W\ ABOUT TOWN •In a recently published obituary for Annie Tallas, a daughter-in-law (Albina Tallas of Sugar Land), was not included on the family-approved copy received by the Headlight. •Ashley Ann Cranek graduated from Southwest Texas State Univer- sity at San Marcos with a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Information Management. The graduation was held at 2 p.m., Dec. 19, 1998 at Stra- han Coliseum. Attending were her parents and brother, Cotton, Connie and Hank Cranek; grandparents, Louis and Leona Cranek, all of Garwood; and her aunt, Sharon Andress of Victoria. Also attending were Jim, Shelia and Brandon Mathis and Jim Mathis Sr. of Eagle Lake; and NaShay Bram and Jeff Little of El Campo. Cranek is a 1995 graduate of Rice High School and a May 1997 graduate of Wharton County Junior College. She is currently working in Austin for the City Health Department as an Administrative Assistant in the Health Information Department. •Marine PvL Melvin Anderson, son of Lizzie E. Dancy of Garwood, recently completed basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego. Anderson successfully com- pleted 12 weeks of training designed to challenge new Marine recruits both physically and mentally. Heisa 1993graduateofRiceHigh School. •Jessica Briscoe, daughter of Charles and Margaret and grand- daughter of Aggie Briscoe, has been selected to join the National College Honor Society, Alpha Chi. She a junior at St. Edward's Uni- versity in Austin and will graduate in May 2000 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. During the two years she has attended St. Edward's, Jessica has ranked in the top 10% of the student body. Each of her three semesters, she has been in the honors program and remained on the Dean's List. Jessica plans to attend a graduate program on the east coast to attain her Doctorate in Clinical Psychology. •Diplomas were awarded to 665 students during Northeast Louisiana University's fall commencement ex- ercises held Dec. 19, 1998. One area graduate was John Ste- phen Griesenbeck of Eagle Lake who graduated with a BS. •Area Go-Texan events were held in Houston this past Saturday. Competing against 59 other coun- ties, Colorado County's Womens' Hay Haulers placed sixth and the Girls' Horseshoe Pitching team placed ninth. Hay Haulers were Lauren and Michelle Spanihel and Rachel Wei- shuhn. Horseshoe pitchers, pitching for the first time, were Amanda Bur- row and Kayce Wilkerson. Thanks girls for a job well done! Library Lines The Eula and David Wintermann Library is issuing new library cards. Patrons are being entered into the computer even though all the materi- als are not in the computer. In the near future, library personnel will begin checking out materials using the com- puter. The Live Oak Art Center in Co- 24&48 lumbus has a display of eight oil paint- ings at the library until March 17. With Feb. being Black History Month, the library has a display of some famous Black Americans along with books that tell of their accom- plishments.
