Head Coach

In his sixth year, Coach Dan Fishel is excited to continue building the cross country program at MCC that was re-started in 2010 by former Coach Mike Smith. Coach Fishel has many ties to the area. He grew up in Sullivan Township and attended Ravenna Public Schools for many years before graduating from Whitehall High School in 1996. At Whitehall, he was a member of a Conference Championship cross countryteamandaClassBStateChampionshiptrack&fieldteam.

After high school, Coach Fishel attended Muskegon Community College, earning his Associate’s Degree in 1998. HefeltgoingtoMCCwasagreateducationalandfinancialchoice that prepared him well to continue his education at Grand Valley State University. Coach Fishel ran cross country andtrack&fieldforGVSUduringhis3yearsthereuntilhisgraduation in 2001. He was part of a GLIAC Championship track&fieldteamatGVSU.Asavarsitycrosscountryrunner,he was named “GV Sports Athlete of the Week” in 1999 and was an Academic All-American in 2000. He also later earned his Master’s degree at GVSU in 2011.

Coach Fishel has plenty of experience building a program. In 2002, Coach Fishel took over the struggling Muskegon High School Boys and Girls Cross Country Teams. In ten years coaching cross country at Muskegon High, he increased cross

countryparticipationover300percentandfieldedteamsthatcompetedwithanddefeatedmanyMuskegonCountypowerhouseprograms.In2010,theboysteamwon2teamtrophies,theirfirstsince1979.In2011,thegirlsteamwontheirfirstcrosscountryteamtrophyinschoolhistory!Fortheseaccomplishments,CoachFishelwas named the Muskegon Chronicle Divisions 1+2 Girls Cross Country Coach of the Year in 2011. He also coachedoncity,conference,andregionalchampionshiptrack&fieldteamswhilecoachingmanyschoolrecord-holders at Muskegon High School.

DuringCoachFishel’stenure,themen’scrosscountryteamhasqualifiedforthenationalchampionshipall5yearsincludingthe2013Jayhawkmen’steamthatfinishedaprogram-best14thplaceattheNJCAADivisionInational meet in Fort Dodge, Iowa (since the program re-started in 2010). The women’s cross country team has qualifiedforthenationalchampionship4outof5yearsincludingthe2014theJayhawkwomen’scrosscountryteamthatfinishedaprogram-best14thplaceattheNJCAADivisionInationalmeetinLubbock,Texas.

Coach Fishel teaches at Muskegon High School. He lives in Norton Shores with his wife, Jennifer, his 3 daughters, and his son. Carly is 8 years old, Maggie is 7 years old, and twins Rex and Penny will turn 4 in November.

Assistant Coach

Inherfirstyear,AssistantCoachAshley Harney (Hamilton) is excited to join the Jayhawkcrosscountrycoachingstaff!

Ashley is a graduate from Charlotte High class of 2010. After high school, she ran for Lansing Community College for two years then transferred to Ferris State University. While at LansingCommunityCollegesheaccomplishedalot!Shesetfour school records in the 1500 meters, 800 meters, 4x800 meters, and 4x400 meters and was 4 time All-American. Her 1500 meter PR was 4:39, her 800 meter PR was 2:13.8, and her 5k PR was in the 18’s. Ashley also helped LCC earn a top 3finishatthecrosscountrynationalchampionship!Thenshetransferred to Ferris State University where she ran. While at Ferris she was honorable mention in the distance medley relay which just missed nationals. During that time, she completed herfieldexperiencewithBigRapidsHighSchoolCrossCountry team in the summer of 2013. She graduated with a Recreation Leadership and Management/Sports Management degree from Ferris State University.

In 2015 Ashley took an internship with the Olivet Colleges crosscountryandtrackandfieldteams.WhilethereshetookherLeveloneUSATFcoachingclassandisnowacertifiedcoach. After the internship, she took a job at Charlotte High School as the head coach in cross country, head mid-distance/distancecoachandassistantgirlstrackandfieldcoachforoneseasonin2016.

Coach Ashley Harney (Hamilton) recently married her husband Tyler Harney, and the couple moved to the West Michigan area.
