A.graduate. of. Lakewood.Ranch. High. School,.Scott. followed. that. by.graduating. Cum. Laude.as. a. commissioned. 2nd.Lieutenant. from. Norwich.University. where. he.received. the.ROTC.Army.Distinguished. Graduate.award. for. 2008.. There.to. pin. on. his. Bars. was.his. grandmother,. Gerry.Haller,. who. earned. her.own. 2nd. Lieutenant.bars. in. 1943.. When,. in.Iraq,. he. received. his. 1st.

Lieutenant. bars,. they.were.again,.Gerry’s,.and,.when. he. was. promoted.to. Captain. on. July. 1,.2011,. he. proudly. wore.his. grandfather. Paul’s.68-year-old. Captain’s.bars.But,. of. course,. Captain.Hall.is.just.one.of.hundreds.of. thousands. of. brave.men. and. women. who.volunteered.to.serve.their.country,.willingly.traveling.halfway. around. the.

world. again. and. again..These. men. and. women.deserve. our. respect. and.gratitude.An. example. of. what.can.be.done.is.illustrated.by.Alma.G..“Gerry”.Haller..The. 91-year-old. lives. at.The.Windsor.of.Lakewood.Ranch,.an.assisted. I’m. talking. about.options,. about. information…about. something.much.more.integral. to. quality. of. life. than.even. cash.. I’m. talking. about.peace.of.mind.Lately. I’ve.been.seeing.a. lot.of.commercials.offering.peace.of.mind..They.make.all.sorts.of.outlandish. promises:. “By. this.product.and. you.never. have.to.worry.”. “Get. this. insurance.and. life. will. be. easy.”. And.my. personal. favorite:. “Our.Internet-based. service. is. just.as.good.as.that.human.being.you’ve.been.using.for.years.”All. of. these. slogans. and.campaigns. play. on. a. very.basic. human. need:. TRUST..All. of. us. want. something. or.someone.to.believe.in..All.of.us.know.folks.whose.basic.trust.in,.well,.just.about.everything,.has.been. permanently. dashed..We. talk. to. them. and. walk.away. thinking:. “Boy,. hope. I.don’t.end.up.like.that.guy.”But.some.of.us.do.You. choose. to. trust. an.employer,. a. bank. officer,.a. commission. salesman..Sometimes. all. goes. well..Sometimes. the. promises.are,. more. or. less,. kept.. But.other. times. it. goes. badly..Expectations.are.not.met..You.make. attempts. to. rectify. the.situation. only. to. find. that. the.person. who. was. so. attentive.when.you.had.your.checkbook.

He. spent.42. months. in. the. Pacific. near.Australia.. After. an. honorable.discharge,. he. hitchhiked.across.America.to.see.his.folks.in.Toledo..It. was. winter. and. temperatures.often. went. below. 20. degrees..Cars.were.never.warm.enough,.and. he. remembers. the. drivers.often.having.to.keep.their.heads.out. the. window. because. the.defroster. couldn’t. keep. the.windshield.clear.His. intention. was. to. settle. in.California.. But.while. in.Ohio,. he.hooked. up. with. two. brothers.who. wanted. to. start. a. delivery.business. but. each. only. had.$1,000.. It. was. right. after. the.Depression. and. it. was. all. their.life.savings..Buying.a.½-ton.Ford.model.truck.and.an.old.Plymouth.station. wagon,. they. started.delivering. ladies. apparel. and.

DuPont.paint. in.their. local.area..Without. any. advertising. they.branched.out.very.successfully.to.include. Brach’s. candy,.Alden’s,.Montgomery.Ward.and.Sears.After.11.years,.Gene.became.a.Christian.and.couldn’t. continue.working. on. the. Sabbath. due.to. his. biblical. convictions.. He.and. his. wife. Blanch. moved. to.Florida,. bought. a. trailer. park.and. became. the. manager,.electrician,.plumber,.excavator,.medic,. and. bible. worker..Later. he. and. his. wife. worked.for. the. Seventh. Day. Adventist.conference. in.Orlando..His.wife.Blanch. started. the.medical.van.ministry. with. 13. vans. servicing.Florida..The.ministry.branched.all.the.way.to.New.York..It.was.able.to.service.over.3.million.people.in.N.Y..alone..Becoming.a.Christian.has.been.the.most.life.changing.experience.of.his.life..He.stopped.drinking. and. smoking. and.became.a.vegetarian..Gene. remains. completely.independent. at. his. home,.teaching.about.Christ.when.ever.asked.
