By Rev. Dennis Van GorpFamily Life Christian Center We often talk about the fight between good and evil. In cartoons, we see it represented by a small devil and angel, each standing on someone’s shoulders, as they whisper in their ears. We may laugh at it, but the concept is very real. Often, we are influenced to go in either the right or wrong direction by others. Here are some of God’s promises to us: Psalm 34:7, “The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear Him, and He delivers them.” From Psalm 125:2 we read, “As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the Lord surrounds His people.” And from Exodus 14:14, “The Lord will fight for you.” This warfare that we are engaged in is a spiritual

Pastor’s Cornerconflict. Understanding this idea allows us to gain insight into the battle. Romans 7:23 explains that this is an ‘inward’ battle. “I see another law at work in my body – waging war against my mind and making me a prisoner of sin in my body.” If our enemy can manipulate how we think, he can then control our actions. 2 Corinthians 10:4 tells us that our weapons must be spiritual. “The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. They have divine power to demolish evil strongholds.” Spirit beings are not hindered or stopped by silver bullets or wooden stakes. They are defeated by the power of God. Ephesians 6:12 tells us the enemy is invisible to our natural eyes. “Our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, the authorities, the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” Unless God opens our spiritual eyesight, we will not see into the arena of angelic and demonic beings. 1 Timothy 6:12, “Fight the good fight of the faith.” It takes belief and trust in God in order to participate in a spiritual battle. 2 Timothy 2:4 tells us, “No one serving as a soldier gets involved in civilian affairs; he wants to please his commanding officer.” We must be dedicated to gaining the victory over our enemy. How does Satan fight? Because he hates us, he lies to us and lies to others about us. He convinces those we trust that we cannot be trusted. He slows us down, hinders our forward progress, steers us down the wrong roads, wounds or kills us. He wants to win at any cost. In 1 John 4 we read, “Greater is He that is in me, than he that is in the world.” In Zachariah 2:5, the Lord declares – “I myself will be a wall of fire around you, and I will be the glory within.” With God on our side, the outcome is predetermined – we win! Make certain that you have joined the winning team. Give God control of your life.

There’s something rather satisfying about using confi scated funds from criminal activity to help out a substance abuse organization – karmic, one could say. Sheriff Paul Babeu visited with Elizabeth Magallanez last week and presented her with a $2500 check for the Superior Substance Abuse Coalition’s annual Win to Swim event. The donated funds are given from the Sheriff’s RICO funds (Racketeer Infl uenced and Corrupt Organizations). Each year the event features prevention booths, free food, entertainment and lots of activities. Once participants visit each booth they are awarded with a free backpack fi lled with school supplies and given a free one day admission to the Superior Swimming Pool. This year the Win to Swim event will be held on July 20 from noon to 4 p.m. at the Superior Junior-Senior High School multi purpose room. If you are interested in more information on SSAC you can visit them on their Facebook page at: http://on.fb.me/NERKgZ.

By Mila Lira Students at the Superior Junior-Senior High School will have to get up a little bit earlier this school year if proposed changes to the schedule are approved by the governing board. Parents of Superior Junior-Senior High School students attended an

informational meeting about the proposed changes to the start time at the school. Administrators are proposing a start time of 7:30 a.m., which is a half hour earlier from previous years. Principal Billy Duarte explained to parents that the earlier start time will

allow for the school to offer intervention time during the school day to help students with core subjects they are struggling with. Duarte provided many statistics to parents on the importance of readying students for college and not just the workforce. He explained that by 2018 it is expected

that only 38 percent of jobs available will not require a college degree. Duarte further explained that state funding is tied to several federal mandates which require the schools to offer the intervention to ensure that test scores continue to rise. If those scores are not met

SUSD Proposing earlier start for Junior-Senior Highby districts the state can be forced to take over a school. Superintendent Pete Guzman explained that Superior is actually ahead of most districts in implementing the core standards and intervention programs. The earlier start time will also keep students from missing instruction time when they leave for extracurricular activities. School bus routes will be changed to pick up Junior and Senior High students beginning at 6:30 a.m. provided the changes are adopted by the Superior

School Board. Overall parents in the audience expressed some concerns about safety at bus stops in the early morning hours, but there was no major outcry opposing the proposed changes. The Superior School Board is expected to vote on the changes this Wednesday, July 11, during its monthly board meeting at the Kennedy Elementary School Parents with questions regarding the proposed changes are encouraged to call the Junior-Senior High at 520-689-3100. Ernest Bustamante,

a Democrat, has announced that he is running for Arizona State Representative in the newly drawn Legislative District 8, which includes: Globe, Miami, Superior, Kearny, Hayden, Dudleyville, Winkelman, Mammoth, San Manuel, Oracle, Florence, Eloy, Coolidge, Casa Grande, and San Tan Valley. Democrats (38%) outnumber Republicans (28%) by ten points in Legislative District 8. [www.azredistricting.org] Bustamante stated, “This election, we have the opportunity to take back our district, which has been controlled by Republican extremists who have made wreckless cuts to education and waged war against women and working families. I am running for State Representative because Arizona needs new leadership and a new direction – a path that puts working families first!”

Ernest Bustamante grew up in the copper mining community of Winkelman and graduated from Hayden High School. He attended Central Arizona College and is employed at ASARCO, where he is a proud member of the United Steelworkers Union, serving two terms as Vice President. Ernest is a former legislator (2003-2004) who helped pass all-day Kindergarten and worked on a bi-partisan basis to restore funding for transportation Pinal County. At the local level, Ernest sat on the Mammoth Town Council, where he built roads, received grants to improve the parks, and served as Commissioner of the Planning and Zoning Board. He is also a former small business owner of San Pedro Valley Transport, a non-emergency medical transportation service. Ernest has also been

By Mila Lira Despite the unusual rain and clouds that hung around Superior for most of the Fourth of July, the community still celebrated America’s birthday. Even though the fireworks were not held this year, Superior families enjoyed many of their favorite pastimes: swimming, horseshoes, Cornhole, dancing and eating. With funding from Resolution Copper and the RICO funds given to the town for summer recreation activities by Sheriff Paul Babeu and County Attorney James Walsh, residents were treated to FREE hamburgers, hotdogs, drinks, snow cones and watermelon. This was good thing considering participants had ample opportunities to build up an appetite with the various tournaments, swimming and dancing. Kids were treated to free glow sticks, bouncy castles, face painting and balloon animals. New to the annual Fourth of July festivities this year was a cake decorating contest. There were six cakes submitted and three cakes took the top three prizes. Winning for the best use of technique and decoration was Christina Magallanez; Best use of Theme went to Christin

Rain does little to dampen the fun for

Uriquijo and Jesse Arroyos for their “America the Beautiful Cake”; and winning the best tasting cake category went to Lila Torres for her cake which had a peach cheesecake filling and rum frosting. The horseshoe and Cornhole tournaments were sponsored by the Superior Optimist Club and were done to raise money for the Longoria and Castillo families who lost their homes to fires in June. The tournament raised $1000 which was

split equally between the two families. Superior’s own Angie Gomez and her partner “The Manic Hispanic” entertained the crowd with their favorite songs. Several residents won tickets to upcoming concerts which were donated by Gomez and Manic. Many of the local community groups and businesses also contributed

to the event. Contributing to the event were The Red Bear Outfitters who cooked all the food for the event, Tameron Ice, Tameron Septic, Superior Optimist Club, Superior Rotary Club and the Superior Chamber of Commerce. Volunteers from the Optimist, Rotary, Substance Abuse Coalition and the Superior Little League also assisted during the day.

In June, Bill Bolin, Project Manager for the Copper Corridor Economic Development Coalition (CCEDC) was invited to attend the White House Forum on Regional Innovation in Rural America.

The purpose of the Forum was to highlight regional programs that are creating jobs and boosting economic development in rural areas and as the sole Arizona resident to attend the Forum, Bolin explained that it was his responsibility to highlight the CCEDC’s achievements in those areas.

“The [United States Department of Agriculture] was listening,” Bolin recalled in an interview with Copper Area News, “We all had the chance to speak up and tell about the projects we are have that are seeing success.”

According to Bolin this is the first year the USDA has hosted the forum and the response was above and beyond what they anticipated. “There were 27 organizations representing 25 states, 50 people in all,” he said. “We spoke with representatives from…[Housing and Urban Development], the Economic Development Administration, the White House Council on Domestic Policy, the American Farm Bureau and more.”

The CCEDC works to develop sustainable communities and a prosperous future for eastern Pinal County and Bolin explained he was chosen for the task when the federal government asked AZ USDA to recommend rural economic development leaders for the program.

“We have a very strong relationship with the Arizona Department of Agriculture,” Bolin said. “The strength of the Copper Corridor’s economic development programs worked in our favor.”

Bolin went on to note that when given the chance he highlighted the Copper Corridor’s focus on tourism, its knowledge base, broadband infrastructure and the CCEDC’s Business Success Center. “The Business Success Center is pretty remarkable,” he said. “It provides workshops, one to one counseling for folks who want to be entrepreneurs.” It is this entrepreneurial spirit that Bolin contends has returned to rural America in a big way. “Everyone was talking about it,” he said, “Displaced folks are working hard to make jobs for themselves, which is what we see in the Business Success Center.” In addition to business development, Bolin noted that much of the discussion centered on agriculture and making the most of available resources. “There was a lot of talk about asset inventory,” he explained, “They’re using existing facilities and turning them into things like farmers markets.” While the knowledge he traded was worth the trip, Bolin also returned home with some particularly valuable business contacts. ““It was great for networking, I met a few key people who work with Federal Department of Transportation,” he said. “Those are the kinds of contacts Pinal County needs. I’ve invited them to the Governor’s statewide conference in Oct.” Looking back on the experience, Bolin believes that it was beneficial on both a regional and federal level and knows that the other representatives who attended the Forum feel the same. “The response very favorable, we were asked if we would want to do this again and the response was overwhelmingly yes,” he said. economic climate. As State Representative, I will work diligently to create jobs, support education, and promote new sources of energy such as solar and wind technology. The future of Arizona’s economy is going to be directly impacted on how

we address education today. Are we going to prepare our children for a global workforce? Or continue the same archaic policies that have ranked us last in education for years. We need a change. The future of our state depends on it.” More information can be found at www.VoteBustamante.com.
