Tyn-y-nant

The reports and stories we have included in the 2012 Annual Report reflect the Tyn-y-nant Christian Centre’s core value of enabling as many people as possible to experience God and the impact on our campers, supporters, volunteersand partner churches. Thank you for sharing the experience.

Thousands of people feel that ‘Camp’ is a very special place; God’s place. Traditions are created here and memories are cherished for a lifetime. Tyn-y-nant, the home of Merseyside Christian Youth Camps since 1963, has become a special place through the gifts of supporters, the participation of campers, the commitment of our partner churches, the gift of time given from our volunteers and prayer. And more prayer.

Each experience gives us all a closer connection to this place, to each other and more importantly, to God.

Joe, a camper Seniors 2

Never have I been so inspired in my entire life. I remember the days that I cried whenever I had to leave camp, as a child I could not bearthe pressure brought on by leaving the safe haven that is camp.

But today, I sat on that bus and I could not wait to get back, I am going to shake up my church, I am going to set fire to my friends (spiritually not literally) and I am not going to forget for one second the simple beautiful truth I have learned this week.

My experience at Junior camp 2012 was a fantastic mix of laughter, action packed fun and fellowship with leaders and campers. It was also one of the wettest weeks at camp! Overall we experienced God's love and presencein an awesome way... roll on 2013. Matt Petch

This week we looked at Phillipians, focussing on living out the truths, written by Paul, in everyday 21st century life. Our padres led with amix of cerebral/expositional androoted-in-real-life experience styles. This gave us a great balance of solidteaching and shared experience - justright for the group.Thursday evening’s Murder Mysteryworked really well - one or two whohad been quiet-ish during the weekcame into their own as the dramaunfolded. “ This year Camp Abererch started in March with awell attended Weekend. This coupled with many of

the staff returning from last year meant that the mainSummer Camp Abererch got off to a really fast start.

Along with Holiday Club and two teen groups, this yearsaw the first Mums and Tots sessions. Thursday evening was

Family Evening. Five years ago we struggled to attract a fewmums - this year we saw whole families.

Abererch Re-visited on 1st/2nd December will further allowus to build the relationships and take another opportunity to

share our God with them.Duncan Grimshaw, Director

The memory verse for the children was an adapted version of Titus 2. 11-14:God has shown us how kind He is by coming and saving everyone. He taught us to leave our bad ways and be good. We are hoperful as we wait for Him. He gave Himself to rescue us from evil. He wants us to be His and be eager to do good.

Camp Abererch is proving to be a valuable training groundfor developing Leaders. There is ample scope for initiativeswith the various groups and this year great study in the bookof James: challenging the staff on the expected behaviour ofa Christian.

A brilliant week with an outrageously packedprogramme that was thoroughly enjoyed by all of the107 camper who went. I’ve come away with manyhappy memories and having made new friendships. The young people from our church have all commentedthat it was an immense week (one of our boys evensaid it was the best week of his life!) and that theycan’t wait to go back again next year. The Merseyside Christian Youth Camps, MCYC or just ‘Camp’, have been run through theSummer holidays at Tyn-y-nant since 1964. The weeks are age grouped with accommodation for boysin large tents whilst the girls have to stay in new chalets. Every week gives campers the opportunity to make lifelong friendships, have a really fun time and experience God - for the first time or in a refreshing new way. We are always looking for new partner churches and campers and for new ways to enable more and more people to enjoy this special place!

Our Padres took us through the

challenge of ‘running the race’ and

what it means to live for God; in a

fantastic new style evening session:

Think holiday evening entertainment,

a worship gig and challenging testimonies

rolled into one. In fact by the end of the

week there was a queue of campers

wanting to share testimony in the

‘God rocks my world’ time.

Bigger than last year; it proved to be

a great week of fun, games and worship

(and Dave Johnson’s bad jokes).

Olympic themed Sports Day ended

in an epic water fight and the legendary

water slide!

“ The week’s Spiritual theme:‘Here comes the bride - Funerals and Feasts’was challenging with questions that requireda great deal of thought.Friday evening brought us a memorableillustration with two wedding dresses; one torn and soiled, the other white and pure.

A 3-course Wedding Breakfast on Friday eveningis a good example of the flexible and relaxedway the week ran - all in excellent weather!

Family Camp is amazing; girls have such a great time & playwith everyone no matter what age. My girls are includedin everything! Always someone around to talk to and Ilove the evening get-togethers too. It’s just like on big happy family!

“ Great God centred family fun, at areasonable cost. Safe environment forthe children to thrive and the adultsto relax...The kids start packing in February, love it! ”

Family Camp has been running for quite some years now and has asimilar setup to ‘normal’ MCYC weeks. The majority of those that go and certainly those that run it have allthe real MCYC ‘Camp’ experience. As part of a number of planned changes to encourage growth; in 2013we will be welcoming Family Camp into the mainstream of Summer MCYC Camps.

Ever since the first camps were held in 1946, we have essentially been a volunteer-based organisation. We have always needed ‘do-ers’; people with a lot of different skills. This special place didn’t build and doesn’t maintain itself; and every week of camp requires leaders and site officers and catering staff and shopkeepers; we have Council and committee members and camp reps and more.We should be tremendously grateful to our God, that over all these years, He has provided and encouraged such a broad range of truly talented and willing volunteers.

Weekends @ Tyn-y-nant

Tyn-y-nant, the home of MCYC since 1963, has played an important part in bringing 1000's of young peopleto know Jesus Christ. With the development of superb new kitchens and four 23-bed underfloor heated chalets we are now able to share this incredible place with others. In 2012 some 20 weekends have seen a variety of churches and charities enjoying this special place. The centre is now booked for weekends through November.

If you haven’t been away as a group for too long or you’relooking for a new venue, why not try Tyn-y-nant. Email us at [email protected]

Tyn-y-nant was the perfect place to take our mixed age choir and their families. From the moment we arrived on site we began to build new relationships and strengthen old ones. One of the guys commented that he had never been somewhere where he felt so relaxed so quickly! The facilities were ideal for our group; the children could play freely and the adults could relax. Two of our group are wheelchair users and they were made up with the accessibility of the rooms and the site in general. From cooking together to walks down to the beach, from the camphi-theatre to the rec room, every day was filled with fun and a chance to get to know each other better. And of course there was lots of singing! The weekend was a fantastic success, and the day we got back we booked to go again! ”

Leadership Training4 Saturdays in April, May, June & July

This year we went from a training mini-weekend in 2011 to holding fourSaturday Training events over the April-July period. These were well attended and included sessions on Child Protection,Health & Safety, Practical Issues, Youth Work, Challenging Behaviourand Leading Group Times. In 2013 we will launch the first Leadership Week. This will be specificallyaimed at 16-21 year olds and will include the best quality spiritual inputtogether with high level leadership development - and a FANTASTIC WEEK of Camp!

The earlier young people acquire leadership skills, the easier it will be for them to succeed in life andaccomplish their goals.Starting in 2013, our Leadership Week will developleadership skills through a range of activities, greatspeakers, small group discussions, large grouppresentations; all whilst making life-long friendships! As C.S.Lewis once said, we are trying to re-take territory that has been taken by the enemy. We are trying to re-capture society, culture and all creation for Jesus Christ.

“From the first Tyn-y-nant Christian Education Centre brochure. Most photos taken during the March visit of fifteen 12yr olds fromSt George of England Specialist Engineering College, Bootle.

In 1944 a Sunday School teachercalled Bill Buckley had an idea: take young people away from their normal environment, enable teachers to get alongside them with the thought that they would learn more and thelearning would stay with them. And the young people would have a great time!

Since 1945, through the charity, thousands of young peoplehave learnt more: about themselves, others, the natural environmentand God.

In 1963 we purchased Tyn-y-nant,a 10 acre smallholding with a typicalWelsh stone cottage with a lean-to‘beudy’ or barn. The cottage is stillhere but the barn is now a self-contained ‘apartment’.

Over the last few years we haveinvested over £1.2 million in veryhigh quality kitchens and four remarkable 23-bed chalets.

So, we have had a long timeto develop the purpose of thiswonderful place.

The core value of the Trust is:enabling as many people aspossible to experience God.We believe in encouragingeducation for sustainabledevelopment whilst ensuringstudents have the freedom to becreative, to have some independence, time for reflective learning andteam working; all in a safe, caringChristian place.

At a people level; to achieve this we decided that our staff would really be experts in their fields. This makes it much easier to getalongside the students and for usto be so much more ...

Dear Supporters We praise God for 67 years of Merseyside Christian Youth Camps (MCYC) and latterly the Tyn-y-Nant Christian Centre (TNCC) – I am conscious that, as Chairman of the Centre, I am following in the footsteps of giants who in 1945 pioneered a work which has had an impact on so many thousands of lives. Today churches from various independent and denominational streams support us through prayer, finances and sending their children, young people and leaders to MCYC. If it was not for the commitment and generosity of Christians throughout Merseyside and beyond and God’s gracious hand, MCYC would not exist. This booklet lists last year alone over 300 volunteers and supporters who have donated their time and finances to MCYC. Over the years many thousands of volunteers have given their time and energies to MCYC; for which we are grateful. We provide for churches a place where children and young people can enjoy a holiday where they are challenged and encouraged in the Christian faith. Every year we hear reports of children coming to faith in Christ and this spurs us on to continue the work. For leaders we are able to offer training in leadership skills and Christian discipleship. This year a quarter of the leaders at Camp undertook some form of training and elsewhere in this Report there are details of how we intend to expand this service of training young leaders for participating churches. The TNCC trustees have seen £1.3m invested in the site in the last ten years and now want to share our first rate facilities with others. Recently we obtained a licence to operate for 10.5 months in the year. Many churches have been using TNCC to take their youth groups away for weekends, and now we believe that there is an opportunity to present Christian teaching to thousands of English and Welsh school children by staffing and using the site mid-week as a field study centre. Consequently, in the next year we will be seizing the window of opportunity that the current legislation affords to present the Christian faith to school children. I would commend this Report to you and pray that you will join with us through prayer, finance or in practical ways to support the Trustees of TNCC as they develop the work to the glory of God.
