David BrownScupltorDavid Brown was born in Johannesburg in 1951 and studied Design and Photography at the Mi-chaelis School of Fine Art, University of Cape Town, obtaining his degree in 1974. He was intro-duced to sculpture in 1975 by the prominent South African artist, and founding member of the Amadlozi Group.

Deadly Sinners is a new series of eleven bronze sculptures triggered by Anne Applebaum’s Pulitzer Prize winning book Gulag: A History (2003), which explores the history of the labour camps in Si-beria where millions of people were forcefully shipped during World War II. Imagining the terrify-ing train journeys to the frozen wastelands, Brown wondered what the train drivers were thinking, and so the first Sinner, The Engine Driverwas born. The other ten “followed easily”.For further reading refer to David Brown: Deadly Sinners by Alexandra DoddThe exhibition will run until 28 November 2015. For more information or a portfolio of the Deadly Sinnersplease contact the gallery in Cape Town.

Leonce Raphael AgbodjélouPhotographerAgbodjélou was born in 1965 in Porto-Novo, Benin, where he still lives and works. He is the founder and director of the first photographic school in Benin which opened in 2013, and has recently been appointed the president of the Photographer’s Association of Porto-Novo. He presented his first solo exhibition From Dahomey to Benin in 2010 in London. The Egungun Project was presented in Germany in 2013, followed by his latest solo exhibition Code Noir in 2014 in London.

Egungun Masquerades is the Benin-based photographer Agbodjélou’s first solo exhibition in South Africa. This is his most recent series depicting incarnations of the Yoruba tribe’s ancestral forebears, who appear at funerals and annual festivals in ritualised parades, magical feats and colourful pag-eantry. In these photographs, Agbodjélou explores the complex role of the Egungun, capturing both their individual personalities and mannerisms, while emphasising their unequivocal presence as enigmatic spiritual manifestations. The exhibition will run until 13 October 2015.
