Understanding FeesHow are courses funded?Courses at New Directions are partly funded by the UK Government via the Skills Funding Agency (SFA) and partly by the learner. Courses that lead to a qualification are generally subsidised by up to 50% by the SFA (co-funded). The European Social Fund also contributes funds to some employment courses.
Learners studying for a Level 3 or Level 4 Certificate or Diploma who are aged 19 years or older will be eligible for an Advanced Learner Loan to pay for part or all of their fees. (For further information on Advanced Learner Loans please see page 11).
The following learners may be eligible for 100% funding from the SFA (fully funded course):
• If you are aged between 19 and 23 and do not yet have a Full Level 2 or Full Level 3 qualification (equivalent to 5 GCSEs at grades A*- C and 2 x ‘A’ Levels respectively) and wish to study towards one. (Please contact us for further information).
• Unemployed learners who are studying to help gain employment or a qualification and are on Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA), Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) and in the work-related activity group (WRAG).
• Learners who receive Universal Credit, earn less than 16 times the applicable National Minimum Wage per week, and are determined by Jobcentre Plus (JCP) as being in one of the following groups :- all Work-Related Requirements Group, Work Preparation Group and Work-Focused Interview Group
• Learners who receive other state benefits, earn less than 16 times the applicable Na-tional Minimum Wage per week, and the subject they wish to study would be directly relevant to their future employment prospects. (For the 2016-2017 academic year learners in this group will need to meet with one of our employment advisors to complete the relevant fee remission declaration)
Helping you with feesIf you are not eligible for full funding, financial assistance may be available to help cover course costs, material costs and help with the cost of childcare. Financial help is available for customers who meet the eligibility requirements of our funders. Submitting an application does not guarantee that you will receive support and the scale of support may vary.

Have you heard about the Advanced Learner Loan? If you’re starting a course on or after 1 August 2016 you might qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan. These loans are government funded to help you to pay the tuition fees charged by colleges and training organisations. Most learners aged 19 and over, studying at Level 3 to 6, will qualify for these loans from the UK Government. It’s easy to apply for, doesn’t take your household income into account and doesn’t involve a credit check. You can apply for a loan from May 2016 for courses starting between 1 August 2016 and 31 July 2017.
To qualify you must be:
• Aged 19 or over on the first day of your course (there’s no upper age-limit) and starting your course on or after 1 August 2016
• Living in the UK on the first day of your course and have lived in the UK, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man for three years immediately before this.
• Studying with a college or training organisation in England approved for public funding. • Enrolling on an eligible course at Level 3 to Level 6 which includes: A Levels, Access to
HE Diplomas, other Diplomas and Certificates, Advanced Apprenticeships or Higher Apprenticeships.
Key facts about the loan:
• Repayments are linked to what you earn and not how much you borrowed.• You only have to start making repayments when you’ve finished your course and you’re
earning over £21,000 a year (which is £404 a week or £1750 a month). Until then you don’t need to pay back anything, but you can make voluntary repayments at any time.
• You pay 9% of the money you earn over £21,000, before tax. For example, if you earn £22,000 a year, your monthly repayment will be £7 a month; and if you earn £35,000 a year, it will be £105 per month.

Learner Support
We are committed to providing an inclusive learning environment and aim to make the most of every student’s learning opportunities. It is important to us that students with disabilities and learning difficulties feel welcome and are supported throughout their time at New Directions. All additional support is based on individual need and assessment of how we can best help.
Examples of the types of support:
• Hearing loops and communication support for deaf students• Personalised resources for students who are blind or visually impaired• Individual help from a Learner Support Worker • Help from a Learner Volunteer • Help for dyslexic students• Individual support for students with mental illnesses
• Specialised hardware in IT classes to help learners with sensory or physical needs such as adapted keyboards, specialised mouse or joysticks, armrests or footrests.
VolunteeringVolunteering is a great way to get involved and gain useful experience and skills. New Directions runs a busy volunteer programme where volunteers give invaluable support to the learners on a wide range of courses including Maths, English, ESOL, IT and Community Learning.
We are looking for more volunteers to join our team and work alongside our professional tutors to give extra help to learners to enable them to achieve their potential.
All volunteers will be able to complete a City and Guilds level 1 volunteering course to enhance their skills and maximise the benefits they bring to the learners.

We offer 3 types of qualification:
• GCSE Maths Foundation Tier and GCSE English are recognised as a full Level 2 qualification, a requirement to access many further and higher learning courses. You will be assessed by formal examination in May/June 2017.
• Functional Skills are qualifications in English and Maths that equip learners with the practical skills needed to live learn and work successfully. They are qualifications available across five levels (Entry 1, Entry 2, Entry 3, Level 1 and Level 2) which help develop your English and Maths skills. You may be assessed by formal or informal assessments. Functional Skills qualifications are key stepping stones in preparing for GCSE qualifications.
• English and Maths Progression Awards are bite-sized units that focus on specific skills you want to develop. These Progression Awards are a collection of units and qualifications designed to support your learning in a flexible and personalised manner. Award in Responsible Alcohol Retailing (ARAR)
The BIIAB Level 1 Award in Responsible Alcohol Retailing is the recognised qualification for front-line staff working on licensed premises, who are authorised to sell alcohol. In order to sell alcohol in England & Wales individuals must either be a Personal License Holder or Authorised by a Personal License Holder.
For a Personal License Holder to authorise someone to sell alcohol on their behalf, they must train that person to a suitable Level. Training records must demonstrate that they understand the legal implications of the sale of alcohol, have the knowledge to promote the licensing objectives and recognise their individual duty to sell alcohol responsibly.
The BIIAB Level 1 Award in Responsible Alcohol Retailing is a nationally recognised qualification which demonstrates that a suitable Level of training has been achieved.
The ARAR qualification also affords some protection to the personal license holder, designated premises supervisor (DPS) and premises license holders by strengthening the defence of due diligence in relation to the actions of their employees; where future prosecutions or a premises license review may affect continued operations and / or result in significant financial penalties. The course is delivered by Reading Borough Council’s Senior Trading Standards officer.
