Day with activities for all ages.

- held a collection for Keystone Military Families of items

sent to our troops in Christmas stockings.

- completed 30 handmade mission quilts that were deliv-

ered to Safe Berks, Reading.

- provided 15 Christmas meal boxes for clients of Friend,

Inc.’s food pantry.

- provided 15 Christmas gifts for children of Friend’s pan-

try clients.

- planned a meal for KU students in the PROFS program.

We then prepared and delivered the meal on January 7, 2020,

when the dining halls were closed and the students were in need.

We also took 10 bags of groceries for the students to use in their

rooms. This was possible due to a Thrivent Action Team Grant.

Thank you to all who supported the projects! Watch for new

ways coming this year how you can help us to help others.

With the arrival of Spring it is time to begin plans for this year’s Community Garden. The Garden Team will hold its first meeting for the year on Monday, March 9, at 7 PM, in the upstairs Conference Room. We’d love for you to join us!

We spent the morning working to cleanup the basement by sorting through storage containers and removing trash and unwanted items. Storage shelves were emptied and moved to new loca-tions.

While much was accomplished, this is a work in progress, there is more work to be done. Help will be needed to paint walls and ceil-ing tiles. In addition, there are more stored items that need to be sorted through.

Watch for notice of scheduled dates and times for future church work days. YOUR HELP IS NEEDED!

This is OUR church and we ALL need to work together on this major cleaning and spruce up project.

While Jesus stands at the center of Christianity, it is not widely known how much he is respected, even revered, by numerous other faith traditions. We’ll explore what this means in an increasingly multifaith culture, and what insights we might gain from see-ing Jesus through “fresh eyes,” with a particular focus on some selections from Thich Nhat Hanh’s Coming Home: Jesus and the Buddha as Brothers and Mustafa Akyol’s The Islamic Jesus: How the King of the Jews Became a Prophet of the Mus-

lims.

The Rev. Dr. Stephen Simmons is a retired member of the Moravian Theological Seminary faculty, having directed the continuing education program and taught theol-ogy, ethics, and community ministry there from 2001 until 2017. An ordained pastor in the Presbyterian Church USA, he has served congregations in Oregon, Illinois, and Pennsylvania, including, most recently, the First Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia. He holds a Master of Divinity degree from San Francisco Theological Seminary, and an AB and PhD from the University of Chicago. He and his wife, the Rev. Cynthia Simmons, are blessed to have two sons, daughters-in-law, and two grandchildren

nearby in Allentown and Philadelphia.

FARM Family Appreciation Event

The 20th Annual FARM Family Appreciation Celebration is sched-uled for March 21, 2020, at the Hamburg Field House. Doors will

open at 6:15 pm with catered hot buffet dinner served from 7 – 8:00 pm. Musical entertainment will be pro-vided by “The Outlaws” from 8 – 11:00 pm. There is no charge for farm families, but they can give a free will

donation at the door. The cost for Farm family supporters: Adults $18.00; Children (ages 3-10) $10; Children (2 and under) no charge. Call the church office for a registration form, or you can pick up one at worship on Sunday mornings. Deadline is March 6.

Spread the word and come out to support our farm families who do so much to ensure that we have healthy and plentiful food choices to eat. The 2020 theme is “trucks”. Support your favorite brand of truck!

Wednesday Lenten Services

The Wednesday Lenten Services begin with our soup supper at 6:00 PM in the church social hall. Following the soup supper we have a service as well. We are looking for volunteers to prepare the soups for each Wednesday evening service. In addition to soup, we plan to have breads and salads, they can be of any type (green, fruit, pasta, potato, etc.).

Sign-up sheets are available on the table in the conference room.

The Worship and Music Committee encourages everyone to partici-pate in these services. We hope to see you there.

Your generosity helps us contin-ue our mission of serving survivors of domestic violence and sexual as-sault. We offer these free and confidential services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Your donation of 30 handmade quilts empowers us to con-tinue this crucial work. Last year, Safe Berks served more than 4,000 local people who were impacted by domestic violence or sexual assault. Approximated 800 people - including 400 children stayed in our Safe House in the past year. We are so grateful for your support. Together, we can build a Safe Berks! Thank you! We also loved hearing about your involvement in the community; you truly stood as an example of philanthropy and service for our students. The groceries were also particularly helpful! We were able to restock our emergency supplies in the office that all students were able to use, and it was a wonderful treat for our students who attended the lunch. We are seeking someone to take over as chair of our annual Summer Fest event. Current chair, Andrew Dietrich, is will-ing to co-chair this year to help with training. He has all the information you need and will pass it on to you.

This is our largest outreach event of the year and we always have many people come out to help, but leadership is needed to coordinate the various fest areas and activities.

A poem for each month catches the mood of the changing seasons

The sun is nervous as a kite

That can’t quite keep its own string tight.

Some days are fair, and some are raw.

The timid earth decides to thaw.

Shy budlets peep from twigs on trees,

And robins join the chickadees.

Pale crocuses poke through the ground

Like noses come to sniff around.

Cancellation Notification

Winter and colder temperatures always brings the possibility that on a given Sunday morning we might need to cancel Sunday school and/or worship. In case of icy or snowy conditions, you should turn to:

In addition, we will use our email notification system for those who have signed on to receive emails from Mt. Zion. We will do our best to make any decision regarding changes to Mt. Zion’s Sun-day schedule in a timely fashion.
