Mission

President’s MessageBy Ray Homiski

We are all in this together. That is,we in the hobby. I don’t mean only mem-bers of the New Jersey Triumph Associa-tion. I extend my meaning to all of ourlike minded British car owners. Ourfriends in the local MG clubs, Austin Hea-ley & Jaguar clubs and any others outthere.

To that end, I extend an open handto share our efforts in both publicizingtheir events along with our own. I alsohope to have those clubs share our eventinfo with their membership, thus growingour combined size and attendance andkeeping our hobby alive and well.

Now, in keeping with the spirit ofthat offer, on May 2nd of this year ourfriends at the MG club will be holdingtheir annual Britfest in Succasunna, NJ.This is an early event in the calendaryear allowing many of us to do our firstshakedown of our cars for the comingshow year.

One of the things our friends at theMG club do is to hold a food drive at theshow and we as a club should help inthat drive. I want to see if we can reallyhelp by donating canned goods which iswhat they ask for each year. No matter ifyou attend the show or not, you can con-tribute.

At our next scheduled Tuesdayevening club meeting on April 28, we willcollect any canned goods you can bring. We will then take them to the show tosupport their food drive effort.

This is not where our effort ends.Again, this is an open invitation to otherlike minded British car clubs to join our ef-forts to keep the hobby fresh and vibrant.

I typically get contacts from otherclub officers who somehow get copies ofthis newsletter. To me that is great. Thefurther we extend our reach with this news-letter the better. So if you have friends inother clubs, please feel free to send thema copy of this newsletter. I am open to theirresponses and suggestions for otherevents or happenings.

I know I am probably being redun-dant but want to emphasize that we aredoing everything to publicize and promoteour events. We are upgrading our trophiesat events along with giveaways. We putour events on the cover page of this news-letter so you can find them fast. You maywant to print out that first page only andput it somewhere so you never lose sightof them. We repeat them on the eventspage of this newsletter along with otherclubs events. We also put these event de-tails and flyers on our web page.

I frequently get messages and callsthat say a member missed an event be-cause they did not know about it. We areattempting to resolve that and any sugges-tions you can make to improve our perfor-mance here will be appreciated.

Remember, we as British car ownersare in this together, so rather than com-pete for attendees, let’s cooperate andhelp each other have successful events.

What are these cars doing in a Triumph newsletter ?

In this month’s edition of the news-letter I thought we should have somefun. On the cover and in this article youwill see many cars that are not Triumphvehicles, but they are relatives. Con-fused? Look at the photos and read thetext and you will learn how Standard Mo-tors has influenced the auto industry inthe UK over these many years.

Peerless GT The prototype ofthis British-built sports saloon whichwas alloy bodied and initially namedWarwick, was designed by BernieRodger for company founders JohnGordon and James Byrnes.

The car had been renamed thePeerless GT by the time seriesproduction started in 1957. It featured

running gear in a tubularspace frame with de Dion tube rearsuspension clothed in attractivefibreglass 4-seater bodywork. Whilethe car had good performance it wasexpensive to produce and the overall

fit and finish was not as good as that ofsimilarly priced models from mainstreammanufacturers. The Phase II version hadan improved body largely moulded inone piece. A works car was entered inthe 1958 24 Hours of Le Mans finishing16th. Production ceased in 1960 afterabout 325 examples had been produced.

Morgan +4 After World War II Morganhad re-introduced their 4/4 model fittedwith a 1267 cc Standard engine. Thiscontinued in production until 1950 whenit was replaced by the larger Plus 4announced at the 1950 Earl's CourtMotor Show.

The Plus 4 at its introduction wasfitted with a 2088 cc engine based onthat used in the ,installed on a strengthened 4/4, chassiswith a wheelbase lengthened by 4 in

(102 mm). Hydraulic brakes, at first alldrum, were fitted for the first time on aMorgan.

In 1953 a higher performanceversion was announced with the 1991 ccI4 engine as used in the .The radiator grille was now surroundedby a cowl that blended into the bonnet.Front disc brakes became an option in1959 and were standardised in 1960.From 1962 the engine was the

unit, which increased displacementto 2138 cc.

In 1955 the less powerful 4/4model re-appeared in phase II form. The96 in (2,438 mm) wheelbase of the Plus4 was adopted by the 4/4 when itreappeared in 1955, after which the twocars were for most purposes the samelength and width.

The Amphicar Model 770 is an

amphibious automobile, the first suchvehicle mass-produced for sale to thepublic starting in 1961. The Germanvehicle was designed by Hanns Trippeland manufactured by the Quandt Group atLübeck and at Berlin-Borsigwalde. Itsname is a portmanteau of "amphibious"and "car". The Amphicar was designed tobe marketed and sold in the USA.Compared to most boats or cars, itsperformance was modest, and only 4000were produced by 1965. Nevertheless, it isstill among the most successfulamphibious civilian autos of all time, andstill often prized and preserved as noveltycollectible automobiles today.

The powerplant was the 1147 cc (69in³) engine from the British

. Many engines were tried inprototypes but the Triumph engine was"state of the art" in 1961 and had thenecessary combination of performance, weight, cool running and reliability.Updated versions of this engine remainedin production in the until1980. The Amphicar engine had a poweroutput of 43 hp (32 kW) at 4750 rpm, slightly more than the dueto a shorter exhaust. Designated the"Model 770", the Amphicar could achievespeeds of 7 knots in the water and 70 mph(110 km/h) on land. Later versions of theengine displaced 1296 cc and 1493 cc andproduced up to 75 bhp (56 kW).

Some Amphicar owners have fitted theseengines to improve performance.

The Swallow Sidecar Company wasfounded in 1922 by two motorcycleenthusiasts, William Lyons and WilliamWalmsley. leading to SS Cars Ltd. In1935 the SS Jaguar name first appearedon a 2.5-litre saloon, sports models ofwhich were the SS 90 and SS 100.

Jaguar achieved relativecommercial success with their early postwar models; times were also tough forother Coventry-based auto-makers andthe company was able to buy from JohnBlack's theplant where Standard had built the six-cylinder engines it had been supplying toJaguar.

The SS90 was a British sports carfirst built by SS Cars Ltd in Coventry,England in 1935. In 1945 the companychanged its name to Jaguar Cars Ltd.

The car used a six-cylinder side-valve Standard engine of 2663 cc with anoutput of 68 bhp (51 kW). The enginediffered from the one used in the ordinarycars by having Dural connecting rods, analuminium cylinder head with 7:1compression ratio, and twin RAGcarburettors.

The Vale Special (sometimes justVale) was a British sports car madebetween 1932 and 1935 in Maida Vale,London.

The cars were initially handmade andbased oncomponents. The first cars used the 832 ccside-valve engine from the

fitted to a chassis brought in from RuberyOwen, semi-elliptic leaf springs all round, and the hydraulic brakes and axles fromthe Triumph. The top speed was only 65mph (105 km/h).

The Swallow Doretti is a two-seatersports car built on Tube chassis utilizing

,mechanicals, madebetween 1954 and 1955.

The first and only model producedby Swallow under TI ownership was theDoretti, which had a tubular Reynolds531 manganese–molybdenum, medium-carbon steel chassis with a body made ofa steel inner structural skin andaluminium outer. Most cars weresupplied with overdrive and they werecapable of 100 mph.

Bond Equipe 1963 - 1970 - TheEquipe GT was Bond's first four wheelcar, a sports car, with a fibreglass two

door body. Essentially it was achassis cab, complete with

bulkhead, windscreen and doors, with the 1147 cc engine The doors

had slightly revised glass, to accommodatethe fibreglass, fastback roof and rearassembly. The Herald's forward hingingbonnet was replaced with a revised versiongiving an excellent, clean, sportscarappearance. This was replaced by theGT4S model in 1964, offering 4 seats, andan opening boot lid. In front, the beautiful,Italianate bonnet styling was spoiled by theaddition of Reliant Scimitar, quadheadlights, flanking a, cut-down version ofthe original Herald grille. A bonnet scoopwas also added. A 1296cc engine wasintroduced in 1967. During the life of thiscar, it was not uncommon to see

, modified by the fitting of a BondEquipe bonnet, as all the side body linesmatched perfectly. Less common wereBond Equipes, bizarrly, fitted with Heraldfront ends.

The Panther Rio was a motor carmade by British manufacturer PantherWestwinds, usingmechanicals. According to the company,it differed from the family saloon-classDolomite, in being finished to "Rolls-Royce standards". Only 38 were builtbetween 1975 and 1977.[1] A rarer RioEspecial used the high-performance

as its basis.

The wasselected for improvement, due in part tothe vehicle's combination of advancedengines and upright driving position, which offered a blend of modern andtraditional luxuries. The Panther Rio wasthe result, and was launched inSeptember 1975.

Fairthorpe Ltd was founded by AirVice Marshal Donald Bennett. The firstcars were lightweight models powered bymotorcycle engines and with glass fibrebodies called the Atom and Atomota. In1956 a new larger car, the open 2-seatElectron appeared using a CoventryClimax engine. A reduced price version

using a engine followed in 1957and was the mainstay of production until1973 with about 700 being built.

The Lotus Seven is a small, simple, lightweight two-seater open-top sports carproduced by Lotus Cars (initially calledLotus Engineering) between 1957 and1972.

It was designed by Lotus founderColin Chapman and has been consideredthe embodiment of the Lotus philosophy ofperformance through low weight andsimplicity. The original model was highlysuccessful with more than 2,500 cars sold, due to its attraction as a road legal car thatcould be used for clubman racing.[4]

(1960–68) the Series 2 had many parts.

The SAAB 99 is a European-manufactured compact executive carproduced by SAAB from 1968[2] to 1984.

Although SAAB engineers liked thetwo-stroke engine it was decided that afour-stroke engine was necessary andthe choice was a 1.75 L (later 1.85 L)engine from , the same TriumphSlant-4 engine used in the

, but the SAAB version wasfitted with a Zenith-Stromberg CDcarburetor developed specially for SAAB.Forty-eight SAAB 99s were equippedwith a Triumph Stag V8, but the idea touse a V8 was later dropped in favour of aturbocharged engine.

Daimler SP250

The original version, later called theA-spec, could reach a speed of 120 mph(193 km/h), but the chassis, a “14-gaugeladder frame with cruciform bracing” basedon the , flexed so much thatdoors occasionally came open, marring itsreputation. Bumpers were originally anoptional extra. With the basic specificationnot including full bumpers, the A-spec. carshave two short, chromium-plated 'whiskers'on the body on either side of the front grilleand two short, vertical bumpers, or"overriders" at the rear, which were notincluded if the rear bumper was optioned.Early A-spec. cars had recesses behind thedoor handles, but these were phased out.

The manual gearbox, the first of thetype used by Daimler since they startedusing the pre-selector type across theirrange in the 1930s, was reverse-engineered from the gearboxused in the

To meet US federal regulations, largeblack plastic bumpers (usually calledrubber bumpers, despite not actually beingrubber) were added to the front and rearand the ride height was increased. Theincreased ride height affected handling, and an anti-roll bar was added to help withhigher centre of gravity. The A-Seriesengine was replaced by the 1493 cc unitfrom the and a modifiedMorris Marina gearbox with synchromeshon all four gears.

So you see the Standard Motors Tri-umph cars have made their way into somenotable and not so notable cars. It is prettymuch a testament to their quality comparedto their peers.

I often like to think of my little ole’ Tri-umph as an exotic car. At least I know thatother manufacturers thought enough of themarque to use it as a basis or at least acomponent supplier for their cars.

What’s New?

1969 GT6+ garnered 42 bids on thesame auction site as the above car. It

sold for $15,865. Again contrast that withthe above car. Admittedly there was adifference in quality and appearance. I

just wonder was it $13,214 better?

I saw this car in person and was of-fered the

chance to pur-chase it if I re-call at $1800.It sold on auc-

tion for $6,289. Go figure!

1959 TR10 Triumph Estate Wagon. Itsold on auction for $10,500 and was in

excellent condition. I am sort of partial tothese. Someday one might make it way

into my garage.

1969 GT6 Mk 2 was put up on auction andonly achieved a final bid of $2,651 after 16

bids but did not sell. Check out the itembelow for some contrast.

We will meet near the Dunkin’ Do-nuts in the Copper Tree Mall lot at 350Ramapo Valley Road in Oakland for an

8:30 AM departure. We will be able to pullover en masse along the way or enter aparking lot via a packed-dirt road near theAppalachian Trail to stretch our legs onthe first part of the trip. We’ll cross out of the wilderness aswe continue on toward the Manor and ar-rive around 10:30 where we will have timeto wander throughout the grounds and totour the main house ($3 fee, 1 hour 15minutes and well worth the time). We’llregroup and head out on our second legat about 12:30 to arrive at Trovato’s Dueat 1:15 for lunch.

For several years we have had adouble decker British bus at our A Touchof England show. The last couple of yearsthe bus has been under restoration. Thereis still some work to be done. Member BillSmith reached out to the owner to see ifhe could help. He came back with a re-quest for assistance. Here is how we canall help.

Brian North owns an old London,double-decker bus which he has broughtto the “A Touch of England” show andother shows in NJ. The bus is always agreat attraction, and Brian has been won-derful in letting people get on, and walkaround inside of it. The kids really love it.Brian has been a good friend to our club.

Brian began a much needed restorationof the bus several years ago, but it stillneeds some additional work. When heresponded to my e-mail about the TOEshow, I offered my services to give him ahand. Brian could use some additionalhands to do some paint stripping, so if wecould encourage some of our members tohelp out, perhaps we can help get it backto TOE this year. Please see the e-mailmessage below.

BTW, Brian and the bus are located inNorthern NJ.

Bill, I’ll probably start back on the bus in2-3 weeks. In all seriousness, if you orsomeone you know is interested in helpingout (mostly stripping fine detail residualpaint), I am WILLING TO PAY !!!!

You can forward my address to anyoneyou feel might be interested.

Thereis an address [email protected] leads you to KasKastner.com whereyou will find a complete description of theevent history and details of this year. TheKastner Cup is on Saturday the 16th.

The host hotel room block has longbeen fully booked but there is a backuphotel that may have rooms. Below is thelatest I have on that from Scott Janzen. Hewas writing to Bob Delucia of the DelawareTriumphs. They are organizing a caravan.

I have been to Winchester recentlyand they have a restored downtown areawith a neat English Pub and other restau-rants.

NOTE that the Friday barbeque is $20 perperson and reservations can be made untilthe first week of May. Orders go [email protected] . There are T-shirtsbut those orders need to be in by April 1.There may be some on sale at the event. Mike

Winchester is about 20 minutesfrom the track, just off I-81. AlthoughCharlestown, WV is a little closer (eastof the track instead of west) it's more ex-pensive because they get the casinocrowd, so that's why we are in Win-chester. Winchester is a nice historictown with some good restaurants.

Racers will begin showing up onWednesday in the late afternoon asthere is a practice day Thursday. Quali-fying starts on Friday, and races, I think, start Friday afternoon and continue intoSunday. Generally, the race groups - thecars are typically divided up into abouteight groups based on age, type and dis-placement - will each be out on tracktwice a day. So, the various Triumphswill run in individual race groups twice aday along with other cars in their class-es, and the additional all-Triumph Kast-ner Cup race will be the last race of theday on Saturday!

There will be a Triumph crowd bar-becue dinner in the paddock on Fridayevening, which you will are welcome tojoin ($20.00/head). Saturday night is thedrivers dinner organized by VRG, so allthe racers will be going to that.

If you were only going to be there for aday, I'd say it should be Saturday. If youwant to make it two days, probably Fri-day and Saturday. By Sunday, cars havebroken and people are packing up assoon as their last race is over and head-ing home. Saturday is really the big raceday (and car show day, keep reading).

There is also a vintage car show inthe field overlooking the track on Saturday -you might wish to display your car there, and I think there will be a big entry of Tri-umphs that aren't racing. This is also thecheapest way to get into the track. As aspectator, by entering the car show you getentry to the track for less than a weekendpass. Historic Bits

I know that I get a bit up-set when another govern-ment regulation comes alongthat impedes upon my driv-ing rights. What I see comingin the way of self driving carsscares me but that is not thetopic for today’s Historic Bits.

If you think governmentregulations are crazy todaythen check what our fathersor grandfathers faced. Itseems that good ole’ FDRand Truman were a bit moreinvasive than you might thinkas the next two articles willindicate. Technical Q & A

A few questions came my way thispast month. If you know the answer thenplease send them to me.

. I have a person trying to find out if thereis a difference between a TR7 and TR8carbureted or non fuel injected gas tank?If you have the part number, that would begreat also.

Here are a couple of responses I receivedbut I am still looking for a local / economi-cal solution.

Here is one at Victoria Britishhttp://www.victoriabritish.com/features/tr/TRFTE.htm

Another one from a fabricator brought tomy attention by member Joe Ientile.

Finally a recommendation from memberBill Smith to contact The Wedge Shopthat might have a means to secure one.

. I recently received this email from aperson I met some time ago in Colts NeckNJ. He had a late 40s Triumph 1800 thatwas in decent shape but the engine wasremoved and it and other items lay inpieces. He is now thinking of restoring itand is asking for some help regarding theengine specifications. If you can help orhave access to a technical document withthis information contact him using the in-formation below...

Hi Ray,

I hope everyone survived this pastwinter in good cheer. With warmer weath-er coming on my thoughts are again turn-ing to getting the old TDA running again. What I need is a set of liners and pistonsthat fit, and a gasket set.

What I was hoping was that I couldhave my machinist compare the dimen-sions of my liner and piston to other mod-els that may be available . Perhaps if theyare reasonably close in size I can use alater set to get the ball rolling.

Perhaps you might have a memberwho might be willing to lend me the partsfor comparison? I know there may be oth-er differences as well. I would really ap-preciate the help.

Thanks to all,

. We also had a question about how toaffix a license plate to the front of a TR6without drilling out the bumper.

Several members talked of makingtheir own bracket that can be used with-out drilling the bumper. I have not yetseen one but as soon as I do, I will have aphoto in the following newsletter.
