MAYOR’S MINUTEBy Mila Besich-Lira

Special to the Superior Sun

November is by far my favorite month: it is the month that we set aside several days to practice our rights to public

participation in our government, we honor and respect all of our Veterans and we spend time giving thanks for all that we are truly grateful. I am thankful for all of our members in our community who do all that they can to make our community a better place. You may be thinking, I am not involved in any of the clubs or committees and that is okay - you are reading this and by informing yourself you are participating. There are many opportunities

to serve in our community - just ask. The fact that we still have a democratic process is all due in part to our Veterans and their families. Their sacrifices continue to allow us many freedoms today and will protect us well into the future. The opportunity to recognize their service exists every day, getting involved in community projects or participating in a public process are both ways to support our Veterans and participate in democracy, everyday not just on election day. There is an extensive public process going on now and into 2017 with the planning of the Tonto National Forest Apache

Leap Management District. I encourage all residents to practice their right to communicate how they would like to see Apache Leap managed. If our voices are not recorded, we may lose an opportunity to protect the uses that we enjoy. You can submit your letters to the Tonto National Forest via US Mail at Apache Leap SMA PO Box 34468 Phoenix, Arizona 85067 or you can submit comments online at www.ApacheLeapSMA.us. Wishing you all a very Happy Thanksgiving - may your holiday be filled with traditions, memories and love.

Gratitude and Opportunity

SUPERIOR POLICE REPORTContinued from page 2

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

I am relatively new to Superior, and it’s an eye opener that so many people just let their dogs run loose. This is all over town. All sizes and breeds. I had a loose dog try to bite my leg (got my shoe) while walking on Main Street recently. The owner was sitting right there, corralled the pup and beat feet out of there real quick. No leash was in evidence. I can’t ride a bicycle here in town without being harassed by loose dogs chasing me and trying to bite my legs and feet. I am not the only one here with loose dog stories.

I refuse to take my own 2 dogs out on leash here in town because of this hazard. It is safer to take a pup out on the trail than it is on Main Street. This practice is a genuine hazard. Someone will get hurt, and someone will get sued. This is inevitable, if this goes unchecked. No one is doing the pups any favors by letting them run loose. I see them dead on the road around here on occasion. It’s right in the Superior town code: Section 7-3-2 Dogs or Cats “At Large” Prohibited. Town: Citations are in order. Thank you./s/ Paul Sears

PHOENIX – If you’re involved in a freeway fender bender, the misconception that it’s best to stay put can leave you in danger, create hazardous slowing and lane changes for all drivers, and increase risks for emergency responders. That’s why the Arizona Department of Transportation and Arizona Department of Public Safety need you to know about the practice of Quick Clearance, in which drivers involved in minor crashes that don’t involve injuries get their vehicles out of travel lanes as soon as it’s safe to do so. No one wants to be in this situation, but with a vehicle crash occurring almost every five minutes in Arizona, everyone should know how best to stay safe following a minor, non-injury collision. Reasons for practicing Quick Clearance begin with a state law that requires a driver involved in a minor crash without injuries to remove a vehicle from the roadway if it is operable and can be moved safely. Doing this is safer for drivers involved in the crash, fellow

What to do after a non-injury, fender bender collision: ’Quick Clearance’ keeps motorists, emergency responders safe, traffic moving

motorists and emergency responders. “Many drivers have been taught not to move their vehicles until law enforcement arrives on scene, but that is not correct,” said DPS Sgt. John Paul Cartier. “Every traffic incident management principle confirms drivers can greatly impact safety, reduce congestion and reduce secondary collisions. Drivers who comply with Quick Clearance state law make a positive difference in many lives.” Quickly moving your vehicle out of travel lanes provides a safer environment to inspect your car for damage. Missing from our hectic and processed lives is real butter, real sugar and good old fashioned cooking and baking techniques. We rarely take

a moment to realize that food just doesn’t taste quite like we might have remembered. The soft yet crunchy texture of a peanut butter cookie, homemade fudge, pies and brownies. Are you hungry yet? This being the season for memories and food, it’s a great time to feature the business of Superior Sweets. Nancy Vogler opened her home baking business, Superior Sweets, not long after the state of Arizona approved a law that would allow bakers to prepare and sell their baked goods which were prepared in their residence. The law does not allow for items like cheesecakes, custards or meringue items to be prepared at home; those require a certified commercial kitchen as a preparation area. For Nancy, she always enjoyed baking. Since she was seven years old she enjoyed mixing up butter and sugars and savoring that mixture even before adding the rest of the ingredients. At first she thought this would be just a hobby business, occasionally baking and selling goods. However, her baked goods have quite the following and she has been busy ever since. Nancy has even developed recipes and named them after mining and ranching terms like the Mother Lode Cookies, Cowboy Cookies and she has also perfected her sugar cookie recipe which allows her to bake custom shape and decorate them for special events. To order some of Nancy’s confections you can find her on Facebook: www.facebook.com/superiorsweets or you can call her directly at 520-827-9461. She also sells her

Head Start hosted its 2nd Fatherhood Activity Day on Nov. 17. It’s a day when they encourage the dads to come and create with their kids. But it’s not just fathers who are invited. Mothers, grandparents and guardians are also encouraged to come. Head Start has three of these Fatherhood Activity Days a year. The kids made Thanksgiving placements, spent time outside playing with their adult guests and then settled down to an early traditional thanksgiving meal. Cat Brown | Sun

Superior JH Patriots Pen winners are, from left, Danika Bryant and Aliyah Soto.

The Superior VFW sponsors a yearly contest for sixth through eighth graders to write an essay expressing their opinion on a patriotic theme. This year the theme was “The America I Believe In.” This year’s winners are Danika Bryant (first place), Aliyah Santo (second) and Adam Navarette (third). Superior’s winners will be advanced to the next round, and state winners will be advanced to the national contest to win a cash prize and a trip to Washington. Each year over 132,000 students enter the contest. When asked what is the benefit of

having students participate in essay contests, Superior Junior High School English Teacher Cheryl Lopez says, “Students write essays to improve their communication skills, to review and remember recently learned material, it encourages creativity and helps students understand their own experiences, thoughts, and feelings. Writing essays and compositions is also essential for preparation for high school and college.” And we support that. Congratulations to this year’s winners and good luck at the next level.

The descendants of Patrick and Molly Gorham hosted a Gorham family reunion Nov. 5, 2016 at the Magma Club in Superior. The setting was perfect as Patrick and Molly first settled their family in Superior on Nov. 11, 1918 in a

Pat and Molly raised their family of 11 children in Superior from 1918 until Patrick’s death in May of 1953 and Molly’s passing in December, 1989. Superior resident Patricia Gorham Brown and San Manuel resident John (Jack) Gorham are the two surviving of the 11 children of Patrick and Molly. Descendants of Patrick and his six siblings came from Delaware, Wyoming, Texas, New Mexico and various points in Arizona to attend the family reunion in Superior. Patrick was the son of Peter and Anna Gorham, Irish immigrants to the USA in 1864 from Clifton and Round Stone, Ireland.

For the last 11 years, the Superior Fire Department has committed itself to making sure every child in Superior has a toy for Christmas. Firefighters give up to an average of 1,200 toys per year. They need your help to ensure they can continue to honor that commitment. Santa drives around Superior atop a

Superior Fire truck on Christmas Eve for approximately six hours, stopping every time a child comes out to greet him and giving them a toy. The fire truck that carries Santa is outfitted with over 5,000 Christmas lights and the snow machine. The department is seeking donations of $2 - $5 toys, gift cards or check to

ensure that no child who comes out to greet Santa will be disappointed. The difficult economy has made your support even more important. The Superior Fire Department would like to give a heartfelt thank you to everyone who donated last year and the years past. Without your continued support none of this would be possible.
