    The Mission

    The Mission of the Governors Office of Volunteerism is to support the growth anddevelopment of volunteerism throughout the state through the promotion,coordination and enhancement of civic engagement.

    The office occupies a particularly important role in state government, serving as astatewide liaison among public, private, local, state and national volunteerprograms.

    The Vision

    Today, the Governors Office of Volunteerism continues to fulfill its critical mission.Advocacy, recognition, communication and technical assistance form the backboneof the office.     The mission of the Commission is to develop a statewide ethos of communityservice and a comprehensive, coordinated program targeted to the needs of New

    Jersey and its unique community challenges. The programs shall provideopportunities for service that bring diverse people together working in a commoncause to get things done in communities, remove barriers, and promote respect.

    The Commission shall guide the AmeriCorps programs and work to infuse service-learning into the primary, secondary, and post-secondary curricula to create future

    What is AmeriCorps?

    AmeriCorps is the national service program that provides people of allages and backgrounds with opportunities to serve their communities in exchange for educational awardsand a modest living allowance. AmeriCorps members help meet the nations critical needs in the areas ofeducation, human needs, public safety, the environment, and homeland security.

    What do AmeriCorps members do?AmeriCorps members work with communities to find solutions to address local needs. While learning newskills, AmeriCorps members share their talents and energy to make a difference in New Jersey. Corpsmembers might: tutor students to help them achieve academic success, aid adults of various disabilitieswith their daily living needs and support them as active members of the community, renovate homes andabandoned buildings for senior citizens and low income families, provide mentoring and safe places forchildren to learn and grow during non-school hours, assist in cleaning waterways and developing

    community gardens, and help communities prepare to respond to disasters or emergencies.

    How much time is involved? What do I receive?Full-time AmeriCorps members perform 1,700 hours of service and upon completion earn an educationaward of $5,350. Full-time AmeriCorps members also receive: a living allowance of $11,800 per year;health insurance; and childcare, if eligible. Part-time members perform 900 hours of service and uponcompletion earn an education award of $2,675.

    Program Description: New Jersey Community Development Corporation (NJCDC) conducts a uniquepartnership with the Paterson Public Schools and a diverse coalition of community organizations toimplement the Paterson Community School Corps (PCSC), a comprehensive initiative offering anevidence-based prevention and support services to children and families in five schools in Paterson. Theprogram design of the PCSC is rooted in the nationally-recognized community schools model, a placeand a set of partnerships that mobilizes an array of community resources, such as after school, youthdevelopment, family support, health and mental health, parenting and adult education, employment,violence prevention, and connects them to student learning and development. Community schoolsrecognize that multiple supports such as physical, emotional, social and academic are required for all

    students to succeed. Schools become centers that also strengthen families and communities.

    The Salvation Army

    Program Description: The Salvation Army Newark Area Services (TSA) members serve clients involvedin the Grand Families Success Center and the Juvenile Justice Delinquency Intervention Through TargetedOutreach program, through the Boys and Girls Club. Members are trained as assistant case workers andmentor, tutor, and lead support groups with clients.

    Program Description: The Bridging the Digital Divide AmeriCorps program helps adult learners improvetheir computer literacy.     New Jersey Coalition against Sexual Assault

    Program Description:The NJCASA AmeriCorps programs 18 members serve at 12 of New Jerseys22 sexual violence programs as well as the NJCASA offices. Members provideoutreach to the local community on sexual violence and are involved withstrategies to prevent sexual violence. Members also recruit and developvolunteers for the sexual violence programs including the 24 hour hotline,

    outreach, and other assistance. Many members also serve as advocates for survivors of sexual violenceand their loved ones, by providing support through the hotlines and through accompaniments to the policestation, hospitals, or court. Through their service, NJCASAs AmeriCorps members gain experience andknowledge around sexual violence. Many members intend to continue in the sexual violence field and theirservice as NJCASA AmeriCorps members provides them with skills and understanding that furthers theirgoals.

    Program Description: Teach For Americas mission is to build the movement to end educational inequityin Newark, Camden, Passaic, and across the nation. We do this by building a corps of highly talentedindividuals who commit to teach for two years in New Jerseys lowest -income communities and whobecome leaders for expanding educational opportunity.     Program Description: The New Jersey Watershed Ambassadors Program is a community-orientedAmeriCorps environmental program designed to raise awareness about watershed issues in New Jersey.Through this program, AmeriCorps members are placed in watershed management areas across the stateto serve their local communities. Watershed Ambassadors monitor the rivers of New Jersey through visualand biological assessments. The members also support or serve with community volunteers and areavailable to train local volunteers in these monitoring techniques. Watershed Ambassadors are alsoavailable to make presentations to community organizations and schools. These interactive presentationsprovide information about water and watershed issues in New Jersey. Members educate students andcitizens about watershed issues and empower them to get involved in their watershed.

    New Jersey Learn and Serve America:School- Based Programs

    The purpose of the Learn and Serve America: School-Based Program (LSA:SBP) is to increasestudent, teacher, and community participation in service-learning projects that integrate school-basedlearning and community service activities into the various curricular areas as a means to implement NewJerseys Core Curriculum Content Standards. Service-learning is a method of teaching and learning thatcombines academic work with service to the community. Through this instructional method, students learnby doing through a clear application of skills and knowledge while helping to meet needs in the school andcommunity. Students are engaged in service to their communities as a means of enhancing theiracademic achievement, applying learning to real-life and work situations, and developing skills for activecitizenship. The Department of State partners with the NJ Department of Education for the Learn andServe America: School Based Program.

    AmeriCorps VISTA is an AmeriCorps program for individuals age 18 and older. AmeriCorps VISTAMembers assist communities in developing their capacity to address local issues. They work toincrease housing opportunities, develop literacy programs, establish credit unions, and improve healthcare in under-served communities. Since 1965, more than 100,000 VISTAs have joined forces with

    12,000 public agenciesand nonprofit groups to help communities across the country.

    Members must be at least 18; there is no upper age limit. Different AmeriCorps VISTA sponsorsrequest members with different qualifications. Some projects require people with college study or abachelors degree. Other projects may emphasize experience or skills rather than formal education.The ability to speak Spanish is especially helpful in certain areas.

    Senior CorpsRetired and Senior Volunteer ProgramsA program of the Corporation of National and Community Service

    Senior Corps connects todays over 55s with the people and organizations that need them most. Wehelp them become mentors, coaches or companions to people in need, or contribute their job skillsand expertise to community projects and organizations. Conceived during John F. Kennedy'spresidency, Senior Corps currently links more than 500,000 Americans to service opportunities. Their

    contributions of skills, knowledge, and experience make a real difference to individuals, nonprofits, andfaith-based and other community organizations throughout the United States.Senior Corps offers several ways to get involved. Volunteers receive guidance and training so theycan make a contribution that suits their talents, interests, and availability.Retired Senior Volunteer Program connects volunteers age 55 and over with service opportunities intheir communities that match their skills and availability. From building houses to immunizing children,from enhancing the capacity of non-profit organizations to improving and protecting the environment,RSVP volunteers put their unique talents to work to make a difference.The Foster Grandparent Program connects volunteers age 60 and over with children and youngpeople with exceptional needs. Volunteers mentor, support, and help some of the most vulnerablechildren in the United States.The Senior Companion Program brings together volunteers age 60 and over with adults in their

    community who have difficulty with the simple tasks of day-to-day living. Companions help out on apersonal level by assisting with shopping and light chores, interacting with doctors, or just making afriendly visit.
