Florence, AZ - The Pinal County Office of Emergency Management has initiated the update of the 2009 Pinal County Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) which was developed in accordance with requirements of the Healthy Forests Restoration Act of 2003. The 2018 CWPP update process re-analyzed communities at risk from wildland fire within Pinal County and establishes a series of recommendations to reduce wildland vegetative fuel ignitability, structural ignitability as well as recommendations for enhancing public outreach and education associated with wildland fire in the urban interface. On Tuesday, May 1, the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management implemented Stage II Fire Restrictions across all Southern Arizona state-owned and managed lands. Restrictions will impact Cochise, Greenlee, Graham, Pima, Pinal, and Santa Cruz counties. On Friday, May 4, DFFM will place Coconino County, south of the Grand Canyon, in Stage II Fire Restrictions also. Under Stage II restrictions, no campfires will be allowed at all. Fireworks and target shooting are never allowed on Arizona state lands. “The Department of Forestry and Fire Management has been prepositioning crews across the state, so we have the ability to provide initial attack faster. With that, we

Restrictions apply to the following state-owned and state-managed lands within the above-mentioned counties including:• All State Trust lands outside incorporated municipalities.• All Game and Fish Commission Wildlife areas and department properties outside incorporated municipalities.• All State Parks outside incorporated municipalities – State Parks will remain open with campfires allowed in developed campgrounds.• All Department of Transportation highway, right-of-way property outside incorporated municipalities, not owned by federal land management agencies.

Restrictions include:• No campfires. Building, maintaining, attending, or using a fire, campfire, charcoal, coal fire, or wood stove, including in developed campgrounds or improved sites is prohibited.• Smoking, except within an enclosed vehicle or building.• No chainsaw use from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.• Discharging a firearm, air rifle or gun gas, unless while engaged in a lawful hunt pursuant to state, federal, or tribal laws and regulations is prohibited.• Fireworks or another incendiary device are prohibited.• Mechanical and industrial prohibitions include, operating any internal combustion engine, welding or operating acetylene or other torch with an open flame, and using an explosive. Exemptions include:• Persons with a written permit that specifically authorizes the otherwise prohibited act. This process can be utilized in cases where public works and public utility emergency repairs are necessary.

Graduation is set for May 25, 2018 – a day that the Class of 2018 has been eagerly awaiting. Since Pre-School, this class has been preparing for graduation day, working each year on their academics, enjoying the friendship of their classmates and taking advantage of all that school has to offer. The top three members of the class shared their hopes for the future for themselves and the community they love. While they are all looking forward to the next phase of life in College, they all admit that “adulting” is starting to weigh heavy on their mind, affording college, bills, managing work and school and saying good bye to the friends and community. Naomi Hing, is the co-Valedictorian. She is the daughter of Michael Hing and August Fay. She has a sister and two brothers. She will be attending Grand Canyon University where she will major in Biology. Her career goal is to become a Physician’s Assistant. She was inspired to enter this career field after her aunt was diagnosed with cancer. She would like to come home and work in the clinic here in town. During high school she was an athlete playing Volleyball, Softball and Tennis. She was involved in Student Council, the Town of Superior Student Leadership Council, DECA and also worked at her family business. Her advice to those starting their high school career: “Make the most of everything, make as many memories and friends that you can. They will last a lifetime.” She has appreciated the opportunity that the school and the community has provided the youth to be involved in the community. “It has taught us a lot of responsibility,” she said. Matthew Hernandez, co-Valedictorian, is the son of Valerie Macias and Alejandro Hernandez. He is the grandson of Tommy and Mary Macias who has helped to raise him. He has two sisters and one brother. Matthew will be attending Grand Canyon University where he will major in Environmental Sciences-Geology. His career goal is to complete his degree and become a geologist with the National Forest Service. He was inspired to become a geologist after taking a college geology course that was offered at Superior High School through CVIT and Resolution Copper. He also says that his family has enjoyed the outdoor activities in Superior and that has inspired him to consider a career with the Forest Service, he wants to further preserve the earth for others. His advice for those beginning their high school career: “Use your high school years to find out who you are as a person.” Matthew shared about his own personal growth through high school and how even the bad things helped him become a stronger person. He has been actively involved

in Tennis, DECA, Student Council, Town of Superior Student Leadership Council and National Honor Society. Victoria Juarez is the class of 2018 Salutatorian. She is the daughter of Angelo and April Juarez. She has three sisters and one brother. Victoria will be attending Glendale Community College this fall where she has been recruited to the softball team. After Glendale Community College she plans to transfer to ASU to complete her degree. She plans to study Forensic Psychology eventually becoming a Psychologist. She was inspired to become a psychologist because she is someone that everyone comes to when they need help and advice and she really enjoys helping people. Her advice to incoming Freshman: “Stay focused, get good grades, make memories and have lots of fun, responsibly.” These top three students, all shared how their families played a critical role in helping them succeed. “Without my grandparents and parents, I am not sure

where I would be without them,” explained Hernandez. “I appreciated all the hardships my parents faced, my Dad has been working out of state but they have always been there for me,” said Juarez. “Thank you, Mom and Dad,” Naomi said. “Thank you for the support and guidance to keep me on the path to success.” The three hope that Superior continues to improve and grow but they hope that it never loses the closeness of the community. “Keep all the good stuff you do for the youth, that always has meant a lot,” said Victoria. All three hope that there will be more programs for students and youth in the future and all suggested something like a YMCA would be good for Superior. These three students will give commencement speeches during the graduation ceremony on Friday, May 25, at 7 p.m. The ceremony is set to be held on the Memorial Football Field.

There is a reason repeat championships are rare in sports. For the sixth-seeded Superior baseball team that reason was No. 1 Bagdad and starting pitcher Israel Loveall. The Sultans took advantage of a couple of errors by the Panthers that led to a five-run first inning, which was more than enough for the left-handed Loveall, who tossed a one-hit complete-game shutout with 11 strikeouts in a 10 – 0 victory to win the 1A Baseball State Championship game at Tempe Diablo Stadium on Monday night. “We came out young and a lot of our guys were in this atmosphere for the first time,” Superior head coach Manuel Ortega said afterwards. “We were very nervous early on and very stiff. That’s what led to those mishaps, just a lack of experience.”

The Panthers entered Monday’s game with a chance to defend the state title it won a year ago in addition to repeating history. In 2007, both the Superior softball and baseball teams won state championships, and after the Pantherettes did their part last Monday night, it was the boys’ turn a week later. Unfortunately, the result was not what the Panthers intended. “Bagdad is the No. 1 team for a reason and with their ace on the mound, he was hard to hit,” Ortega said. “(Loveall) has had a good career and (the Sultans) showed why they’re the best team in 1A.” Junior Gabriel Garcia notched the Panthers’ lone hit, a fifth-inning single.Starting pitcher Kale Major fanned eight and pitched better than the final score would indicate. Garcia, Major and Steven Ybarra are among a roster nary a senior that will return next year, looking to win

another state championship. “We’re coming back reloaded and stocked up,” Ybarra said to the Superior Sun. “Hopefully, we will be back with a spark next year.” This year’s loss could prove to be a benefit down the road. “This experience is going to help,” Ortega said. “I told them to remember this feeling, to eat it, think about, and let it motivate them in the offseason. If we work hard enough, we can be right back here holding up the other trophy.” Despite the loss, the Panthers can find some solace in knowing they made this year’s state champion go through them to win it all. “Our guys fought,” Ortega said. “No one believed in us, but we believed in each other and that’s all that matters. We wanted to get back to this title game because if someone was going to (dethrone) us, they had to do to in this game.”

Carlota Copper Company (Carlota), owner/operator of the Carlota Mine, located approximately 10 miles west of Globe-Miami, Arizona, will start mining a small satellite copper oxide deposit, known as Eder South, on Carlota’s patented claims. The mine will consist of a small open pit (approx. 8.9ha/22ac), one main haul road and several support roads.

The project will start around the time frame of May 15, 2018. Mining of the Eder South deposit will continue for approximately three years. Mining will consist of blasting and hauling of ore with 4-150T haul trucks to the existing lined heap leach pad for copper recovery. Carlota will continue to comply with its existing and approved permits and conditions.

Bowler added, “Each organization that signs up to participate in the water collection/distribution and cooling station system, will provide respite for the weary traveler.” The weary traveler could be a family whose water was disconnected, someone that is homeless and can’t carry enough water with them or an individual stranded on the side of the road or in the desert. According to the Pinal County Health Department study on heat-related illnesses, in 2017, there were six deaths in Pinal County due to heat-related illnesses. Of the nearly 190 cases of emergency room treatment of heat-related illness, 71 percent were men aged 19-49 and those over 65 had an increased chance of dying due to heat-related complications. The elderly were being impacted because they were

afraid to turn on their air conditioners out of fear that their bills were going to outgrow their pocketbook, Bowler said. In the desert water equates life. Last summer, the Genesis Project in Apache Junction distributed 10 cases of water per day, the Casa Grande Salvation Army gave out more than 7,500 water bottles last year to clients in need and the soup kitchen operated by Seeds of Hope and the St. Vincent de Paul also distributed thousands to their clients. The food banks in the area also distribute water with food boxes to those who need them. Without the community donations of water, these agencies would have had to dip into their limited budgets to purchase this lifesaving drink. “Wouldn’t it be great if WE, as a community, could take care of the water?” challenged Bowler. Don’t become a statistic! Don’t be fooled by the temperature. Avoid heat illness by making sure you’re properly hydrated. Arizona officials recommend drinking

at least two liters (about 68 ounces) of water a day — and one to two liters of water an hour if you’re outdoors. They even recommend drinking when you’re not thirsty. Thirst is your body’s way of telling you you’re already mildly dehydrated. Can you be a hero and save someone else?
