MONTHLY MESSAGE FROM RESIDENT COUNCIL PRESIDENT RICHARD STOLL

This is the last message from the 2017-2018 Board. June’s general meeting was mostly about SPEEDING in the park. A letter has been written to management on their suggestions for controlling the repeat drivers that can not seem to understand that the speed limit is 15 MPH, that is Miles Per Hour in English. If you see someone speeding put a written note into

the office, e-mail will do, with license number or name. With enough notices for that individual from the population the management will have more reason for action also from what I hear the police can intervene. So, lets all get together to stop those inconsiderate people or companies and have a safe park to live in. The election for the 2018-2019 Board is a few days away. Make sure you have your voice heard. We still need a secretary and a couple of board members. We can have a “recording secretary”, a new one every month that just must listen to the tape-recorded meetings and transcribe the minutes. If interested in helping contact the new board. The 4th of July cook out is just a day or so away. Hopefully you have your ticket. Carol Orwig and Carol O’Quinn have a big surprise for all that attend and it should be a lot of fun. Come and find out. We also have our annual Appreciation Night for all those tireless volunteers that keep this park running. I have talked to a lot of people, including management, that tell us that a lot of parks don’t even have an HOA. One lady said her park has a swimming pool and a piano in the main hall. That was the extent of their activities. Lets all get to-gether July 28 at 6 pm to honor those individuals. It has been an immense pleasure for me to serve as your President for the last two

years. I’m looking forward to another year, if I am re-elected. So don’t forget to vote on

the 12th.

NO BREAKFAST IN JULY The Board voted that we would not have a Breakfast in July because of so many things happening in the month

of July. If you would like to help Rich-ard Stoll put on a breakfast without the board, let

Richard know and volunteer to help put it on. It would be scheduled on July 14.

MILLENNIUM MEMO

This month’s topic: Dealer Storage Agreements! OK, so that’s a bit esoteric but stay with me.

Union City has invested quite a bit of money to ensure that The Tropics remains the City’s largest source of affordable Senior housing. How much? $4,500,000, that’s how much!

$2M of that went to our Housing Assistance Program, which currently subsidizes nearly 1/3 of you. The other $2.5M helped us buy The Tropics back in August 2000. Even with all this City help, The Tropics can be unaffordable for many folks wanting to buy a home here.

One reason for this: dealers taking advantage of The Tropics’ low rents by bringing in new homes, which are sold at prices unaffordable to low- and very low-income homebuy-ers.

We’re not opposed to dealers making big profits, but our prime mission is to preserve The Tropics as a valuable source of quality affordable housing for the City. Accordingly, for the foreseeable future, we will not be offering dealers “storage agreements” for new homes, unless the dealer agrees to sell the home to a low-income buyer.

Dealers will still be able to list homes for sale for existing tenants and you will be able to upgrade (and sell) your own home, but for now, we need to attract more residents with incomes of less than $71,700 (for a 2-person household). That’s fair, isn’t it?

Which leads to a related topic…

It’s That Time Again

You know that pesky Annual Income Certification? The form you promised to complete each year when you applied to live in The Tropics? The form that generates much of the money we use for Capital Improvements? Yes, THAT form!

If you haven’t already, please take a moment to complete your Cert and return it today. You promised, you’ll have to eventually…why not take care of this simple task now?

In Other News…

SPARC, our resident services partner, sponsored another Spring Fling Clothing Ex-change last month. 50 residents came to mingle with neighbors, enjoy FREE coffee & donuts and left with some fancy new duds. Thanks, Stacee, for another fun event.

Stacee also announced the relaunch of the Tai Chi Class, in cooperation with the Resi-dents Club. She also hopes to bring a Diabetes Class sometime in July.

This month’s Kudos go to Rick Henry (443 Samoa) for providing the Clubhouse Flags for Memorial Day, and Art Tipton (264 Molokai) for assisting. Thanks, guys!

Have a Safe & Sane 4th of July…and turn in your Income Cert! George Turk

Enjoy the 4th of July Barbecue and Chili Cookoff. The office will be closed for the holiday. Please remember that fireworks is not allowed in the Tropics – do it somewhere safe and not in our park. Fire danger is extremely high, especially with the warmer weather.

Be sure to attend the Residents’ Club meeting on July 12th to vote for your favorite candi-dates to carry on the leadership for the next year. Be involved and come to the meetings to state your choices on various matters that concern all residents. Financial Assistance information from Millennium Housing was mailed to all residents to reapply and we have extra copies in the office for those that want to apply for the first time. As time permits, either Kathy or I can assist you with any questions you have and help you prepare the forms due by July 31, 2018. Hopefully, we have received all the In-come Certifications as they are due by July 9. Reminders to all Residents: Please do not pick the fruit off your neighbor’s tree unless you have permission. We are still finding trash and furniture in the green waste bin that does not belong there. Please use common sense when disposing of unwanted articles. The crows on the north side of our Park are protecting their nests and have been dive-bombing some of the residents. You might want to put off walking for a few weeks or maybe use an umbrella. We all are so thankful that everyone was safe and out of the home that recently had an electrical fire. The response from the Fire Department was extremely fast and it prevent-ed the fire from spreading to neighbor’s homes. Kathy Vincent will be enjoying her 5th year working in the office this month. It has been a pleasure to have her assistance and friendship. Good going Kathy – You rock.

JULY 20TH—A WOMAN, A GUN AND A NOODLE SHOP (SAN QIANG PAI AN JING QI) (A

SIMPLE NOODLE STORY) (THE FIRST GUN) (2010) Love, betrayal, and murder take root in the deserts of China in this comedy drama from filmmaker Zhang Yimou. Wang (Ni Dahong) is an ill-tempered tyrant who runs a noodle shop not far from the Great Wall. Wang treats his employees like dirt and isn't much friendlier to his long-suffering wife (Yan Ni), who soothes her nerves by having an affair with Li (Xiao Shenyang), one of Wang's cooks. The wife would like to take Wang out of the picture, and one day she gives Li a gun, suggesting that he kill Wang so they can live in peace. A crooked cop named Zhang learns about the plot and tells Wang about the lovers, offering to kill them for a price. The next day, Zhang returns with evidence that Wang's wife and his cook have been shot, but shoots Wang before he can pay him. Zhang is about to empty out Wang's safe when he discovers he wasn't the only one with a plan to double-cross the despised noodle baron. Inspired by Joel and Ethan Coen's Blood Simple, San Qi-ang Pai An Jing Qi (aka A Woman, a Gun and a Noodle Shop) was an official selection at the 2010 Berlin International Film Festival.

NOTES FROM YOUR EDITOR:

Please submit your article NO later than 6pm on the 10th of every month to the Breeze email address:

[email protected].

YES—The rumors are true! I will not be seeking reelection. I will still be “BREEZE MAGAZINE” Editor till the end of my term. I plan to work with the new Ed-itor in the coming months to make the transition go as smooth as possible.

If you enjoy the “Getting to know your neighbor” ar-ticles. Please help by submitting an article of your neighbor or just interview a friend in the park. Submit the questions and answers of the interview and it can be written for you. Email to [email protected]

We are trying to limit the inserts. Please have flyers and articles in by the dead-line. If you wish to submit a flyer after the deadline or are told your submission has to be an insert because of lack of space. You are responsible for making the copies and be present to help insert into the Breeze Magazine. Please include your name and phone number so I can notify you when the magazine arrives, you can come with your volunteers and help with inserting the flyer. THANK YOU

We welcome all articles from our residents as space allows. The only require-ment is that your article not be political or personal in nature. They will be in-serted as space allows with consideration given to content and quality.
