In May 2015, Sault Area Hospital was awarded Accreditation with Commendation after an assessment by the Accreditation Canada Survey team. Accreditation is a voluntary process that hospitals use to evaluate their services against national standards of excellence. SAH met over 99% of the 2,300 applicable standards and had an opportunity to achieve ‘Exemplary Standing’, which is the highest designation. SAH was required to submit further evidence to Accreditation Canada. The Accreditation Decision Committee reviewed the evidence and awarded SAH with the ‘Accredited with Exemplary Standing’ status. This is the first time that SAH has

received the highest Accreditation distinction. Last year, only 16% of the 1,100 Canadian hospitals who took part in Accreditation received exemplary standing. This highlights the dedication made by the Hospital’s entire team to ensure SAH is an excellent place to receive care and practice medicine. Our team is dedicated to provide excellent care to every single patient that requires care at our Hospital and to continue to strive to be better. This award proves it.

About Accreditation with Exemplary

Standing

For organizations that go beyond the

requirements of Accreditation Canada

and demonstrate excellence in quality

improvement. This is the highest level

of accreditation.

A group of very dedicated and

passionate SAH employees

decided to put together a major

event in the Fall that would help

raise awareness of “Our iCcare

Way” at SAH as well as the needs

our community Hospital faces with

regards to medical equipment in

the upcoming years.

The Fall Fashion Show was a big

hit! Hundreds of individuals packed

into the Marconi Hall to take in

fashion ensembles prepared by

local boutiques. SAH staff with a

few special guest donated their time

to model the clothing.

The proceeds of $12,128 from the

event were donated to the SAH

Foundation to help purchase

medical equipment needed to

deliver care at our Hospital!

This is a truly incredible effort from

individuals that already spend most

of their days ensuring our local

patients receive excellent care.

improving safety in the highest

footprint and ability to

conform to any workflow, it is

safe, accurate and cost-

effective for compounding and

dispensing IV admixtures.

This helps us to ensure patient

safety is a priority. It also helps

to reduce the risk of repetitive

and helps SAH’s pharmacy

Congratulations to the ICU team

(pictured) who, in March, completed

SAH’s First IntraAortic Balloon Pump

on a patient in cardiogenic shock.

One of the many pieces of equipment

purchased by the Sault Area Hospital

Foundation in 2015, the IntraAortic

Balloon Pump, is currently available in

the ICU. This piece of equipment was

an important purchase due to its ability

to save lives in crucial situations.

The balloon pump allows health care

professionals to improve the

ventricular performance of the failing

patients remain close to home

while receiving the treatment

they require.

Xofigo is a type of advanced

prostate cancer treatment.

This radiopharmaceutical IV

injection is now available at

SAH to treat symptomatic

prostate cancer that is

resistant to medical and

surgical treatments and has

spread to the bones but not

other organs.

Stereotactic Ablative Radiotherapy

(SABR) uses concentrated doses of

radiation six times stronger than

traditional radiation therapy. The

doses are delivered with pinpoint

accuracy to the site of the cancer

tumour, with less impact on the

surrounding healthy tissue. As a

result of SABR, cancer patients can

complete their radiation therapy in

as few as four treatments,

compared to over 30 (six weeks),

with potentially better results.

Cancer treatment at our local

Hospital was augmented

throughout this year. Cancer is

a difficult disease to battle. It is

in our patients’ best interests

to have access to the best

treatment options close to

their home and near the

support of family and friends.

Xofigo and SABR are now

available at SAH to improve

access to care in our

community and to ensure our
