HOW TO PREVENT SHOPLIFTING DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON

With the holiday season quickly

approaching, the art of shoplifting tends

to be on the rise. There is a wide variety

of techniques used, so we will touch on

a few of the more common tactics in an

effort to increase your store security.

A common technique used by two or

more shoplifters is to distract the clerk.

While one individual keeps the clerk busy,

the other is busy stealing items. It is best

to have two or more employees on hand

at all times.

Customers carrying large open bags,

wearing baggy clothing, and having large

purses with them can easily pick up an

item and simply drop it right into the open

container or pocket. You may want to

consider having these persons check

their bags upon entering your store.

Some thieves are more brazen, they will

quickly walk into a store, grab as much as

they can off a rack, and run right back out.

A good practice is to keep the more

expensive items at the rear of the store

where they can’t be easily reached.

Always be careful of umbrellas, newspapers,

baby strollers, and anything else the

customer may have with them that can

be used to conceal merchandise.

Greet customers as they enter the store,

shop-lifters don’t like attention and keep

watch over the customer carefully as they

shop throughout. Continue to periodically

offer them assistance so they know that

you are always watching.

Merry Christmas and have a great

shopping season!
