Bonnie Summerfield, 78, of Dudleyville, passed away suddenly on Sept. 12, 2020 in Tucson, Arizona surrounded by her loving family. Bonnie was born May 30, 1942 in Nerstrand, Minnesota to James and Helen Kispert. She moved to Arizona at 18 and attended Arizona State University until she met her husband Merlin “Buck” Summerfield II. They wed on July 17, 1961 and were married for 31 years. They had three children together and spent their time traveling and participating in rodeos until Merlin’s passing in 1992. Bonnie later met her second husband, Charles Harmon,

Bonnie Summerfieldto whom she was married to for 20 years. In her later years, Bonnie spent her time attending events for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who always put her family first. Bonnie was loved and will be missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her children, Bret (Tracy) Summerfield, Brian (Laura) Summerfield and Brenda (Robert) Armenta; and siblings, Garry (Dee) Kispert, Betty Kispert and Jack (Gloria) Kispert. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Bonnie was preceded in death by her beloved parents, James and Helen Kispert, and husband, Merlin Summerfield II. A headstone for Bonnie will be placed at the Dudleyville Cemetery in Dudleyville, Arizona, next to Merlin’s headstone. Services will be announced at a later date.

Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center (CVRMC) would like to welcome Dr. Natasha Patel (OB/GYN) and Dr. Patrick Law (Podiatrist) to the community. Dr. Natasha Patel has a vast educational background and has practiced in rural and underserved communities. She obtained her medical degree from the Ross University School of Medicine, Roseau, Dominica. Additionally she has been a Clinical Assistant Instructor for medical student education, an Organic Chemistry Teaching Assistant and has published articles for various medical journals. Her most recent experience includes high risk obstetrics, Level IV NICU, gynecologic surgery, ambulatory and major procedures, and laparoscopic surgery. Dr. Patel enjoys poetry, yoga, hiking, equestrian sports and learning new languages. Her native language is English, however she is fluent in Hindi, Gujarati, and basic medical and conversational Spanish. She looks forward to serving the women of the Cobre Valley region. Dr. Patrick Law received his training in foot and ankle surgery at the Veteran’s Hospital in Tucson, AZ. While at the VA, he developed a passion for diabetic foot care and treating lower extremity wounds. Additionally,

his professional interests include foot and ankle trauma, sports medicine and general foot and ankle care. Dr. Law’s dedication to the lower extremity began years ago after sustaining multiple foot and ankle injuries during high school and college. Prior to residency, Dr. Law graduated with his Doctorate of Podiatric Medicine from Rosalind Franklin University in North Chicago, IL. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from Utah State University in Nutrition Science. Dr. Law is a native of Arizona and is happy to be practicing in his home state, and serving the people of Cobre Valley. He

has always wanted to live in a small town and feels honored to provide his medical expertise with our community. Apart from medicine, Dr. Law is fluent in Spanish, enjoys spending time outdoors with his wife and three sons. He enjoys woodworking, hiking and going on road trips. The Town of Superior has a new full-time police officer. Jessica Brown was hired on Aug. 31, 2020, and will be replacing an officer who will be retiring soon. Jessica was born in Auckland, New Zealand and moved to the United States in 2001. She lived in Virginia before moving to Arizona to attend college after becoming a U.S. citizen her senior year. Jessica attended Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, Arizona. She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Global Security and Intelligence Studies. After earning her degree, Jessica moved back to Virginia where she became a deputy sheriff. After serving as a deputy for three years, she returned to Arizona last year. She holds numerous certificates in the areas of tactical medicine, firearms and law enforcement. “In my free time, I am always looking to enhance my skills to better perform the duties of my job by taking skill-based courses,” she said. “I don’t ever want to be in a position where someone needs help and I don’t know what to do.” Because her police certification from Virginia was not transferable to Arizona, Jessica will be attending the

police academy in Phoenix. She will be graduating on Jan. 28, 2021 after completing 20 weeks of training. Police Chief Frank Alanis said that Jessica will be the first Town of Superior officer to attend the academy in about 10 years. Jessica was asked why she became a police officer. “I’ve always had a knack for solving problems and helping people,” she explained. “Law enforcement is the perfect career for me to use my skills and further my reach in being able to assist those in need, whether it be an emergency or just someone needing a listening year.” Jessica said she “fell in love with Arizona” while attending college in Prescott. “I am so glad I had a chance to move back,” she said. “I love small towns and the outdoors, and Superior is just that. It’s just what I was looking for. I enjoy checking out the little shops on Main Street, getting to know the people and hiking the nearby trails. The residents have been so friendly to me and I can’t wait to fully immerse myself in the community once I graduate from the academy.” Jessica Brown will be a welcome addition to the Town of Superior and the police department. When you see her on patrol after she graduates, make sure to say hi and get to know her.

Eight hundred miles is a long distance to attempt to drive in a day. If traveling by foot, bike, horse or any other self-powered means, it’s impossible within 24 hours. Or is it? On Saturday, Oct. 10, hundreds of outdoor enthusiasts from across Arizona will cover

one of over 100 separate sections of the Arizona National Scenic Trail (AZT), which extends from the Mexico border to the Utah border in an attempt to complete the entire trail in a single day. Each person will have a few miles to complete and 24 hours to do it.The Trail is a Refuge

Hundreds expected to travel along Arizona Trail from Mexico to Utah in one day Despite countless large event cancelations throughout the summer and wildfire activity along the trail, the third annual AZT in a DAY remains in motion. “The trail is open and welcomes you to practice social distancing while traveling through breathtaking landscapes,” said Matthew Nelson, Executive Director of the Arizona Trail Association. “In times of uncertainty, the trail is a portal into a calmer, more beautiful reality.” AZT in a Day offers participants a way to be part of a large group of people working toward a common goal, spread out over 800 miles. “It took tens of thousands of volunteers over three decades to build the Arizona Trail, and now we’re delighted to be able to invite everyone to share this amazing public resource during one of the best times of the year. No matter how far you can hike, run or ride, we hope everyone can enjoy some time on the AZT throughout 2020 and especially on October 10 for AZT in a DAY,” said Nelson.Choosing Your Section The 800-mile trail has been divided into sections ranging in length from 1.8 to 15.1 miles. Participants will have 24 hours to complete their portion of the trail. Online

registration is free and open to everyone. Participants can choose between desert, mountain, canyon, forest or urban segments of the trail. The AZT passes through eight wilderness areas, four National Forests, two National Parks, one National Memorial, one State Park, and passes through or near 32 gateway communities. “We advise participants be well-prepared. Some access points require 4-wheel drive or high clearance vehicles,” said Karrie Kressler, Administrative Director. A few sections of the trail are remote and require extra planning. For these sections, participants familiar with backpacking will be required to camp in particular areas at least a day before the actual event to be ready to complete their portion on Oct. 10, according to Kressler. “So far, we have hikers, runners, bikers and equestrians booked for over 90% of the sections, but there are still sections that need to be covered,” Nelson said. This year will be especially challenging for participants, as COVID-19 recommendations discourage carpooling, traveling far from home, and gathering in large groups. This summer’s wildfires have damaged over 100 miles of the AZT and

An Indoor Cornhole Tournament fundraiser is being held for the Winkelman Fire Department on Saturday Sept. 26, 2020 at Santa Rosa Café, 2615 S. 6th Avenue in Tucson. Sponsors for the tournament are OldPueblo Baggers, Elias Musitano, Frank Musitano, Dennis Weber and Guillermo Ortega Jr. Proceeds from the tournament go to the Winkelman Fire Department to purchase swift water rescue equipment. The Winkelman Fire Department has six members that are swift water certified. The fire department operates on a large section of the Gila River. The purchase of the swift water equipment will allow the Winkelman Fire Department to build a swift water team that can become part of the Gila County and Pinal County search and

rescue. The tournament’s entry fee is $15 per player. Check in is at 2:30 p.m. and bags fly at 3:00 p.m. The tournament lasts from 3 to 8 p.m. Masks and social distancing will be required. The first place winning team will receive a personalized journey courtesy of Divil Sports! There will also be raffle prizes.
