The suspect may be physically taken into the department and booked into jail, or the arresting officer may write a citation and release the suspect to appear in court later. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of

law. Only criminal citations are listed. All damages are estimates. Items for this report are submitted by the Mammoth Police Department and reflect information available at the time of the report. By John Hernandez On Wednesday, July 31, a small plane crashed at the San Manuel-Ray Blair Airport.

The pilot was flying from Las Vegas to Baton Rouge, LA. He stopped at the airport to refuel. After refueling he

Plane crashes at San Manuel Airport; other damages reportedattempted to take off when he ran into trouble, his plane crashed into a ditch next to the runway and flipped onto its back. The pilot crawled out from underneath the wreckage unhurt except for a few bumps and bruises. When first responders arrived, he refused medical treatment. An investigator from the Federal Aviation Administration was at the airport Thursday investigating the cause of the crash. The plane was an RV-4. The San Manuel-Ray Blair Airport has had its share of bad luck lately. During the violent monsoon storm a few weeks back, two-thirds of the roof of one of the original airport hangars was blown off. The metal bay doors of the hangars were then blown inward striking two planes and causing damage to them. The doors were also

damaged. The tin roof has been replaced and the doors are being fixed. One of the planes was totaled out by

the insurance company and the other plane will need some major repair work. The storm came in from the Catalina Mountains and it is

believed that a microburst or exceptionally heavy wind caused the damage. The original hangars are 48 years old.

By John Hernandez The Mammoth-San Manuel Unified School District staff was busy this week registering kids for school and handing out backpacks to those that qualified.  The backpack program is another wonderful program operated by SaddleBrooke Community Outreach. They provided the backpacks filled with school supplies for kids in need. The school staff is getting ready for the first day of school which is Thursday, Aug. 8. The school would like to remind parents and students that the cost of school lunch in the cafeteria is now $2.50 for grades K through 12.

By John Hernandez The Sun Life Family Health Center in San Manuel will have a new doctor beginning Aug. 7. Lena Freese, D.O. is an internal medicine specialist. She is originally from Des Moines, Iowa. She completed her undergraduate work at the University of Iowa where she majored in bio-chemistry. After graduating she wanted to take a year off before entering medical school. She took a teaching job in Calexico, Calif. where she taught freshman biology for a year. Lena then attended med school at Kansas City University of Medicine and Bioscience (KCUMB) in Kansas City, Mo. After completing medical school in 2009, she moved to Tucson where she began her residency at the University of Arizona. As part of her residency, she has worked at Tucson Medical Center,

Lena Freese, D.O. is the newest addition to the Sun Life staff in San Manuel. (John Hernandez photo)

New doctor welcomed at San Manuel Sun Lifefarms. She says that richer relationships are built in small communities and more people buy into community involvement. Dr. Freese also recognizes that there are lots of medical challenges working in rural areas including the Tri-Community. The lack of having a grocery store and other services can make it harder to prevent and control our most common chronic diseases. Lena decided to become a doctor after watching her twin brothers grow up with extensive medical problems

from a young age. Lena wanted to help people. She said, “I can make a difference”. Lena Freese lives in Oro Valley with her husband Brad and 2-year-old daughter Ellie. She enjoys hiking and the outdoors in Tucson as well as biking and running. With the addition of Dr. Freese, the San Manuel Sun Life Family Health Center has two nurse practitioners and a doctor specializing in internal medicine. Lena Freese, D.O. is a welcome addition to Sun Life and will make a

University Medical Center and the VA Hospital. She elected to work for the V. A. as her chief residency in internal medicine. She enjoyed working with the

veterans. Dr. Freese is happy to be working in a rural area. She likes the small town life. Both sets of grandparents are from 100 year old

difference in the medical care within the community.

Public NoticeMammoth San Manuel Unified School District today announced its policy for providing free and reduced-price meals for children served under the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program. Each school and/or the central office has a copy of the policy, which may be reviewed by any interested party. The household size and income criteria will be used to determine eligibility for free and reduced-price benefits. Children from households whose income is at or below the guidelines are eligible for free or reduced-price meals. Children who are members of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) households, Cash Assistance (CA) units or Food Distribution Program on the Indian Reservation (FDPIR) households are automatically eligible for free meals. SNAP/CA families will be certified by the determining official via Direct Certification. Foster children that are the legal responsibility of a welfare agency or court may also be eligible for benefits regardless of the income of the household with whom they reside. Eligibility for the foster child is based on the child’s income. Application forms are being distributed to all households with a letter informing households of the availability of free and reduced-price meals for their children. Applications also are available at the principal’s office in each school. To apply for free or reduced-price meals, households must fill out the application and return it to the school. The information households provide on the application will be used for that purpose of determining eligibility and verification of data. Applications may be verified at any time during the school year by school or other program officials. For school officials to determine eligibility for free and reduced-price benefits, households receiving FDPIR only have to list their child’s name, FDPIR case number, an adult household member must sign the application. Households which do not list an FDPIR case number must list the names of all household members, the amount and source of monthly income received by each household member, and the social security number of the adult household member who signs the application. If the household member signing does not have a social security number, he/she must indicate that a social security number is not available. An adult household member must sign the application. Under the provisions of the free and reduced-price policy Joanna Diaz, DTR 520-385-2336 ext. 2214 will review applications and determine eligibility. Parents or guardians dissatisfied with the ruling of the official may wish to discuss the decision with the determining official on an informal basis. Parents wishing to make a formal appeal for a hearing on the decision may make a request either orally or in writing to Arizona Department of Education, 1535 W. Jefferson Street BIN #7, Phoenix Arizona 85007 Phone 602-542-8700. If a household member becomes unemployed or if the household size increases, the household should contact the school. Such changes may make the children of the household eligible for benefits if the household’s income falls at or below the levels. By John Hernandez The San Manuel Historical Society had a grand opening last Friday of their new museum location in the lower arcade on 8th Avenue next to the San Manuel Barber Shop, where Jazz it Up hair salon used to be. They moved the museum from the back of the thrift shop to the new location. The new building gives them more space to display their artifacts and historical data. The museum is in need of volunteers to work at the museum. They would also like to find someone with a good knowledge of mineralogy to identify the rocks and minerals in their collection so they can be displayed at the museum. The San Manuel Historical Society is open Tuesday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Arrangements can be made for a special showing by asking at the thrift shop.

By Brittney SmithSpecial to the Miner The Oracle Historical Society allows Chuck Sternberg to pursue his passion for historic buildings. Chuck, 68, was born in Tacoma, Washington. His father then moved him at age 12 to Tucson, Ariz. in 1957. Chuck attended the University of Arizona for three years, studying architecture. After a year leave, and returning to Tucson, Chuck was looking for a temporary place to live. Art and architecture professors suggested to him the Rancho Linda Vista Ranch in Oracle. Chuck enjoyed the beautiful area and has stayed ever since. Years later, Chuck became a laborer on an archaeological site near Redington. He then worked for the Arizona State Museum for 30 years as its cartographer and scientific illustrator for sites all over the state. Chuck then worked for U.S. Geological Surveying and various other scientific institutions. He spent 35 years mapping before moving on to designing houses 12 years ago. Mapping buildings and prehistoric sites with the Arizona State Museum helped develop Chuck’s passion for historic buildings. Chuck has since designed three large homes in Oracle. “I just love Oracle,” Chuck said and believes the town has “a unique little history.”   Chuck’s first experience with the Acadia Ranch Museum, the core of the Oracle Historical Society, happened in 1978

when a large, late 1800s ranch home with a rich history, owned by Agnes Ramsay, became for sale. Worried that potential buyers would want to tare it down or change it dramatically, she sold it to the society who wanted to maintain it. To pay the mortgage, the home hosted several different entities throughout the years, such as a boarding house, beauty salon, dance studio, and store front. Seven and a half years ago, Chuck returned to the building to become a board member of the Oracle Historical Society after a friend suggested it to him and began the restoration process of the building.

“That really increased the membership and people started donating because they could tell the place was being cared for,” said Chuck. Chuck is now the building manager for the museum located at 825 Mt. Lemmon Rd. in Oracle. He is involved with restoration, design, and helping create most of the displays. The hours per week he spends at the Acadia Ranch Museum depend on the various projects. He recently spent around 500 hours heading the restoration of an adobe ice house within the museum. Other volunteer duties include maintaining the building during open

hours, guiding visitors, landscaping, and helping with major projects such as the American Flag Ranch, the Oracle Run, and the Oracle Car Show. The Oracle Historical Society was founded on March 4, 1977 to promote the preservation and education of the history of Oracle and its surrounding region. It has an active board and about nine members. It is a non-profit organization and funds many of its projects through grants, donations, and fundraising. To get involved with the Oracle Historical Society call the office at 896-9609 and for more information visit oraclehistoricalsociety.org.
