The Breaking of the Bread / Ka Whawhati I te Taro

Last   weekend,   most   of   the   clergy   along   with   oursynod   reps,   Ross   and   Anne   Smith   attended   the   39th

Diocesan Synod which was held in Stratford. 

What has resonated with me since synod has been to think resourcefully of waysin doing Church in the 21st century. This was set out in the Bishops’ charge at theopening of synod. One of the ways the Bishops exercise their leadership is bytrying to set the direction and priorities of the Diocese giving their charge, or ifyou like, the bishops entrusting this task/s to us all! So, for the past three yearsin these synods our Bishops have given an outline of their threefold episcopalvision: that  grounded in prayer,  we are  equipped for discipleship, and  connected tocommunity. The focus for 2017 is ‘connecting to community’.

This was my first synod experience which was a real eye­opener to the realitiesof   where   the   church   stands   today.   It   was   also   a   challenge   of   how   ourproclamation of the Good News is lived out. In the bishops charge they said this,

“All too often our proclamation of the Good News, our living out of our faith is beingshaped by the needs of the church rather than by the demands of the kingdom”…. “so weare defined by anxiety and a sense of crisis, and the need to fix things, rather than a senseof Krisis – (The New Testament describes this word as a permanent new state ofliving with one foot in the world where God’s reign is  the only power to bereckoned with)  God has intervened, the world is a different place, we need to live bydifferent values and be driven by a different imperative – we are an Easter people and“Alleluia is our song”

One of the Gospel references that the Bishops’ used to illustrate their charge wasfrom Matt 21:43, where Jesus talks about the kingdom of God, that it  will  betaken away from you and given to people that yields the fruits of the kingdom. Ireally like this verse! Why? Because it’s frank, challenging and reiterates that weneed to be people of ‘kingdom fruit growers’. 

Our bishops say that “we are a Church in  Krisis”. What does this mean… it’srecognising already what God is doing in our midst, however expanding ourvision of what Christian community and mission looks like moving forward andthe need to seek out and discern innovative ways of enabling this ­ we are anEaster people and Alleluia is our Song!

Sunday 12 November 'Sharing our Story' - the second in our series, this time sharing our story of the history of St Mary's, including the history of someof those buried in our graveyard.

New Plymouth Boys High School are holding a year 9 five day camp, in thelast week of this term. A special memorial service for families where there has been a stillbirth or neonatal death, or an abortion or miscarriage. This gentle service is for you, whether your child died recently or years ago. A time to remember, to reflect and to pray for your child. To light a candle and to honour the life of your baby.
