  • THE ACCIDENTAL ADMIRALA Sailor Takes Command at NATO

By Adm. James Stavridis, USN (Ret.)

After he was selected to be NATOs sixteenth Supreme Allied Commander, The New York Times described Jim Stavridis as a Renaissance admiral. A U. S. Naval Academy graduate with a masters degree and doctorate from The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, conversant in both French and Spanish, this author of numerous books and articles impressed the Navys leaders and senior Pentagon civilians with his wide range of interests, educational background, keen understanding of strategic doctrine, mastery of long-range planning, and command of international affairs.

Since NATO had previously been led by Army and Air Force generals, Stavridis saw his assignment as the first naval officer to take command as somewhat accidental. As the American and NATO commander in Europe responsible for 120,000 coalition troops serving in fifty-one nations, on three continents and at sea he had come a long way since almost leaving the Navy for law school five years after receiving his commission.

The Accidental Admiral offers an intimate look at the challenges of directing NATO operations in Afghanistan, military intervention in Libya, and preparation for possible war in Syriaas well as worrying about the Balkans, cyber threats, and piracy, all while cutting NATO by a third due to budget reductions by the twenty-eight nations of the alliance. More than just describing the history of the times, Stavridis also shares his insights into the personalities of President Barack Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Secretaries of Defense Robert Gates, Leon Panetta, and Chuck Hagel, Afghan President Hamid Karzai; Generals David Petraeus, Stanley McChrystal, John Allen, and many more.

Known as an innovator and an early adopter of technology and social media, Stavridis ability to think outside the box and sail in uncharted waters is unmatched. He shares his insights on leadership, strategic communications, planning, and the convergence of threats that will confront the United States and its allies in the near future. Stavridis is an advocate of the use of Smart Power, which he defines as the balance of hard and soft power. He explains that in creating security in the twenty-first century it is critical to build bridges, not walls, and stresses the need to connect international, interagency, and public-private actors to achieve security.

ADM. JAMES STAVRIDIS, USN (RET.) is a 1976 distinguished graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy who spent over 35 years on active service in the Navy. He commanded destroyers and a carrier strike group in combat and served for seven years as a four-star admiral, including nearly four years as the first Navy officer chosen as Supreme Allied Commander for Global Operations at NATO. After retiring from the Navy he was named the dean of The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University in 2013. In addition, he currently serves as the U.S. Naval Institute's Chair of the Board of Directors. He has written articles on global security issues for The New York Times, The Washington Post, Atlantic Magazine, Naval War College Review, and Proceedings and is the author or co-author of several books, including Command at Sea 6th Ed. and Destroyer Captain.

DESTROYER CAPTAINLessons of a First Command

By Adm. James Stavridis, USN (Ret.)

James Stavridis memoir of his two years in command of the destroyer USS Barry is an insightful account of a first-time naval command, told through the eyes of an officer undergoing the experience from the bridge of a destroyer, with all the joy, doubt, self-examination, hope, and fear that such a journey imparts. From Haiti to the Balkans to the Arabian Gulf, the Barry was involved in operations throughout the world during Stavridis' 19931995 tour. Drawing upon the journals he kept for the entire period, Stavridis reveals the complex nature of those deployments and describes life on board the Barry and liberty ashore for sailors and officers alike.

ZUMWALTThe Life and Times of Admiral Elmo Russell Bud Zumwalt Jr.

    By Larry Berman

GERMAN LIGHT CRUISERS OF WORLD WAR IIEmden, Knigsberg, Karlsruhe, Kln, Leipzig, Nrnberg

By Gerhard Koop and Klaus-Peter Schmolke

The warships of the World War II era German Navy are among the most popular subjects in naval history with many books devoted to the subject. However, for a concise but authoritative summary of the design history and careers of the major surface ships, it is difficult to beat the six volumes in the Warships of the Kriegsmarine series. Now in paperback for the first time, this sixth volume in the series is devoted to the six ships from Emden to Nrnberg that were built between the wars. Primarily intended for commerce-raiding, the war gave them few opportunities for such employment, although they did provide useful support for key naval operations in the Baltic and North Sea.

GERMAN BATTLECRUISERS OF WORLD WAR ONE Their Design, Construction and Operations

By Gary Staff Illustrations by Marsden Samuel

This is the most comprehensive, English-language study of the German Imperial Navys battlecruisers that served in the First World War. Known as Panzerkreuzer, literally armored cruiser, the eight ships of the class were to be involved in several early North Sea skirmishes before the great pitched battle of Jutland where they inflicted devastating damage on the Royal Navys battlecruiser fleet. This book details their design and construction, and traces the full service history of each ship, recounting their actions, drawing largely from first-hand German sources and official documents, many previously unpublished in English.

GARY STAFF has studied the Imperial German Navy for much of his life and has frequently traveled to Germany and elsewhere to consult relevant archives. His most recent book is Battle on the Seven Seas: German Cruiser Battles, 19141918.

GERHARD KOOP served in both the Kriegesmarine and the postwar Bundesmarine and became one of Germanys leading authorities on warship design and the author of numerous highly regarded books. KLAUS-PETER SCHMOLKE is an illustrator well known for the detail and accuracy of his technical naval drawings.

FIRE ON THE WATER China, America, and the Future of the Pacific

    By Robert Haddick

In Fire on the Water, Robert Haddick contends that much of the general public and many U.S. policy experts are unaware of the threat that Chinas military modernization poses to Americas national interests in the Asia-Pacific region. He maintains that within a decade China will have the military power to place U.S. influence throughout East Asia at risk. To avoid a future crisis, the United States needs to fashion a new and more competitive strategy, one that better matches the strengths of the United States and its allies against Chinas vulnerabilities.

The U.S. forward military presence in East Asia is essential to protecting Americas standard of living, its strategic interests, and the regions stability. This will be an increasingly difficult burden for the United States to sustain. However, U.S. forward presence will be less costly and less risky than encouraging Chinas neighbors to counter Chinas rising power by themselves, which would likely result in an unstable arms race and a conflict that would damage Americas interests.

Chinas military strategy, centered on its rapidly expanding aerospace, naval, and land-based missile forces, is exploiting emerging vulnerabilities in Americas forces in the region. Plagued by institutional barriers, the United States has been slow to adapt to Chinas rapid military modernization. Current U.S. responses are impractical, because they expend defense resources against Chinas strengths rather than its weaknesses.

Fire on the Water proposes far-reaching changes to U.S. diplomacy, military programs, and strategies to counter Chinas well-designed military modernization plan. The proposed competitive strategy will strengthen deterrence and bolster the credibility of U.S. alliances in the region. Throughout history the rapid arrival of a new great power has usually resulted in conflict. The United States, China, and Asia can avoid that fate if the United States adopts a more competitive strategy to influence Chinas choices and thus maintain the regions stability and prosperity.

ROBERT HADDICK is a military analyst with three decades of experience researching security trends in Asia. He is currently based in Washington, D.C., as a research contractor for U.S. Special Operations Command. A former U.S. Marine Corps officer with service in East Asia and Africa, he has also been a columnist for Foreign Policy Magazine, the managing editor of Small Wars Journal, and a consultant to U.S. Central Command, the U.S. State Department, and the National Intelligence Council.

    SEAFORTH WORLD NAVAL REVIEW, 2015

    Edited by Conrad Waters

Now in its seventh year, this annual has established an international reputation as an authoritative but affordable single volume summary of all the developments in the naval world over the previous twelve months. It combines regional surveys with one-off major articles on noteworthy new ships and other important developments. Besides the latest warship projects, it also looks at wider issues of importance to navies, such as aviation and electronics, and calls on experts from around the globe to give a balanced picture of what is going on and to interpret its significance. There are technological reviews dealing with naval aviation by Davis Hobbs, and current mine warfare developments by Norman Friedman, while warship recycling is discussed by Ian Buxton. Intended to make interesting reading as well as providing authoritative reference, it contains specially commissioned drawings and the most up-to-date photographs.

CONRAD WATERS, a barrister by training and a banker by profession, has had a lifelong interest in modern navies about which he has written many articles. He is the founding editor of the World Naval Review and compiled the annual review of navies for the journal Warship for a number of years.

ANDREW FALTUM served as an air intelligence officer on board USS Midway home ported in Yokosuka, Japan, before joining the Navy Reserve, where he retired as a commander. He is the author of The Independence Light Aircraft Carriers and The Essex Aircraft Carriers.

THE SPEARHEADERSA Personal History of Darbys Rangers

By James Altieri With a new introduction by Mir Bahmanyar

The outlook for a victory by the Allied Powers was in doubt in 1942. When only two untested American divisions arrived in the European theatre, Gen. Lucien K. Truscott conceived the plan of organizing an American commando unit to be known as the Rangers. Maj. William O. Darby was placed in command of the first Ranger Battalion and proved himself an officer of such extraordinary leadership that his unit became known as Darbys Rangers. The Spearheaders is an account from an enlisted mans point of view of the intensely dramatic career of the Rangers.

JAMES J. ALTIERI was president of the WWII Rangers Remembrance Society and a member of the U.S. Army Ranger Hall of Fame. He was a technical advisor on films and authored Darbys Rangers. MIR BAHMANYAR is the author of Darbys Rangers 1942-45.

THE PURGE OF THE THIRTIETH DIVISION

By Major General Henry Dozier RussellEdited by Lawrence M. Kaplan

The Purge of the Thirtieth Division is the only known account by any of the eighteen National Guard division commanders mobilized in 1940 and 1941. Russells memoir provides not only a first-hand look into the training of National Guard units in preparation for World War II, but also offers a scathing indictment of the Army high command for unfair treatment of National Guard officers. Featuring commentary from a recently retired Army National Guard general, this republication of Russells privately printed memoir sheds new light on a controversial chapter of the U.S. Army as it prepared to enter the war.

HENRY DOZIER RUSSELL (18891972) commanded the Thirtieth Infantry Division upon its mobilization for federal service in 1940 until he was relieved of the units command in 1942. He later commanded the newly created Forty-Eighth Infantry Division (National Guard) until his retirement in 1951. LAWRENCE M. KAPLAN is the command historian for U.S. Army Cyber Command and the author of Homer Lea: American Soldier of Fortune and editor of The Artillery Service in the War of the Rebellion. He lives in Reston, Virginia.

CUTTY SARKThe Last of the Tea Clippers

By Eric Kentley, with the Cutty Sark Trust

Cutty Sark was the greatest of the tea clippers and an iconic British institution. This new work describes the eventful history of this celebrated ship from her 1869 construction, her famous voyages, dramatic fire, painstaking restoration, and glorious reopening in April 2012. Developed with the Cutty Sark Trust, the book provides a chronological narrative along with detailed features on crew accounts, log entries, pieces on seamanship, ports and cargoes and broader tall ship culture, as well as an opportunity to focus on artifacts and the fittings of the clipper ship. It also includes rare and previously unpublished historical images from the ships collections and those of the National Maritime Museum.

DUTCH WARSHIPS IN THE AGE OF SAIL, 16001714Design, Construction, Careers, and Fates

    By James Bender

For most of the seventeenth century the Netherlands constituted the most important maritime power in the world, with by far the largest merchant fleet and dominance in seaborne trade, feared and envied by other countries. Born out of an 80-year struggle against Spain for independence, the Dutch republic relied on naval power to guarantee its freedom, promote its trade, and defend its overseas colonies. The Dutch navy was crucial to its survival and success, yet the ships that made up its fleets are among the least studied and most poorly documented of any in the age of sail. This history is the first definitive listing of all Dutch fighting ships.

JAMES BENDER developed an interest in the great Anglo-Dutch sea fights of the seventeenth century as a war gamer, but the search for definitive information on the ships involved led to a decade of intense research resulting in this book.

ERIC KENTLEY is a former curator at the National Maritime Museum and assistant director of Londons Design Museum. Now a freelancer, he assisted with the plans for the conservation of the Cutty Sark and authored the exhibition content. His books include Eyewitness Boat, Cornwall s Bridge and Viaduct Heritage and Discover the Titanic. He lives in south London.

FALLUJAH REDUXThe Anbar Awakening and the Struggle with Al-Qaeda

By Daniel R. Green and William F. Mullen IIIForeword by Gen. John Allen, USMC (Ret.)

Fallujah Redux is the first book about the Fallujah Awakening written by Operation Iraqi Freedom military veterans who served there, providing a comprehensive account of the turning of Fallujah away from the al-Qaeda insurgency in 2007. The city of Fallujah will long be associated with some of the worst violence and brutality of the Iraq War. Initially occupied by U.S. forces in 2003, it eventually served as the headquarters for numerous insurgent groups operating west of Baghdad, including al-Qaeda in Iraq and its leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, until forcibly retaken at the end of 2004.

Once the city was finally cleared, U.S. forces settled into the routine of waging a low-intensity warfare campaign against insurgent forces and trying to set the conditions for Iraqi government control. Even though U.S. forces were winning tactically, they struggled with a population that still strongly supported the insurgency. By the middle of 2007, four years after the initial invasion of Iraq, the city of Fallujah and its surrounding countryside were still mired in a seemingly intractable insurgency. As Anbar Provinces tribes began to turn against al-Qaeda, Fallujahs residents were waiting for the movement to push eastward to help them eliminate al-Qaeda but they needed the help of U.S. forces. A concerted pacification campaign, in coordination with tribal efforts, was implemented by U.S. and Iraqi security forces that fundamentally altered local security conditions in Fallujah.

This book describes the campaign that turned Fallujah from a perennial insurgent hotspot to an example of what can be achieved by the right combination of leadership and perseverance. Many books have told of the major battles in Fallujahthis book tells the rest of the story that never made the news.

DANIEL R. GREEN is a defense fellow at The Washington Institute for Near East Policy in Washington, D.C. He served in Fallujah, Iraq, in 2007 as a tribal and leadership engagement officer and is a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy Reserve. He received his PhD in political science from The George Washington University in 2012. BRIG. GEN.WILLIAM F. MULLEN III, USMC is a twenty-seven-year Marine infantry officer based in Quantico, Virginia, whose experience with Fallujah began when he served in the city as the operations officer for a Marine regimental combat team from 2005 to 2006, then as an infantry battalion commander in charge of the city for most of 2007. Author royalties from the first edition will be donated to the Semper Fi Fund, www.semperfifund.org.

WARSHIPS OF THE GREAT WAR ERAA History in Ship Models

    By David Hobbs

The National Maritime Museum in Greenwich houses the largest collection of scale ship models in the world, many of which are contemporary artifacts made by the craftsmen of the navy or the shipbuilders themselves, ranging from the mid-seventeenth century to the present day. Treated as historical evidence, they offer far more detail than even the best plans or the finest marine paintings. This book features a selection of over one hundred ship models, all in full color, of the various classes of warship that fought in the First World War, from dreadnoughts to coastal motor boats, including many close-up views. These color photos are captioned in depth, and many are also annotated to note interesting or unusual features. Although pictorial in emphasis, the book weaves the pictures into an authoritative text, producing an unusual and attractive form of technical history.

THE SHIP OF THE LINEA History in Ship Models

    By Brian Lavery

The Ship of the Line takes the best models from the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich to tell the story of the evolution of the ship of the line, known as the capital ship and epitome of British sea power during its heyday from 16501850. This period coincided with the golden age of ship modeling. Each volume depicts over one hundred models in full color photos, including many close-up and detail views. These photos are captioned in depth, but many are also annotated to focus attention on interesting or unusual features. The book weaves the pictures into an authoritative text, producing a unique form of technical history. Ship modelers and those with an interest in the development of ship design during the sailing era will be attracted to the in-depth analysis of this beautifully presented book.

BRIAN LAVERY is one of the UKs leading maritime historians and the author of Nelsons Navy. For many years he was the curator at the National Maritime Museum (NMM) and co-authored the authoritative work on the NMMs models, Ship Models: Their Purpose & Development from 1650 to the Present.

DAVID HOBBS spent thirty-three years as a Royal Navy pilot and since retirement has spent a period as curator of the Fleet Air Arm Museum and is the author of many highly regarded books, including A Century of Naval Aviation and The British Pacific Fleet.

AGAINST THE TIDERickovers Leadership Principles and the Rise of the Nuclear Navy

By Rear Admiral Dave Oliver, USN (Ret.)

Against the Tide is a leadership book that illustrates how Adm. Hyman Rickover made a unique impact on American and Navy culture. Dave Oliver is the first former nuclear submarine commander who sailed for the venerable admiral to write about Rickovers management techniques. Oliver draws upon a wealth of untold stories to show how one man changed American and Navy culture while altering the course of history.

The driving force behind Americas nuclear submarine navy, Rickover revolutionized naval warfare while concurrently proving to be a wellspring of innovation that drove American technology in the latter half of the twentieth-century. As a testament to his success, Rickovers single-minded focus on safety protected both American citizens and sailors from nuclear contamination, a record that is in stark contrast to the dozens of nuclear reactor accidents suffered by the Russians.

While Rickover has been the subject of a number of biographies, little has been written about his unique management practices that changed the culture of a two-hundred-year-old institution and affected the outcome of the Cold War. Rickovers achievements have been obscured because they were largely conducted in secret and because he possessed a demanding and abrasive personality that alienated many potential supporters. Nevertheless he was an extraordinary manager with significant lessons for all those in decision-making positions.

The author had the good fortune to know and to serve under Rickover during much of his thirty-year career in the Navy and is singularly qualified to demonstrate the management and leadership principles behind Rickovers success.

REAR ADMIRAL DAVE OLIVER, USN (RET.) is a 1963 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy who spent thirty-two years in the Navy, served at sea on board both diesel-electric and nuclear submarines, commanded a nuclear submarine, and served as chief of staff of the Seventh Fleet. His final military tour was as principal deputy to the civilian Navy acquisition executive. During the Clinton administration he was Principal Deputy Undersecretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics and in the Bush administration he was the director of management and budget for the Coalition Forces in Iraq. After leaving the Navy he was the CEO of the EADS, North America Defense Company as well as an executive at Northrop Grumman and Westinghouse. He now lives in Northern Virginia.

FIGHTING THE GREAT WAR AT SEAStrategy, Tactics and Technology

    By Norman Friedman

While the overriding image of the First World War is of the bloody stalemate on the Western Front, the overall shape of the war arose out of its maritime character. It was essentially a struggle about access to worldwide resources, most clearly seen in Germanys desperate attempts to counter the American industrial threat, which ultimately drew the United States into the war. This radical new book concentrates on the way in which each side tried to use or deny the sea to the other, and in so doing describes rapid wartime changes not only in ship and weapons technology but also in the way naval warfare was envisaged and fought. Melding strategic, technical, and tactical aspects, Friedman approaches the First World War from a fresh perspective and demonstrates how its perceived lessons dominated the way navies prepared for the Second World War.

A SHIPYARD AT WARUnseen Photographs from John Browns Clydebank, 1914 1918

    By Ian Johnston

A companion to the highly successful Clydebank Battlecruisers, this collection of stunning shipyard photos, most previously unpublished, further showcases the work of a major shipbuilder during the Great War. Although best known for large liners and capital ships, between 1914 and 1920, the Clydebank shipyard of John Brown & Sons built a vast range of vessels. This volume features 200 photos depicting in unprecedented detail every aspect of the yards output, from the liner Aquitania in 1914 to the cruiser Enterprise, completed in 1920. While ships are the main focus of the book, the photos also chronicle the impact of the war on working conditions in the yard, most noticeably in the introduction of women in large numbers to the workforce. This book is a vivid portrait of a lost industry at the height of its success.

IAN JOHNSTON is a graphic designer with a lifetimes interest in ships and shipbuilding. He is the author of Clydebank Battlecruisers and The Battleship Builders, co-authored with Ian Buxton.

NORMAN FRIEDMAN is one of Americas most prominent naval analysts and the author of more than thirty books covering a range of naval subjects, from warship histories to contemporary defense issues, including Naval Weapons of World War One, Naval Anti-Aircraft Guns and Gunnery, and British Cruisers.

LEADERSHIP IN WARFrom Lincoln to Churchill

    By Correlli Barnett

In this controversial study, Correlli Barnett examines the strengths and weaknesses of twenty wartime leaders in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He considers the extraordinary difficulties they faced, and analyzes how they performed and what they achieved. Were they successful, or were they beaten down by the burden of their roles? His book focuses on men from very different backgrounds and from three continents in a range of modern conflicts from the American Civil War to the Second World War. In this study, Barnett expands upon his previous work, The Lords of War, to yet again challenge hallowed reputations and rehabilitate the unjustly scapegoated. This latest book confirms his reputation as a master of strategic military history.

CORRELLI BARNETT is one of Britains best-known historians. A fellow of both the Royal Society of Literature and the Royal Historical Society, he has written many acclaimed books, including The Desert Generals, The Swordbearers, The Collapse of British Power, and Engage the Enemy More Closely.

THEY WERE HEROESA Sergeant Majors Tribute to the Combat Marines of Iraq and Afghanistan

By SgtMaj David K. Devaney, USMC (Ret.)

Sergeant Major Devaneys They Were Heroes presents moving portraits of warriors who have not been fully celebrated. His stories recognize the heroism of those who fought in these deadly conflicts and placed their lives at risk to assure the safety of their fellow Marines. For these Marines, no Medal of Honor is enough for their bravery. Nonetheless, though not his main purpose, Devaney calls attention to the practice of awarding medals itself, that often these warriors received awards that were below what their deeds merited. No less disturbing is the revelation that medals were often awarded by rank, and not always by action. The lives presented in Devaneys book call attention to the fact that many heroes of these deadly conflicts have gone unrecognized.

DAVID K. DEVANEY joined the Marine Corps as an infantry rifleman in 1983. After two deployments overseas he was selected to the Surveillance and Target Acquisition (STA) platoon for duty as a scout sniper. He deployed ten times with Marine Corps units and five times with Army Special Forces elements, serving as a sniper. He retired in 2014 as the Command Sergeant Major for Weapons Training Battalion, Quantico, Virginia.

WHITEYThe Story of Rear Admiral E.L. Feightner, a Navy Fighter Ace

    By Peter B. Mersky

Whitey is the first complete biography of one of the last surviving U.S. Navy World War II aces, and one of the Navys most respected officers of any period. Following a typical American, mid-western boyhood, Whitey Feightner was in the vanguard of the huge group of young men thrust into World War II. Upon receiving his commission and his gold wings, he was assigned to a fighter squadron in the Pacific and soon found himself flying with the likes of Jimmy Flatley and Butch OHare, two leaders who imparted their own brand of flying skill and leadership to the young ensign. He flew through many of the wars most hectic and dangerous campaigns, such as Guadalcanal and the Marianas, gaining nine official kills. There were times he should not have returned from a mission, but his own skill and positive outlook helped him make it through all the dangers.

After the war, Whitey became a member of the Regular Navy and was assigned to several of the Navys most secret and action-filled projects at Patuxent River, Maryland. He flew and helped develop legendary fighters like the F7U Cutlass, F9F Banshee, and Cougar as they joined the fleet, as well as the attack aircraft AD Skyraider. He was one of only two men who flew the radical F7U Cutlass in Blue Angels colors.

Returning to the fleet in command of a squadron, and later of an air group, he continued to develop fighter tactics. In between tours at sea, he served in the Pentagon dealing with all the personalities and political turmoil of the time while trying to bring naval aviation into the future. Working with such luminaries as Hyman Rickover and Elmo Zumwalt was not for the feint-hearted, and even Whitey did not come away unscathed. Yet, through it all, he retained the affable demeanor that characterized this rare and highly skilled naval aviator. His life story could serve as a model for any young aviator to follow.

PETER B. MERSKY graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1967 and was commissioned through the Navys Aviation Officer Candidate School in 1968. He served in various assignments on active duty and in the Navy Reserve, retiring as a commander in 1992. He was the editor of Approach and is the long-time book review editor for Naval Aviation News. His reviews also appear regularly in The Hook and Wings of Gold. A resident of Alexandria, Virginia, he has written more than a dozen books, including U.S. Marine Corps Aviation Since 1912: 4th Edition.

SEDUCED BY SECRETSInside the Stasis Spy-Tech World

    By Kristie Macrakis

Seduced by Secrets is an expose of the secret world of one of the most feared spy agencies in history. Revealed, for the first time, are the technical methods and sources of the Stasi (East German Ministry for State Security) as it stole secrets from abroad and spied on its own people. The book draws on classified files from the Stasi archives, including CIA-acquired material, interviews, and court documents to demonstrate that the Stasi overestimated the power of secrets and created an insular spy culture more intent on securing its power than protecting national security. It recreates the Stasis hidden world of spy technology through biographies of agents, defectors, and officers, and by visualizing James Bond-like techniques and gadgets. In this highly original book, Macrakis adds a new dimension to our understanding of the East German Ministry for State Security in espionage history.

A HANDFUL OF BULLETSHow the Murder of Archduke Franz Ferdinand Still Menaces the Peace

    By Harlan K. Ullman

The Great War or the War to end all wars as promised by President Woodrow Wilson was neither great nor ultimately conclusive. Precipitated by the assassination of the Austro-Hungarian Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife in the streets of Sarajevo on June 28, 1914, World War I demolished the order established by the Concert of Vienna, an order that had maintained the peace in Europe for almost a century. The ensuing carnage laid the foundation for World War II and the Cold War that followed.

World War I also left in its catastrophic wake three transformational legacies that remain largely unnoticed today. These legacies have provoked and will continue to provoke massive change to the international order. But containing, mitigating, and preventing these disruptions from exploding into major crises will prove no less difficult a challenge than did restraining the forces that ignited the chaos and violence of the last century.

These legacies would make Osama bin Laden into a modern day version of Gavrilo Princip, the Archdukes assassin, and turn September 11, 2001 into an event like that one on June 28, 1914, in many different and frightening ways. Instead of using a Beretta 9 mm pistol, bin Laden crashed three airliners into New Yorks Twin Towers and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., starting a global war on terror.

Unfortunately, Americas current strategic mindset to deal with the twenty-first century remains firmly anchored in the previous century. That mindset must change if aspirations for peace and prosperity are to be met with decisive and effective actions. Ullman offers provocative and challenging arguments to conventional wisdomthat we fail to understand the challenges and dangers and lack a mindset to cope with these twenty-first-century realities. He argues that while the dangers are not as destructive as a world war, unless they are addressed, at best the standard of living and expectations of Americans will decline, and at worst, the world will become more violent, unpredictable, and chaotic.

HARLAN K. ULLMAN is a strategic thinker and innovator whose career spans the worlds of business and government. Chairman of several companies and an advisor to the heads of major corporations and governments, he was the principal author of Shock and Awe. A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, he served in combat in assignments in Vietnam. He holds an MA, MALD, and PhD from The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University and lives in Washington, D.C.

BRITISH AND COMMONWEALTH WARSHIP CAMOUFLAGE OF WWIIDestroyers, Frigates, Sloops, Escorts, Minesweepers, Submarines, Coastal Forces and Auxiliaries

    By Malcolm George Wright

During World War II, navies developed low-visibility camouflage for their ships on both vertical and horizontal surfaces. The result reduced visibility by blending in with the sea or confusing the identity of a ship by applying more obtrusive patterns. In this new book by maritime artist Malcolm Wright, both the official and unofficial paint schemes that adorned ships of the Royal Navy and Commonwealth are depicted in detail, along with discussion on changes of armament and electronics that effected the outward appearance of each ship. Starting with destroyers from World War I still in service during World War II, the book progressively covers ships below cruisers, class by class, to provide a detailed and easy-to-use guide to paint schemes in use.

TORPEDOThe Complete History of the Worlds Most Revolutionary Weapon

    By Roger Branfill-Cook

The torpedo was the greatest single game-changer in the history of naval warfare. For the first time it allowed a small, cheap torpedo-firing vesseland by extension a small, minor navyto threaten the largest and most powerful warships afloat. The traditional concept of seapower, based on huge fleets of expensive capital ships, required radical rethinking because of this important naval weapon. This book is a broad-ranging international history of the weapon, tracing not only its origins and technical progress down to the present day, but also its massive impact on all subsequent naval wars.

Torpedo contains much new technical information that has come to light over the past thirty years and covers all of the improved capabilities of the weapon. Heavily illustrated with photos and technical drawings this is a book no enthusiast or historian can afford to miss.

    A COMMON VIRTUEA Novel

    By James A. Hawkins

Becoming a man is difficulteven in the best of circumstancesbut when it must be done in 1968 with the Year of the Monkey set to explode onto the cities and battlefields of a war-torn Vietnam, it is only the very best who make the grade.

A Common Virtue has the immediacy and punch of todays fears as it draws on yesterdays headlines. When the armies of Ho Chi Mihn push across the demilitarized zone on a scale never thought possible and simultaneously strike at hundreds of targets, American Marines are at the forefrontdependent on information from a special reconnaissance force that is the only thing that can stop Hanoi from using a New Years opportunity to seize the country.

Unfolding against this background is the story of Marine Paul Jackson, the sole survivor of a hillside massacre. A sniper and reconnaissance innovator, his epic march through the annals of the horrific bureaucracy that is the U.S. military in 1968 is the heart of this story. As an eighteen-year-old Marine he learns at an early age what he must do to survive; what he must do to excel; and what he must do to fit into the most exclusive military fraternity in the world.

A Common Virtue is about the other half of heroism, the part that pits a warrior against an American public that despises his uniform, against internal factions that brand him a coward, and against a beautiful woman who wants nothing more than for him to stay home and love her. It is about growing into manhood in a toxic America and a world gone mad. Tough choices, painful experiences, and an instinct for survival work to create a leader of legend. Exciting, historical, and far reaching, A Common Virtue is an ambitious and explosive creation; one that could only have been written by one who was there.

JAMES A. HAWKINS spent more than eleven years as a U.S. Marine and is a veteran of the Vietnam War. Since returning to civilian life, he has become an international educator, author, and business executive whose career has spanned more than three decades and has brought cutting-edge training technology to more than one hundred international countries. He is the chairman and chief executive officer of The Autumn Group, LLC, a humanitarian and ecologically-sensitive land development company located in Honolulu, Hawaii. An established author, A Common Virtue is his first novel. Authors royalties will be donated to the Wounded Warrior Project.

The U.S. Naval Institute Wheel Book SeriesIn the U.S. Navy, Wheel Books were once found in the uniform pockets of every junior and many senior petty officers. Each small notebook was unique to the Sailor carrying it, but all had in common a collection of data and wisdom that the individual deemed useful in the effective execution of his or her duties. Often used as a substitute for experience among neophytes and as a portable library of reference information for more experienced personnel, those weathered pages contained everything from the time of the next tide, to leadership hints from a respected chief petty officer, to the color coding of the phone-and-distance line used in underway replenishments.

In that same tradition, the new Naval Institute Wheel Books will provide supplemental information, pragmatic advice, and cogent analysis on topics important to all naval professionals. Drawn from the U.S. Naval Institutes vast archives, the series will combine articles from the Institutes flagship publication Proceedings, selections from the oral history collection and from Naval Institute Press books to create unique guides on a wide array of fundamental professional subjects.

The U.S. Naval Institute on NAVAL STRATEGY

    Edited by Thomas J. Cutler

Strategy is described by the Dictionary of Modern Strategy and Tactics as having a permanent nature, but an ever-changing character. For more than a century, both the nature and the character of this essential discipline have been explored in depth by contributors to the Naval Institutes magazines, books, and oral histories. Drawing from those powerful resources, this collection makes clear why naval strategy has always straddled the boundaries between art and science and why its study and employment are essential components of the sea service profession.

The U.S. Naval Institute on NAVAL COMMAND

    Edited by Thomas J. Cutler

Command is the pinnacle of leadership in a military organization. Navy regulations define both the authority and the responsibility of command as absolute. This Naval Institute Wheel Book provides practical guidance and advice that actual and would-be commanders can use to carry out that absolute authority. Included in this carefully selected collection is the experience of those who have commanded as well as the expectations of those who are commanded. Aspirants as well as practitioners will do well to exploit this selected survey of what Fleet Adm. Chester Nimitz described as the one purpose for entering the Navy.

The U.S. Naval Institute on NAVAL TACTICS

Edited by CAPT Wayne P. Hughes, USN (Ret.)

Naval tactics were described by Vice Adm. A.K. Cebrowski, a brilliant thinker on the subject of naval warfare, as the sum of the art and science of the actual application of combat power. Renowned naval tactician Capt. Wayne Hughes called the study of naval tactics as striving to bring whatever order and understanding is possible out of the chaos of battle. With those words of wisdom serving as the commanders intent, this collection sheds a bright light on this sometimes dark and mysterious but unquestionably essential realm, illuminating the principles and concepts of tactics that serve the warrior at the most critical moments.

The U.S. Naval Institute on NAVAL LEADERSHIP

    Edited by Thomas J. Cutler

Leadership is vital to any highly functioning organization. The Naval Institute has devoted countless pages of its publications to the subject of naval leadership, providing start-up guidance to neophytes, giving voice to the accumulated wisdom and experience of those who have led, and serving as a forum in search of answers to the many questions that have always been a part of this vital but sometimes elusive practice. In the pages of this book are some of the most outstanding examples of this wealth of knowledge, gathered for use by both would-be and seasoned leaders in the never-ending quest for strong and effective leadership.

THOMAS J. CUTLER has been serving the U.S. Navy in various capacities for nearly fifty years. The author of many articles and books, including several editions of The Bluejackets Manual and A Sailors History of the U.S. Navy, he is currently the director of professional publishing at the Naval Institute Press and Fleet Professor of Strategy and Policy with the Naval War College. He has received the William P. Clements Award for Excellence in Education as military teacher of the year at the U.S. Naval Academy, the Alfred Thayer Mahan Award for Naval Literature, the U.S. Maritime Literature Award, and the Naval Institute Press Author of the Year Award.

GUARDING HITLERThe Secret World of the Fhrer

    By Mark Felton

Guarding Hitler provides an inside look at the secret world of Adolf Hitlers security and domestic arrangements. Using new and rare research material, some only declassified in 2010, the book draws on intelligence documents, personal testimonies, memoirs, and official histories to provide a fascinating inside look into Hitlers world. In particular, the book focuses on both the official and private life of Hitler during the latter part of the war, at the Wolf s Lair at Rastenburg and at Berchtesgaden, offering fresh insights into the life and routine of the Fhrer, and most importantly the often indiscreet opinions, observations, and activities of the people who surrounded Hitler. Guarding Hitler allows the reader to delve deeper into this previously overlooked but nonetheless fascinating aspect of the worlds most infamous man.
