ABOUT NANT:

Nepalese Association of Northern Territory Inc (NANT) was an outcome of an intense discussion and desire to serve the Nepalese community in a formal and well-organized ap-proach through an organization. Its founders felt the need of a Nepalese Community organization that would cater to the needs of new Nepalese immigrants, students and also those who were already residing in the Northern Territory, Australia.That very essentiality became the cause of its birth and was thus registered as organization in the year 2008 and was incorporat-ed under the Association Act on 11 March 2010. Thanks to all the founder members, volunteers, advisers and well-wishers that felt this need during those tough times and has brought for-ward NANT as one of the emerging communities in the North-ern Territory. The objects and purposes of the Association are to:

• Promote goodwill and co-operation amongst Nepalese people residing in Australia, in general and in the Northern Territory, in particular;

• Provide help and support to Nepalese people at times of need. • Extend help and facilities to Nepalese students who come to

study in Australia;• Maintain and promote Nepalese culture and tradition in Aus-

tralia• Promote friendship within Australian communities at large

and exchange cultural practices and values;• Develop and foster social, economic and cultural relationships

between Australia and Nepal• Create a forum to discuss contemporary social issues facing

the Nepalese community living either in Australia or in Ne-pal; and

• Undertake any activities as determined by the association from time to time to maintain Nepalese culture, tradition and friendships with broader Australian Communities.

It is hard to believe that we are already in June 2018, don’t know how quick time fled. Our 2016/18 tenure is coming to the end, so I find myself wondering where 2 years, 2016/17 and 2017/18 have gone. These two years were so tremen-dous and learning phase for me personally and would like to thank you everyone for giving me this opportunity. Mr. Kishor Adhikari was appointed to fulfil the vacant Treasurer position. We are at the closure of another busy and challeng-ing year! It is a wonderful time to look back on another year of significant achievement. Therefore, we are hereby presenting our Second Year - 2 Half Yearly Newsletters, combined in one.

In this 2017/18, we delivered new events in NANT Calendar such as Mha Puja, Establish of DHFC Grass Root Soccer Project for Kids, Topi Diwas 2018 and Nepal Festival - (the event that all the Nepalese in Darwin were waiting for long) for the first time in Darwin, jointly with NRNA – NT SCC at Darwin Wa-terfront on Nepalese New Year 2075. NANT team 2016/18 were very grateful to celebrate NANT 10th Anniversary in our tenure. To make it remarkable, NANT have awarded “NANT Excellence Award 2018” to 2 Organisations and 4 persons, who have giv-en outstanding Contribution in Community. We are organising Territory Day Celebration on 30th June 2018 by organising “Ter-ritory Multicultural Cup 2018” at Bagot Oval including Wider community so, our team would like to invite you all to join us.

I wish to thank my remarkable team for their continued support. Thanks also goes to all the hard-working wonderful volunteers and the many individuals and community groups who support us in many ways. Special thanks to NT Government for the continuous support through grants and Sponsors for their continuous in-kind and financial support throughout the year.

Lastly, I am very thankful to all our community members for giv-ing me an opportunity to serve as a President 2016/18 for Nep-alese Association of Northern Territory Inc. Here are some of the things our NANT has accomplished so far this year 2017/18

NANT organised Sponsors & Volunteers Rec-ognition Program – 2017 on 1st July 2017 from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm at Jingili Water Garden. The main objective of the event was to appreciate and thank all the financial spon-sors and volunteers for their help and support to NANT in organising different programs and events throughout the year. As a symbol of ap-preciation of their support a ‘Token of Love’ and ‘recognition Certificate’ were presented to all volunteers and Sponsors of 2017. The event was witnessed by more than 100 community members.NANT created Sponsors and Volunteers Rec-ognition Program as an event on its Facebook page and provided information about the event date, time and activities to all NANT community members well in advance and in-vited them in order to ensure their participa-tion in the event

On the event date, Mr Sudeep Shrestha, Pres-ident of NANT, welcomed all participants and thanked all the sponsors and volunteers for their valuable support in the fiscal year of 2016/17. Mr Shrestha also requested all the community members to apply / renew NANT membership through NANT website for 2017/18 financial year and mentioned about the importance of number of financial members of NANT which is the benchmark to show its other stakeholders about our com-munity’s growth.

On the same occasion, Certificates and Trophies were awarded to win-ners / runner up of NANT Lawn Ten-nis Tournament 2016, NANT Cricket Tournament Running Shield 2016 and Zenith Memorial NANT Cup 2016 in-cluding all the performers and volun-teers for 2016/17.

As part of NANT’s annual sports event calendar, Nepalese Association of Northern Territory Inc. organized NANT Cricket Tournament Running Shield 2017 in July at Tiwi Cricket Oval, Tiwi. Four teams (Darwin Hearts Crick-et Club, Chitwan Tiger Cricket Club, Gorkha Warriors Cricket Club and KBA Global Cricket Club) of Nepali commu-nity in Darwin contested the tourna-ment.

Day 1: 15 July- First day of NANT Crick-et Tournament Running Shield 2017 concluded with two league matches. The first game was contested between Dar-win Hearts Cricket Club and Chitwan Tiger Cricket Club where Chitwan Ti-ger won by 5 wickets and the Man of the Match was awarded to Saramsha Thapa for his exceptional performance. Second game was played between KBA Global Cricket Club Vs Gorkha Warrior Crick-et Club where Gorkha Warrior won by 5 wickets and Man of the Match awarded to Manoj Bhatta.

Day 2: 16 July- Second day, first match was played between KBA Global Crick-et Club Vs Chitwan Tiger Cricket Club where KBA Global Cricket won by 56 Runs and Man of the Match was Arun Kandel. Second match was played be-tween Gorkha Warriors Cricket Club Vs Chitwan Tiger Cricket Club where Chitwan Tiger Cricket club won by 1 wicket and Man of the Match was Shek-har Aryal.

Day 3: 22 July- Third day, first match was played between KBA Global Cricket

Club, Darwin Vs Darwin Hearts Cricket Club where Darwin Hearts Club won by 6 wickets and Man of the Match was Ro-shan Chhetri. Second match was between Gorkha Warriors Cricket Club Vs Darwin Hearts Cricket Club where Gorkha Warriors Cricket club won by 19 Runs and Man of the Match was Neeroj Lama.

Day 4: 23 July, the Grand Finale was between Chitwan Tiger Cricket Club Vs Gorkha Warriors Cricket Club where Chitwan Tiger Cricket Club won the NANT Cricket Tournament Run-ning Shield for the year 2017.

NANT Team 2016/18 would like to express our sincere grat-itude to Cricket Tournament coordinator, Mr. Rishi Kesh Bhandari and also would like to acknowledge the valuable sup-port of University Bulls Cricket Club and Mr. Arun Kandel for organizing scoreboard and mats during the tournament.

FREE BBQ was provided for the spectators and players on final day. Medals and Trophies were presented to all the winners and runner ups. NANT would like to ac-knowledge all our sponsors and supporters for making this event a huge success.

Teej Program 2074 was organised on 4th August 2017 at Italian Club, Marrara. More than 450 Nepali residing in Darwin participated the event in order to celebrate one of the biggest Hindu Festival of women – witnessed a wider community participation and a huge success.

Chief Guest Ms Kate Worden MLA, and special guest The Lord Mayor City of Darwin MS Katrina Fong Lim and MCNT President Mr. Kevin Kardi-garmar were present on the event.

On the occasion, Nepalese Cultural dances were present by NANT Nepali Language & Cultural Class students and local talents where as guest artist Su-nita Dulal – a folk singer from Nepal who attracted everyone to dance on the floor and made the night memorable. On the occasion of Teej, NANT also organised Teej Puja (Panchami Pooja) on 24 August 2017 at Hindu Temple Malak which holds the special significance for the Hindu women’s. The event started with some Teej music and dance from all the community ladies dressed in red which was then followed by Teej Pooja by Priest Narayan Dahal. Free Prasad of pooja was distributed to all the participants. As a social cause to support the victims of flood back in Nepal, in collaboration with NRNA –NT, NANT organ-ised a relief fund donation program during the event and handed over the raised fund to NRNA-NT.

One of the most happening annual event of NANTis the NANT Lawn Tennis Tournament where manymembers compete for the glory to become the best tennis player within the community. All the knock-out rounds were played at nightcliff tennis court whereas the final match had been scheduled and booked at Gardens Tennis Court, Skycity Darwin on 15th Sep, 2017. Finalists; Dhruba Karki and Nagendra Bohora, both Tennis enthusiasts, had a really good back and forth rally in the final in the beginning but enjury in pre-vious matches of Dhruba Karki cost him the final match to Nagendra Bohora. Nagendra won the final 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 answering back to the defending cham-pion Dhruba from last year at the final. Mr Shyam Banjade was awarded “Emerging Player of the Year” on same evening.Presence of the supporters from the community was tremenduos which made it clear that Nepalis love sports a lot, specially when their favorites are playing. Families and friends celebrated together with the finalists and enjoyed the match.

NANT celebrated our biggest Hindu Festival “BADA DASHAIN on 24 September 2017 at Fillipino Community Center together with popular artists from Nepal - Alm-oda, Sandip Chhetri and Mala Subba in the presence of our Chief Guest Hon. Kate Worden MLA, Assistant Minister for Multicul-tural, Special Guest Federal Mem-ber of Solomon; Mr. Luke Gosling MP, Minister Lauren Moos MLA, The Lord Mayor-City of Darwin, Mr. Kon Vatskalis and other dis-tinguished guests

Before the formal inauguration, Nepali Priest Mr. Shree Niwas Katel (visting parent from Nepal) chanted Swastik Bachan to inau-gurate the event in Nepalese tra-ditional way.

NANT thank all our local per-formers specially our small kids from Casuarina and Palmerston language class, guest artists from Nepal, volunteers, sponsors and the community members who made this event delightful and en-joyable.

7A SIDE FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT

On 7th and 8th October 2017, in the memory of our beloved friend and a good community member, "Zenith Malla", Nepalese Association of Northern Territory or-ganised 7A-Side ZENITH MEMORAL NANT CUP 2017 football at Malak oval to make strong community and healthy society by means of sports. The event was coordi-nated by Ganesh Gurung. All together 5 teams participat-ed for the tournament which was played on league basis and top 2 teams to reach final. The list of the team that participated for the tournament were Stuart Park (SP), Gorkha Paltan (GP), DHFC Blue, DHFC Red, TBF. The final game was held on 8th October between DHFC RED Vs DHFC BLUE where DHFC BLUE came out as a winner for the 2017 Zenith Memorial NANT cup 2017. Medal and Trophy were handed to all winners. FREE BBQ were provided on the final day.

On 20th October, NANT or-ganized “Mha Puja” for the very first time in Darwin, where all together 117 people from dif-ferent cast participated (Pooja plus Bhoje 61 & Bhoje only 56). NANT Team 2016/18 would like to thank Mr. Sharad Bataju, Co-ordinator of “Mha Pooja 2074”, all the participants and helping hand volunteers for their time and huge effort to make this pro-gram huge success.

Mha Puja is one of the unique annual rituals performed by “Newar” people of Nepal on New Year’s Day of Nepal Sam-bat. Mha Puja signifies, worship of the self or spirit within. Vari-ous rites carried out in this pooja to purify and empower the soul and invokes well being and lon-gevity of the participant. On the occasion, a fashion pa-rade was also organised to high-light the traditional Newari costumes and items/equipment where all the team members along with their kids took part.

NANT organized Deusi Bhai-lo to raise a fund to support Nepali Language and Cultural class on 20, 21 and 22 October 2017. A total of $2465 was col-lected during 3 days of Tihar.

All amount collected from this event was set aside towards the support of NANT Nepalese language and culture classes at Casuarina and Palmerston.

NANT would like to show our gratitude to all the community members, for your tremendous support to make our “Deusi Vailo” program a success and special thanks to Mr. Narayan Dahal and Mr. Sewak Raj Sub-edi. Your presence and gener-osity toward Nepalese language and cultural class was very ap-preciable and our kids has been benefited in many ways.

10th AGM of NANT was held on 7 December 2017 at Filipino Community Centre. NANT Secre-tary Anjana Baral started with wel-coming all the financial members. During the meeting NANT Presi-dent Sudeep Shrestha present the President’s report for year 2016/17and Vice President Anil Basnet presented the audited financial report for the year 2016/17.

NANT and Gurung Community of Darwin jointly organised Lhosar (Gu-rung’s New Year) on 30th December 2017 at Harmony Hall, Malak. The program was inaugurated by lighting the candle by elder mother from the Gurung community. It was celebrated with fun-filled activities and games like Tug of War, Hot Potato, Cultural Dance and Music. The winners of the games were presented with gifts. Similarly, three lucky winners were gifted $200 Silk air voucher.

NANT organised Saraswati Puja on 22nd January 2018 at Hindu Temple, Priest Mr. Narayan Dahal had performed puja with all the ritual needed. Community members along with kids participated to worship Goddess of Knowledge, music, arts, wisdom (Saraswati). NANT distributed small gifts, exercise books and pencils to all kids who were presented Prasad (Food devotional offering made to god) were later shared among devotees.

NANT celebrated the New Year 2018 by organising a TOPI DIWAS at Jingili Water Gardens on 01 JAN 2018. TOPI DI-WAS was first ever program being organised by NANT where all the participants were invited to wear a Nepalese nation-al cap as a gesture to conserve and preserve our culture and teach our young kids the importance and significance of our culture and tradition.The program was well received highlighted by a huge turnout by community members with their traditional dress and topi.NANT President wished Happy and prosperous New Year 2018 to all community members and all the participants shared new year wish to each other. To establish itself and advance further as a club, Darwin Hearts MINIROOS was a dream of Dar-win Hearts FC (DHFC) since its establishment. Finally, the dream came true due to continuous effort of the DHFC, NANT and also Australi-an Government. Department of Industry, Inno-vation and Science under grants “STRONGER COMMUNITIES PROGRAM – Round 3” recom-mendation by Hon. Luke John Gosling (MP) Fed-eral Member for Solomon provided partial fund for the establishment for kids soccer training and facilities to NANT to be administered by DHFC .The registration date was 11th of FEB 2018 and the training and practice was commenced a week later from February 17. Currently, every Sunday Kids under 6 and 7 years play FFNT MiniRoos tourna-ments at various venues in Darwin and Palmer-ston. Any community members who would like to more about this or would like their children who is under 7 years of age are requested to contact NANT or DHFC representatives.Event photo link

After the enormous success of last year, this year also NANT organized Holi Celebration event at Jingili Water Garden on 2nd March 2018 from 3 Pm to 7:30 PM. DJ Su-shil was invited all the way from Sydney to make the event musical and enjoyable. NANT provided free colour for all the participants to share best wishes and happiness among each other. To showcase Nepali diverse and rich culture and foods for the wid-er community, Nepalese Associa-tion of Northern Territory Inc. and Non- Resident Nepali Association of Northern Territory jointly organized an event “Nepal Festival – Nepalese New Year 2075 B.S.” along with Food and cultural show at Darwin Water-front on 14 April 2018. The event was special for NANT to celebrate its 10th Year anniversary.It has been felt by many participants

that the event was not only instrumen-tal to connect us to our heritage, cul-ture and proud country “NEPAL” but to give a message to wider Darwin so-ciety about the richness of Nepali cul-tural diversity back in Nepal as well as in Darwin which was reflected in the Chief Minister’s speech also. The for-mal program was started by welcome Speech from Larrakeyah Speaker Al-lyson (Ali) Mills followed by speech-es from guests including from Nepali Ambassador for Australia Her Excel-lency Ms Lucky Sherpa, Hon Chief Minister Michael Gunner. Nepalese traditional and cultural dances, Lak-he Dance, Kumari and Bajra yogini Dance by Melbourne Group, Cultural house, Food stall, Nepali Instrumen-tal music by Mahaguthi Melbourne, Edge Band from Nepal , Random Space Band – Darwin, Kids Fashion Show, Ghintang Ghisi Twak Dance on Parade were few attractions to name of this event. We would like to thank all the hard-working volunteers and performers to make this event grand success.

BUDDHA JAYANTI

On the occasion of 2562nd Buddha Jayanti, 5th May 2018, NANT organ-ize the preach (prabachan) at Inter-national Buddhist Centre, Leanyer to celebrate birth anniversary of the magnificent spiritual leader Gautam Buddha, the founder of ‘Buddhism’. Rituals and speech was delivered by Srilankan Bhanta (Monk) followed by candle lighting.

In 2018 as well, NANT organized “Satyanarayan Pooja” and “Graha Shan-ti Pooja” – a very essential Pooja for the Hinduism followers on 12 May 2018 at Hindu Temple, Malak. It is believed that this Pooja brings all followers to-gether by seeding love and respect for other human beings in their heart. . NANT also believe that this Pooja will help to bring all members of Darwin Nepali community together for each other. Mr. Sudarshan Kumar and Mr. Shi-va Ram Poudel took an initiation as priest and co-priest during the puja The surplus fund generated from puja was contributed towards NANT Language and Cultural Class. Like every year on 26th May 2018, NANT participated in the Darwin Waterfront Harmony Soiree 2018, the biggest Multicultural event of North-ern Territory jointly organised by NT Government and its partners to show and share Nepali cultures, costumes and foods with other different com-munities residing in Darwin. On this occasion, NANT fully utilised oppor-tunity to promote the essence of Ne-pali culture through its community stall, food stall and cultural perfor-mance (dance).

For the first time in harmony day, this year NANT presented KUMARI (Ne-pali living Goddess) parade along with kids in traditional cultural costumes. NANT community stall exhibited verities of traditional musical instru-ments: Dhaka Topi, Buddha Statue and other religious instrument, also distributed some flyers to share infor-mation of Nepal. The cultural perfor-mance was presented by Nepali Lan-guage and Cultural Class – Casuarina kids on the stage. On behalf of NANT, Yogi’s Way - one of Nepali Restaurants in Darwin provided Nepali Authentic foods at Food stall on th event.

>>> NEPALI LANGUAGE AND CULTURAL CLASS GRADUATION <<<

NANT has been successfully running Nepali language and cultural class for children from Darwin Nepali com-munity at Casuarina and Palmerston once a week. The objective of this activity is to protect and promote Nepali Language and culture among Nepalese children living in the Northern territory.

On 17 June 2018, NANT organized a graduation program at Jingli Garden Park for all kids who have been attend-ing Nepali Language and Cultural class. The aim of the event to appreciate children’s active participation in the language and cultural class as well as their participation in every multicultural event organised by other commu-nities including NANT events and their contribution to promote our tradition and culture with wider Darwin community.

To encourage children for their continual involvement, NANT distributed “Certificate of Participation” along with small Stationery gift pack to all the Language class kids. NANT also organised a BBQ on that day as a gesture to thank all kids and parents for their contribution.
