OBITUARY

Vickie H. Alonzo, 81 of Superior, AZ passed away on Monday, Aug. 31, 2015 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Phoenix, AZ. Vickie was born on Nov. 17, 1933 in Fresno, CA to the late Rito and Maria Hernandez. She was known to everyone as “Nana Vickie.” She enjoyed spending time with her family. Especially the weekends, this is when everyone would meet at her house for coffee and breakfast. She cherished her conversations with her comadres, compadres and especially her sisters. She was a devoted Diamondbacks and Suns fan. But If there was an early game, she would make sure we were all out of the house in time for her to watch. She didn’t like to be disturbed while her games were on. Vickie will be welcomed in heaven by her husband, Elias Alonzo Sr., 3 brothers, 2 sisters, and one grandson. Vickie

The original U.S. 60 Widening ADOT plan for the Y-turnout at Hwy. 60 and Main St. in Superior calls for moving the Y approximately 200 yards to the east. Many Superior residents and business owners would like to see the Y lined up with the entrance to the new Circle K. This would allow easier access to the Circle K and eliminate

vehicles that are turning west from the Circle K onto Highway 60 from having to turn onto the residential street Palma due to the concrete medians that will be built dividing the highway. Several Superior residents are in contact with ADOT to see if it is possible to line up the Y with the Circle K.

A few weeks ago I had a staunch Republican tell me that I shouldn’t be saying that all Republicans are

“racists” and that he couldn’t understand why people try to portray the Republicans in that way. I told him that I never said all Republicans are racists but they certainly encourage it. I also asked him, what is the Republican Party? It’s not the party of Eisenhower or even Reagan anymore. Just as I was about to rethink my feelings on the Republican Party, Donald Trump had to open his mouth and demean the Mexican people and immigrants again. I guess if you are a rich, arrogant, megalomaniac you can get away with saying anything. Trump has said that his first day in office he will begin deportation of “illegals” including “Dreamers.” He also wants to overturn the 14th Amendment to the United States Constitution which grants birthright citizenship to anyone born in the United States. He says that “anchor babies” are not American citizens. How about anchor wives? He’s been married to two immigrants. He also talked about building the wall along the Mexican border and making Mexico finance its construction. Not going to happen. It upsets me more that the other Republican candidates have not attacked him for it and have even followed his lead. Ted Cruz says he will deport and is against amnesty. Jeb Bush got so flustered he used the derogatory term anchor babies but now says he was talking about “Asian people.” Dr. Ben Carson even went as far as talking about using drone strikes on American soil to destroy caves that are used as observation sites for smugglers. Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu was there with him posing for the cameras as usual. He is probably getting ready to announce his candidacy for Congress. Watch out Board of Supervisors, Sheriff Paul will be asking for more money in his budget to purchase a drone, or can he use RICO funds for that? Speaking of drones, about a month ago someone shot down a personal drone/radio controlled flying apparatus that was hovering over his yard. I say, “good shooting.” There is a lot of good that drones can be used for but the potential for abuse exists. These small drones can be mounted with cameras and used by voyeurs or to spy

on neighbors. Weapons including explosive devices can be mounted on them as well. They should not be allowed to fly within miles of airports. Laws governing their use need to be placed into law now. A few more words on the Trump Wall: The only way I can see the Wall being financed would be for the Mexican government to set up factories manufacturing Trump piñatas and “Beat Trump” wooden baseball bats. They could be sold on both sides of the border. The piñatas would be in Trump’s image and the bats used to beat the crap out of them. While waiting their turn at bat, the kids could recite a nursery rhyme like “Dumpty Trumpty planned a great wall, Dumpty Trumpty made the Republicans fall.” Too clarify the issue, most Republicans are not racists. For the second straight week the sixth-ranked Superior football team handily defeated its opponent. Last Friday night it was Duncan that was steamrolled by the Panthers, 55 – 6. The Panthers have outscored their first two opponents by a combined score of 113 – 6. Admittedly the Panthers haven’t faced their stiffest competition yet, but the results have still been impressive. Superior’s defense held the Wildkats to only 113 yards of total offense last Friday and picked off Duncan quarterback Christopher Corona three times. The Panthers travel to winless Baboquivari this week. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Have you sat on one of the new benches on Main St. or at the school? Have you seen the new wall at the Bob Jones Museum? These projects have been completed under the work of the creativity and leadership of Robert “Beto” Cervantes. Beto has always had a heart for the beautification of Superior. One of his first projects was the bench and monument to miners at the Rails park on Main Street. He didn’t stop there. If it was not for his vision and helpfulness, the walk over bridge crossing over Queen Creek probably would have been closed years ago. With the support of the Town of Superior, financial contributions by businesses and hundreds of hours of volunteer work, he helped to repair both bridges and ensure that they could continue to serve the community. After the bridges he moved on to the construction of the Veterans memorial wall and monument at the Fairview Cemetery. Following his retirement, Beto took up woodworking. “You can only clean your yard so many times before you get bored,” he said. He started by making small cabinets and cupboards for his family. Then he started making benches and those benches have really become quite a hit. One of his first benches is the bench in front of the Superior Chamber of Commerce.

“I really like working with groups that help the community. The Chamber does a lot for the community,” he said. The benches he made for the school were actually built from the wood from Mr. Van’s third grade classroom loft. It brings him a lot of pride to see people sitting on the benches and enjoying Superior. Beto saw a need for some beautification at the Bob Jones Museum. He became a member and began drawing up ideas for the yard. He enlisted the help of Bruce Armitage and Woody DeLaRosa to start planning. Originally he presented the idea to the board of the historical society but they opposed the idea of the wall because they felt removing the wire fence from the museum would hurt the eventual historic designation of the building. With the help of Mr. Armitage, the two presented to the Superior Town Council for approval to build the wall and it was approved after much discussion with the Mayor and Council. Mr. Armitage contacted the National Register of Historic places and confirmed that a new wall will not affect the designation of the building as a historic building. Bruce and Beto were able to raise $2,500 to fund the purchase some of the materials and pay for the labor to have the wall built. Several individuals and businesses donated and all the rock was donated by Albo Guzman Trucking. Other contributors include Save Money Market, Angel Gomez,

Beto says his next projects are to have the museum painted and the lighting fixtures

outside of the museum painted then they will start to focus on the Besich Park and possibly other buildings on Main St. His life’s motto has been customized from the famous John F. Kennedy speak. “I always say, It is not what the community can do for me, it is what I can for my community.” Beto has always worked for the people, he was a teacher, counsellor, and probation officer. He also served a member of the Town of Superior Planning and Zoning committee and also was elected to the Superior Town Council and Superior Unified School District Governing Board.

Angela C. Jimenez, MD, is one of the newest doctors on staff at Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center. She relocated from California and joins the staff of CVRMC as a Pediatric Care Physician. The hospital is beyond pleased to welcome her to the community. Dr. Jimenez received her Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). She attended Medical School at the University of Southern California (USC) where she also completed her Pediatrics Residency at Los Angeles County Hospital. She is board certified and a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. She has special interests in pediatric obesity, asthma, and ADHD. Dr. Jimenez has family from Globe, AZ. She enjoys traveling, music, reading, and Mexican food. After recently becoming a mother herself, Dr. Jimenez is happy to be a part of bringing Pediatric Care to the Copper Triangle. JFK Student Council visits school Board Parliamentary procedures. Making motions. Approving new policy. These are just a few things experienced by the John F. Kennedy Elementary School Student Council and Class Representatives when they visited last week’s Superior School District Governing Board meeting. Another minor capital project completed at Resolution Copper Oddonetto Construction, a local contractor from Globe, recently worked with Resolution Copper to safely complete a pump house project in Superior. The new upgrades will continue to supply water from the Arizona Water Company to Resolution Copper’s current facilities. All employees on the job were from the local Copper Triangle area, including the San Carlos Reservation. They finished the job on time and incident free.

“We run our projects very systematically; Oddonetto came in and completed the job safely allowing us to have the water we need during the development of the project,” said Resolution Copper construction superintendent Bo Deen.
