Jennings Street School Newsletter
From the Principal
This term the students at Jennings Street School are involved in History Inquiry topics learning about Me, My Family, and Games enjoyed throughout time. The Homecrafts Room is doubling up as a Science Lab this year. Students have been making lots of predictions in science as they anticipate some of the reactions that might occur when they mix substances together. SSG information will be sent home in the near future, with some families receiving information within a translated form. We greatly appreciate you notifying us of your preferred interview time, as soon as possible.
School Council Nominations
Due to some unforeseen circumstances, two of our parents have resigned from their role as parent Representative on School Council for 2020. This leaves two unexpected vacancies to fill. Involvement in School Council provides a great opportunity for parents to have increased voice in enacting the learning vision for the school. With the School developing the 2020-2024 Strategic Plan there could not be a better time to join. If you are curious, I would embrace the opportunity to chat further with you about this role.
Curriculum Day—Monday March 16th
I take this opportunity to once again remind families that School Council have endorsed an additional Student Free Day for 2020, which will take place on Monday 16th March. The focus of this day will be preparing for the school review to be undertaken in Term 2.
Traffic Management Policy
Leading into the wetter months, we would like to remind families to please
familiarise themselves with the Traffic Management Policy and be mindful of parking
restrictions at Jennings Street School. The Traffic Management Policy has been
attached to this newsletter and can also be found on the school website https://www.jenningsstreetschool.vic.edu.au/policies.html

Head Lice Alert – Please regularly check your child’s hair
They’re Back! Head Lice is an ongoing issue in school settings and Jennings Street School is no exception.
We rely on families to follow ‘best practice’ in treating head lice. Please be aware that one treatment is not enough. Treating head lice effectively involves an initial treatment, a week of combing the child’s hair with conditioner to determine the presence of eggs and a follow up treatment one week later.
We have attached information on treating and controlling head lice.
Dear Parents/Carers
The National Assessment Program—Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) 2020 tests will be undertaken by all Australian Years
3, 5, 7 and 9 students on 12, 13 and 14 May. Students will be tested in Writing, Language Conventions (spelling, grammar
and punctuation), Reading and Numeracy. The NAPLAN tests are implemented by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment
Authority (VCAA) on behalf of the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA).
The results of the tests provide diagnostic information for parents and teachers about a child’s performance in Literacy and
Numeracy. The information can be used to support teaching and learning programs and to improve student achievement.
Students with significant intellectual disabilities can be exempted from one or all of the NAPLAN 2020 tests. In certain
circumstances, adjustments are available for students to enable them to participate in the tests. Your child’s teacher will
have details of these adjustments and of their appropriateness for your child.
For further information about the NAPLAN tests, please visit the NAP website at www.nap.edu.au
Yours sincerely
Rosemary Hayes
Principal
NAPLAN TESTING:
If you would like to discuss if your child should undertake the NAPLAN testing, please
contact the Principal prior to 4:00pm Tuesday 3rd March.
Welcome to the family!
Three of our teachers have recently welcomed babies into the world! Congratulations to Jonny, Steph Y and Brad on becoming parents for the first time!

expected behaviour at school and how
to be a good friend! In Maths,
we have been exploring

during Guided Reading and

experiments!

genU GAMER A social skills program in Werribee using gaming to level up social skills and
build resilience.
At GAMER, we use gaming as an engaging vehicle for growth. We aim to build
confidence, resilience and communication in those who struggle with isolation. The
social environment is built around people with like-minded interests, where a love
of gaming and pop-culture is not only accepted — it’s celebrated!
People participating in this program have all dealt with factors affecting
socialisation, be it mental health challenges, Autism spectrum disorder or
bullying. At GAMER, participants are encouraged to develop interpersonal skills at
their pace.
Please come along to an information session with the Youth Services’ Manager of
GenU to discuss some group programs for your child. As well as the Gen U Gamer
Program there is an Art and Adventure program too.
Date: Monday 16th March
Time: 1.00 – 2.00pm.
Place: Jennings Street School, Laverton
NDIS funding can be used for these programs.
