REFLECTIONS - Fourth Sunday of Easter - Following Jesus’ example is not easy. He did what was right even if others disagreed with him. He did not exchange insults with those who sought to put him down and harm him nor did he threaten to retaliate. How do you respond to those who disagree with you or seek to do you harm? Do you seek to “get back” at those who you regard as your enemies? Do you strive to treat everyone with dignity and respect regardless of who they are or what they believe? Do you try to not only forgive those who try to hurt you, but make an effort to treat them kindly and with respect?

“Only goodness and kindness follow me all the days of my life.” - Psalm 23:6 Reprinted with permission from S.T. Productions.

From a homily on the Gospels by Saint Gregory the Great, Pope (Hom. 14,3-6: PL 76, 1129-1130)

Christ the Good Shepherd I am the good shepherd. I know my own – by which I mean, I love them – and my own know me. In plain words: those who love me are willing to follow me, for anyone who does not love the truth has not yet come to know it. My dear brethren, you have heard the test we pastors have to undergo. Turn now to consid-er how these words of our Lord imply a test for yourselves also. Ask yourselves whether you belong to his flock, whether you know him, whether the light of his truth shines in your minds. I assure you that it is not by faith that you will come to know him, but by love; not by mere conviction, but by action. John the evangelist is my authority for this state-ment. He tells us that anyone who claims to know God without keeping his commandments is a liar. Consequently, the Lord immediately adds: As the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for my sheep. Clearly he means that laying down his life for his sheep gives evidence of his knowledge of the Father and the Father’s knowledge of him. In other words, by the love with which he dies for his sheep he shows how greatly he loves his Father. Again he says: My sheep hear my voice, and I know them; they follow me, and I give them eternal life. Shortly before this he had declared: If anyone enters the sheepfold through me he shall be saved; he shall go freely in and out and shall find good pasture. He will enter into a life of faith; from faith he will go out to vision, from belief to contemplation, and will graze in the good pastures of everlasting life. So our Lord’s sheep will finally reach their grazing ground where all who follow him in simplicity of heart will feed on the green pastures of eternity. These pastures are the spiritual joys of heaven. There the elect look upon the face of God with unclouded vision and feast at the banquet of life for ever more. Beloved brothers, let us set out for these pastures where we shall keep joyful festival with so many of our fellow citi-zens. May the thought of their happiness urge us on! Let us stir up our hearts, rekindle our faith, and long eagerly for what heaven has in store for us. To love thus is to be already on our way. No matter what obstacles we encounter, we must not allow them to turn us aside from the joy of that heavenly feast. Anyone who is determined to reach his destina-tion is not deterred by the roughness of the road that leads to it. Nor must we allow the charm of success to seduce us, or we shall be like a foolish traveler who is so distracted by the pleasant meadows through which he is passing that he for-gets where he is going.

—————— With this reflection from Pope Saint Gregory the Great on today’s Gospel and Sunday of the Good Shepherd, let us re-connect with Jesus, who is our companion on our way to the Heavenly Father, to everlasting life. Because of COVID-19, it is hard to do social distancing with the congregation gathering for Mass. Yet we know our meeting Jesus, Our Good Shepherd, at Mass gives us the closeness and intimacy with our Blessed Lord and with each other as brothers and sisters in Christ. Together we are his flock. This activity helps us feel Christ’s presence, as we experience His pres-ence. We welcome Him with love from the bottom of our hearts. While our absence from Mass brings us too long for Jesus more, let us keep our closeness with Him in a Spiritual Com-munion. We join St. Alphonsus Liguori in his Spiritual Communion: “My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the most Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there, and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be sepa-rated from You. Amen.”

WHY DO WE DO THAT? - CATHOLIC LIFE EXPLAINED

Q: I have a friend who says she doesn’t need to attend Mass because she prays to God eve-ry day. What are your thoughts on this justi-fication?

A: If the only reason for going to church were to talk to God, your friend might be right. Prayer is not something limited to a physical place or even a holy place. If the sole purpose of the Church were prayer, it would be a narrow pur-pose indeed. The Church is a community of be-lievers, formed by “one Lord, one faith, one Baptism.” It is an outward sign of our faith in God instituted by Christ, and the purpose of the Church is to give us grace, that is, a share in God’s life. Coming to Mass is not really for God’s sake, but for ours. If we believe that Jesus is truly pre-sent in the Holy Eucharist, then we will want to be in His presence. We will want to be fed by Him. Our daily prayer and good works are strengthened by our authentic encounter with our Lord. For Catholics, it is at Mass that we celebrate the source and summit of our faith. If this is true, why would we ever stay away?

CURRENT EVENTS Fourth Sunday of Easter

May 3, 2020

Reading I: Acts 2:14a, 36-41 • St. Luke tells us St. Peter often testified: “Save yourself from this corrupt generation.” How is this message still applicable today? Reading II: 1 Peter 2:20b-25 • St. Peter asserts that the virtue of patience in one’s suffering is a grace from God because Jesus modeled patient suffering. How does the exercise of this spiritual disposition help bring peace of mind? Gospel: John 10:1-10 • Using the metaphor of sheep and gatekeeper, Jesus teaches his disciples the importance of remaining focused on his voice. Why do you think people are so easily distracted from other voices?
