Penitential Disciplines of Lent

The Christian faithful, during Lent, are clearly conscious of the need to turn the mind towards those realities which really count, which require Gospel commitment and integrity of life which, through self-denial of those things which are superfluous, are translated into good works and solidarity with the poor and the needy. (Directory on Popular Piety and the Liturgy, #125)

In addition to choosing their own penitential practices, Catholics are also asked to observe the practices of fasting and abstinence during the 40 days of Lent. The Lenten Fast and Abstinence Regulations are as follows:

Everyone 14 years of age or over is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent.

Everyone 18 years of age and under 59 years of age is bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

(The obligation of fasting ceases with the celebration of one’s 59th birthday.) On Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, only one full

meatless meal is allowed. Two other smaller meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken

according to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted on these two days, but liquids, including milk and fruit juices are allowed. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. Catholics should not lightly excuse themselves from

these prescribed minimal penitential practices.

First Sunday of Lent

Then the devil took him up to a very high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in their magnificence, and he said to him, "All these I shall give to you, if you will prostrate yourself and worship me." At this, Jesus said to him, "Get away, Satan!" - Mt 4:8-10a

************************************************************** "Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil." Today's Gospel brings us face-to-face with the reality of spiritual warfare. A battle is going on in the desert. The devil is out to win the allegiance of the Son of God. But Jesus fights back. Not with fists or knives, but with the word of God. For every temptation the devil proposes, Jesus arms himself with "the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God" (Eph 6:17). This strategy proves effective. Ultimately, "the devil left him," and then Jesus was consoled by the presence of angels. In our modern era, we face a new temptation: to deny the existence of spiritual beings. Angels appear to be little more than lawn ornaments or Christmas crafts, and too often the devil is reduced to an analogy for the vague presence of evil. Perhaps the greatest achievement of the father of lies, as Pope Francis has suggested, is to make us believe that he does not exist. But the word of God gives us a different idea: "Be sober and vigilant. Your opponent the devil is prowling around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour" (1 Pt 5:8). This is no fairy tale. Satan wants to win our allegiance too. During Lent, we have the opportunity to fortify ourselves for this serious, if silent, combat. Just as Jesus fasted and prayed for forty days before that diabolical encounter, we take these forty days of Lent to "conquer" the weak spots where we are susceptible to attack. We fast to strengthen our self-control, we give alms to strengthen our generosity, and we pray to strengthen our faith in God's power and providence. A sincere effort now, in the "desert" of Lent, can lead us to victory as we engage in the ongoing spiritual battle for the allegiance of our souls.

Taize’ Prayer

Lent is a time of “retreat” before the Easter celebrations. During these forty days, in communion with Christ in the desert, each Christian is called to conversion, to turn our entire being towards God. This quiet and beautiful season offers an invitation to take “time apart” to reflect and draw closer to God. And, Taize’ Prayer is a wonderful response to that invitation. This lovely, meditative prayer style combines simple and accessible music, reflective readings, and silence. Plan to be with us on Monday, March 13 at 7:00 PM for a peaceful and enriching Lenten prayer experience.

Diocese of Madison Annual Catholic Appeal 2017 “We will Serve the Lord”

The theme for the 2017 Annual Catholic Appeal of the Diocese of Madison concentrates serving the Lord. We ask that God grant us a renewed sense of responsibility to truly Serve Him in our parishes, our diocese and the Church throughout the world. We ask that His grace make us even more generous in supporting those needs.

Each pledge to the Annual Catholic Appeal supports diocesan ministries, education and services and assures a strong future for the Diocese of Madison and the people that it serves.

This year each of us is asked to consider making a pledge, payable over five months. Your gift will help enable the diocese to reach its goal and provide grant opportunities for Catholic schools, religious education programs and assisting distressed parishes in need.

If you received your pledge form in the mail, please complete it and mail it back.

Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response.

Prayer of the Faithful

May we come together in our work of enabling those throughout our diocese to know, to love, and To serve the Lord through generously giving to this year’s Annual Catholic Appeal, and may we all join together and proclaim, “As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” We pray to the Lord.
