My journey at Blackburn College started when I enrolled to retake my English GCSE. From there I started an evening life drawing class and moved on to a Computer Aided Design course. Since then I’ve been encouraged to complete my degree in Graphic Design and have recently been back again to complete my PGCE. From an evening only GCSE English course I’ve been able to become a qualified teacher – and I’ve done this whilst working full-time throughout. It’s been a long process but I’m now securing my first supply teaching roles at a range of local schools. My income has improved and I’m starting to do something I love. Blackburn College is the largest provider of adult education in Pennine Lancashire with fantastic success rates, great facilities and they understand the needs of adult students. I can guarantee they’ll have a course that will be right for you. This guide is to show adult students how easy it is to get back into education so you can start a journey just like me. Whether you are looking for a new career, want to improve your job prospects or try something new, there are many options available.

Meet Emily

Keen designer Emily didn’t think there was any way she could afford to get back into education – until she talked to Blackburn College. Single mother of two Emily, who moved from Africa 10 years ago, was advised about the Learner Support Fund which helped her pay for childcare, books, equipment and even food.

“Getting back into education was so much easier than I originally thought. Without the Advanced Learning Loan and the childcare support the College helped me with, there is no way I would be where I am today. I can now concentrate on progressing to university to continue my dream of being a set designer for TV and catwalks.”

Meet Chris...Part time carer and father of two Chris always wanted to go back to college, but didn’t think it was possible as the fees were too high. It wasn’t until Chris enquired about course fees that he realised a 24+ Advanced Learner Loan would solve this problem.

“The Hub gave me advice about the Advanced Learner Loan and all the extra financial support available. It is rewarding to know that I’m making the right steps into a future career and I have not had to pay any up front costs. In fact I was amazed at how much extra financial support I was entitled to.”

Frequently asked questions

What courses are covered by the Advanced Learning Loan?

All eligible Level 3 & 4 Vocational courses and Access to Higher Education Diplomas.

How much will it cost if I do an Access to Higher Education Diploma and then go straight on to a degree level course?

Student Finance England will ‘write off’ any outstanding 24+ Advanced Learning Loans you owe for an Access to Higher Education course once you complete a higher education course. This means you dont have to repay it.

When can I apply for my Advanced Learning Loan?

As soon as you have completed your application form. If you need help call our Finance Team on 01254 29 29 26 or you can apply online at

www.studentfinance.direct.gov.uk

How much will my loan be for?

This will depend on the course you choose and the tuition fees charged by the College. Please feel free to call our Student Finance Team on 01254 29 29 26 if you have any questions.

You can take out a loan for the maximum amount of your tuition fee or you can pay all or part of the tuition fee yourself. There is no loan to cover living or maintenance expenses. There are no upfront payments required.

Can I take out more than one loan and do a number of courses to increase my job prospects?

Yes. Once you have completed your course you will be eligible to apply for more 24+ Advanced Learning Loans to help you progress in your studies. You can apply for up to a total of four loans across a range of subjects.

Who will pay my tuition fees?

Student Finance England (SFE) will pay your tuition fees to College once the course has started and we have confirmed your attendance. No loan payments will be made by them to us until you have attended the course for at least two weeks.

When will I start re-paying my loan?

You will only start to repay your loan from April 2016 and only when your annual income exceeds £21,000 per year. Interest on the loan will be lower than anything available on the high street and is linked to inflation. See the table below to see how much you would repay.

Kevin who returned to educationArt lover Kevin cannot thank the financial team at Blackburn College enough for helping him take the next step towards his dream of working in an art department. Until Kevin had spoken to The Hub, he didn’t think he could return to education. He was advised by the finance team on how the 24+ loan would help towards his tuition, as well as how he wouldn’t have to pay it back until he earned over £21,000 a year.

“Without the financial support given by College, I wouldn’t have been able to start the course. As things are tight at home, Blackburn College made me realise that a new career was possible, and the advice and guidance given by the College was really helpful.”

Access to Higher

Education

What will I study?

You will study on this programme for 15 hours per week, completing three subjects.

You will also receive excellent preparation for University level study with our ‘Higher Education Toolkit’ with our study skills module.

The Access to Higher Education Diploma is a modular course which involves you studying a combination of units. You must successfully complete all units in order to be awarded the Diploma.

Entry requirements

As this is a demanding A-level equivalent programme, you should have a minimum of 4 GCSEs at Grade C or above, or equivalent qualifications, including English and Maths.

Applicants who do not have recent experience of study but have relevant work or life experience will be considered on an individual basis and may be invited to interview.

Access Diplomas are excellent preparation for Higher Education, giving you the necessary qualification to apply for a range of courses. You should check with individual universities to ensure they accept Access Diplomas for entry to their courses.

Meet TraceyTracey Rigg, 43, of Clitheroe, started at the College as a mature student on an Access to Higher Education Diploma in Social Work, with her sights firmly set on becoming a Probation Officer. She then progressed to a BA (Hons) in Criminology, and since graduating, she has now been selected for the graduate probation scheme, and was one of 300 people across the UK who were accepted from 8,000 applications. “When I started it was my intention to become a Probation Officer. After five years of hard work I can finally say that I have realised my dream.” Tracey is now teaching Crime and Consequences to pupils at Ribblesdale High School two days a week, and she also spent three years volunteering for the Accrington Youth Offending Team. She is due to start work as a Probation Officer in January.

Progression

The Access to Higher Education Diploma is widely recognised by UK universities, and many actively encourage applications from Access to HE students.

Nationally, each year, around 20,000 Access to HE students apply for a degree course at a UK university. They go on to study a wide range of subjects, including law, education, and business.

Meet Catherine...Catherine graduated with a 2:1 BA (Hons) Education Studies degree and is now Head of Brand Development at Peter Jackson’s jewellers.

“One day my partner, who was at UCBC, told me to have a look at the courses and I saw one I wanted to do. The course was hard as the one day a week I was in UCBC was a long day and I was still working five days a week.

My qualification has helped me to move up to a different role. I remember feeling nervous about coming back to education and all my friends already had degrees - I really shoudn’t have worried.”

Catherine HarringtonBA (Hons) Education Studies

“One day you wake up and you just think, it’s now or never. It’s time for something different. Something more.”

Blackburn’s Safina Sajid had spent the last year 10 years working as a driving instructor – but all it did was fuel her driving ambition to do something else.

“I was at a stage in my life where I thought I had everything: a family, business, a nice house and still felt I could improve myself and my lifestyle.”

Now, she’s one of many students whose future looks different. In autumn 2014, armed with her First Class Honours degree in Fine Art, she packed her bags (not to mention a substantial back-catalogue of artwork) and is realising her dreams – exhibiting her artwork to the masses in Dubai.

Now exhibiting on an international stage, she looks back on her time at Blackburn.

“The tutor was incredible, I had made so many brilliant friends and every week we did an amazing project.”

“I assumed I couldn’t enrol onto a degree course as I had only GCSEs and no A levels or any other qualifications. I was advised as I was a mature student I had life experience and could enrol on to a degree course, which was a great surprise. I had never known that I could one day be holding a degree!”

I’ve realised my dream...

Cara WilliamsFoundation Degree in Disability Studies (Inclusive Practice)

On helping her employment prospects…

“I am now in my first year and am loving it. I have a student placement within a Primary School with children who have additional needs. My foundation degree improves my employment prospects and allows me to gain hands on experience whilst gaining a qualification. I intend to progress on to my Top Up degree and teacher training course.”

Karen CasperInternational Textile DesignerBA (Hons) Contemporary Textiles

On her greatest achievements…

“I don’t consider myself academic in the slightest, so with determination and passion gaining a First Class Honours degree was a massive achievement, and on the practical side being acknowledged internationally for my textile work.”

Iain HargreavesFoundation Degree in Public Service Management

On moving on…

“I was the train station supervisor at Lancaster station and I loved my job but needed to become a full time carer for my parents who are in their 80s. The problem is though, when caring for the elderly, your pace of life slows down and I felt I was stagnating. My daughter was telling me about the course and I said it sounded easy. She told me to ‘put my money where my mouth is’ so I signed up!”

Specialist Professional courses help you gain the qualifications required to practice at a high level in certain jobs or professions.

Siobhan was looking into starting a new career in the healthcare industry but needed the industry background to go along with her management experience. She therefore started the AMSPAR Level 5 Diploma in Primary Care and Health Management.

Siobhan, who travelled from Stockport for the course, is now a Practice Manager in a GP’s surgery, where she manages the staff, rotas, complaints and day to day running of the surgery.

“One of the best things about the course was the networking opportunities that allowed me to use other peoples’ experiences to influence good practice.

“The staff on the course were brilliant and very supportive. I would now like to progress within the current role and perhaps one day go into consultancy work.”

I want to change career or improve my chances of promotion at work, so what can I do?

This will depend upon what job you do at the moment and what job you would like to do in the future. You might not even know what opportunities exist for you but might be feeling unchallenged in your role. The solution could be as simple as studying towards a specific qualification or it could be as complex as changing career direction completely. To get information and advice specific to your situation come and see a Careers Adviser.

Can I come to college if I don’t have any other qualifications?

Yes! We have something for everybody, whatever level you are ready to study. Come and see a Careers Adviser to explore options that are right for you.

Will I need to study Maths and English?

Whatever you study, Maths and English skills are important and employers list these amongst the top employability skills they are looking for. Some courses will require you to have qualifications in Maths and English before you can go onto study them, but this is always made clear in the entry

37Want to know more...? 01254 292929 | www.blackburn.ac.uk/adultguide

requirements and it is possible to do these before the course if you don’t already have them.

I think college is for young people and think I’m too old to go back to learning. Am I?

No! You are never too old to learn new skills, especially since many people will now have on average 10 different careers in their lifetime. At Blackburn College many of our classes have a wide-range of people at different ages, learning together. We pride ourselves on providing the support needed to make sure that individuals achieve success.

I just want to get out of the house, meet new people and study for fun, what can I do?

We know that learning for fun can be just as valuable as learning to support opportunities in work, so we have a wide range of courses available. Please see pages 24 - 33.

Will I need to pay for my course?

This depends on your personal circumstances and the type of course you want to study. For more information see our finance section on page 6.
