Learning in Year 1 Year 1 are coming to the end of reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl. On Friday the children came back from lunch to find a special chocolate bar in their classroom! When they opened it they each found a Golden Ticket! Half of the Year 1 children went to Theatre Royal on Drury lane yesterday to watch a matinee performance of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Oscar in 1FH said ‘This is the best day of my life!’ and Elise said ‘I can’t contain myself I think I’m going to explode.’ The children all had a fantastic time and were amazed to see their favourite characters live on stage. Thank you to all the Year 1 parents for their support and for helping to keep the event a surprise. We look forward to the second half of the children attending the show on Wednesday!

Learning in Year 3 In Year 3 we have been learning about all things Mediterranean! Did you know that the Mediterranean Sea borders three continents? We considered the

Important dates:

Year 6 Production, Tuesday 12th July at 1.45pm and Thursday 14th July at 7.00pm

Year 6 Leavers Disco, Monday 18th July, 6.30pm-9.00pm

Summer Term Ends, Tuesday 19th July at 1.30pm

Music Events

Year 3 Concert to parents, Tuesday 12th July 9.10am-10.00am

advantages and disadvantages of living near the Mediterranean Sea – although the weather is better suited to an outdoor lifestyle we thought there might be more mosquitoes! We converted Lira, Euro, Shekel and Kuna to British pounds and had a go at writing our names in Greek, Hebrew and Arabic. Can you guess what this Greek word says? We watched some Greek dancing (see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gFpwA33JylE ) and have made up Greek dances of our own to the tune of ‘Zorba the Greek’.

Learning in Year 5 Our contribution to the newsletter this week has been written by Gabriella in 5La. We have been reading ‘The Adventures of Odysseus’ as our power of reading text which is

about the Ancient Greek myths and Odysseus. On Monday we wrote news reports on Odysseus’s return back home. The author used lots of effective language so we were able to add quite a few words to our ‘magpie wall’ such as ‘transfixed’ and ‘shrouded’. We are yet to read the end and are all very excited for the end since last week Mrs Langley and Miss Lamb left us with a cliff-hanger! I personally think that there will be happy ending with Odysseus and his wife living happily ever after.

Attendance & Success High attendance: more successful children. We set high standards for attendance and punctuali-

ty. Our target for attendance is 97%+. Good attendance is strongly linked to pupil achievement.

What time should my child be in class by each day? The bell is rung at 8.45 in the morning to allow children to start coming in to school as part of our ‘soft start’ in to school in the morning. Children in Year 3, 4 5 and 6 need to be in class for registration by 8.55am. Arriving after 8.55am means a child is late. For children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 registra-tion closes at 9.00am. Arriving after 9.00am means a child is late.

* This is defined as the total number of minutes lateness of children within the class Whole School Attendance for this week is 95.5% Whole School Attendance to date for the whole school is 95.7%

This is most probable because after everything Odysseus has been through, I think he deserves a happy ending.

Fun Run On Monday 4th July we all had a really exciting day taking part in a fun run for ‘Save the Children - Syria Crisis Appeal.' All of the children put their all into their fun run, and made Nelson really proud with their perseverance to run as many laps as possible. Many of the children decided to dress up as part of the pledge and wore some very colourful outfits!

Thanks you to all the parents who attended to support and join in with their children!

Please can all sponsorship money be handed in to class teachers by Tuesday 12th July in the brown envelopes provided, with the total raised clearly written on the

envelope.

Our Values Happiness In July we are focusing on understanding the

importance of Happiness.

Happiness is being happy with yourself Happiness is having a positive attitude Happiness is being cheerful and willing to help

New Nelson Breakfast Club Following positive parental feedback in the annual questionnaire regarding a Nelson breakfast club, we are pleased to announce that in September 2016 we will be launching a Breakfast Club at Nelson. It will provide breakfast and care for Nelson children from Reception to Year 6 from 7.45am to school start time each day. It will provide safe and creative play and care for children before the school day begins. It will be open on all school days and will be located in the school gym. We are now accepting applications, which will be dealt with on a ‘first come, first served’ basis. Further details are available from the school office and on our website.

Nelson Nursery As parents know, we will be opening our new Nursery in September. Children born between 1 September 2012 and 31 August 2013 will be eligible to start at the nursery in September 2016. We still have a few places available, and so if you know someone who might be interested, please contact the school office for more details.

The school car park Sadly we have had a number of issues with parents bringing their cars into the school car park and driving in a dangerous manner, putting the safety of children at risk. In the past we have said that parents can use the car park only after 4pm, but regrettably we are now going to have to implement a policy where parents may not bring their cars into the school car park at any time – neither to park, nor to drop children off. We have to implement this policy in the interests of child safety. Please ensure that you comply with this, and that you do not risk the safety of Nelson children.
