By Dave ScottI went for a jog on the Lynn Valley trail the other day… what with the great weather we have been having, it was just one of those opportunities you had to take advantage of, and enjoy the day.

I invited one other person to join me (her name is Kelly). We had actually never met, but I knew she liked to run and I thought this would be a good way to get to know her. Kelly has recently moved into the area and has been busy settling in, so I thought a run would be the perfect way to break the ice.

We hit the trail… a nice easy pace and we began to chat. As we eased into the conversation, I found out that Kelly, along with her parents and younger brother were originally farmers from Saskatchewan. By the pitch in her voice and the way her eyes lit up, you could see it took her quickly back to a wonderful time in her life. She told me that she had come to Ontario once as a kid with her 4-H club… and she remembered it being hot here and was surprised by the humidity…

Kelly’s family tree traces back to Romania on her father’s side. Her dad was born in Saskatchewan and was one of eleven children. He stayed working on the farm when all of his siblings left for school… he helped to support them all… Kelly has a strong sense of pride when it comes to her family and their rich heritage… she reflects back to the large family gatherings on the prairie.

She tells me that her dad was a very smart man… who never went to college or university… he had those everyday smarts that perhaps you cannot obtain through a degree.

Kelly herself, went on to the University of Saskatchewan, earned her degree and then chased down her Masters.

The trail was the perfect setting to chat… it is so much easier to just talk when you can relax and let the day fall away as you run. The trail itself makes conversation easy with the foliage, the sites and the sounds… it makes you appreciate all that we have.

I told Kelly that I heard she had done a little running and wondered what else she enjoyed… well there was running, swimming, biking, the occasional glass of wine and a little online

shopping… she smiles and kinda’ gives a little nod… saying something along the lines, we all have our little vices. We chuckle and carry on.

She really likes the area and is looking forward to moving into Port Dover soon. She can’t wait to settle in, get out and discover Norfolk County… she mentioned that she had enjoyed lunch in Normandale the day before and did a little exploring with the gentleman who gave her the tour… I chuckled knowing that Mr. Race had taken the time to welcome Kelly to the neighbourhood.

Kelly’s partner, Mario, is still back home in Cambellford, Ontario and will be joining her soon… for now she has rented a cottage out Nanticoke way and is busy making arrangements for the move to Port Dover…

Her world is a busy one… I can understand why she likes to get out and run. When I meet folks for the first time, I go with my gut feeling… and with Kelly, I’ve gotta’ tell you… she is good person.

Our conversation on the trail told me of a strong intelligent woman, with a great sense of humour, who isn’t afraid to mix it up with the boys… but at the same time understands the importance of teamwork… she wants to make life better for those in Norfolk County.

Kelly’s Saskatchewan heritage burns brightly… and you feel like you have known her all your life… she is receptive to listening to others… her opinions are well thought out and she will share them if you ask… I guess it is that farm background, something a lot of locals can relate to…

So our run was drawing to a close. Kelly and I finished up the trail-run and headed back to her place of business… she has been in this business for a long time and is very good at her job… oh, I guess I kinda’ forgot to tell you what it is Kelly does for a living… not that it matters… I mean she doesn’t seem like the type of person who worries about a title… and who else would walk out the front door of work, in shorts and t-shirt and head for a run with me… well, Kelly Isfan, the new President & CEO of Norfolk General Hospital, that’s who!

Welcome to Norfolk Kelly…

Welcome to the Neighbourhood

By Dave ScottCardinal Muffler in Simcoe was the donation site where the MS Society received a cheque for $6,500. They raised $4,500 at the MS Golf Tournament and Scotiabank Simcoe kicked in an extra $2,000. Dr. Horton of the MS Society said that all the proceeds would remain in the

area. He commented on how well organized the event was, thanking Cardinal Muffler for their continued support over the last three years.

The course at Pine Valley was excellent, as was the turnout, with over eighty percent of last year’s participants returning.

Our neighbourhood MS Society uses the funds raised to assist folks locally… helping to provide wheelchairs, walkers, scooters, safety

equipment for around the home, and funds to assist in areas like housecleaning.

If you would like to get involved, call 519-426-0101 to volunteer. Don’t forget that there is also a MS support group that meets once a month at the Wellness Centre. The group is a great outlet for folks to talk about MS, how they are coping, to share ideas and to support one another.

To all the folks who golfed and volunteered… excellent work!

The Simcoe and District Youth Soccer Club Inc. was formed in 1973 serving the Town of Simcoe and the surrounding areas of Port Dover, Waterford, Jarvis, and all the areas between. The dream of a new soccer park came true in 2006. A clubhouse with lights would make it complete!

The club has grown to 1100 registered youth players, 76 teams,

152 coaches with an active and energetic executive with numerous volunteers in 2010. If you add the Norfolk Soccer Club and the Langton Minor Soccer Club, there are more than 1700 kids and young adults playing soccer - more than all other team sports combined in Norfolk County!

The Simcoe and District Youth Soccer Club Inc. has been run as a non-profit organization for many years that is supported by over 90 local businesses and service clubs. Divisions include children starting

at 3 years of all age and up. With this wide age bracket, we include co-ed, men's, women's, recreational, and competitive teams.

Our dream Clubhouse would have toilets, showers, change rooms and storage of equipment. Calculated costs take into account a septic system and well. Having these ammenities would make it much more convenient and appealing for all people to want to attend games and support their friends and family. Lights on the pro fields would allow greater usage from older teams as well as our men's league, 'Simcoe Thunder' , to play. The opportunity to leave 'clean & fresh', allows a

player to further enjoy time with family, and gives any travelling teams the opportunity to stay in the Norfolk area longer (ie; going out for dinner, site seeing, etc.).

I have a personal attachment towards the Simcoe and District Youth Soccer Club Inc. as I have coached and my children have played. I know the benefits that such a facility would give to the youth and the community at large, adding value and enhancing the Norfolk area.

In 2009, Julie Leatherland took a trip… not your average everyday little getaway… no; she had planned a trip to Thailand. While there, she studied the art of Thai massage which had always intrigued her… you see, Julie has been a Registered Massage Therapist since 1998… working mainly out of the Woodstock and Mount Pleasant areas, specializing in Swedish massage. She has recently opened up her own clinic at 176 North Main St, Simcoe called Simcoe Therapeutic Massage.

Back to the Thai of the story… so as Julie prepared for her trip, she did her homework and began learning about Thai massage. She took a few massages and began her own research.

Julie tells me that the Thai massage is a series of stretching, almost yoga like, and that it was brought back from India by Buddhist Monks… who used the stretches after hours of meditation… for over the past 2,500 years the art has been refined.

With her interest peaked, it was off to Thailand to study… she was blown away at how massage was a part of everyday life and how there were so many massage clinics everywhere… the Thai people understand the importance of their bodies and how massage can help with their health. Julie took it all in, emerging herself in her studies, to fully appreciate the complexity of the massage… She wanted to return to Canada fully capable of helping folks with this massage.

Julie was inspired and when she returned to Canada she began

putting her knowledge to use.

Well now that I had her story, there was only one thing left to do… try a Thai massage.

I have to admit… I had seen some of the yoga stretches my wife does… and I was darn sure this old body wasn’t going to do that.

But once Julie explained what we were going to do and we discussed my health history it was all good. First off, you lay down on a mat on the floor, wearing loose fitting clothes so you are comfortable, there were no oils or lotions. Julie started at the feet and worked up, again it is a series of stretches and rhythmic pressure and acupressure… I began to relax and it was at that point I could feel the massage working… Julie and I chatted as I tried to fully understand the experience… but you know once I quieted down and just took it in, I understood better… sometimes I have to remember to just let it happen… don’t question everything… Julie finished up with a scalp massage. When it was all done, I felt absolutely great… Julie made a believer out of me. My hands, feet, legs, arms, back, head… all felt wonderful… I think the monks were on to something!

I asked Julie if there were any other Thai massage practitioners in the area… she didn’t believe so…

If you are interested in trying a Thai massage I suggest you book it

with Julie quickly… because once word gets out… well, everyone will want one.

If you would like to get a hold of Julie call Simcoe Therapeutic Massage at 226-440-2247 or 519-427-6345 and experience a Thai Massage.

resulted in many service cancellations and fuel-inefficient ferries caused the company to go into bankruptcy. Although another ferry service is being discussed, at the present time, air travel is the only option.

We travelled to four islands and found the flights quite enjoyable. Most only lasted about 30 minutes and we probably spent more time going through check-in and security than actually flying. The most interesting flight, however, was the one that took us from Maui to the big island of Hawai’i. This airplane was an eight-passenger plane that left from the tiniest terminal I have ever seen. As we taxied away from the terminal toward the runway that was shared with large jets, we saw a sign that said, “Pilots: The

control tower can’t see you. Taxi

with caution!”

Despite the number of times I’ve flown, I’m still not convinced the theory works, so I’m not the most relaxed passenger on a flight. However, I did well on this flight and was enjoying the views we were getting and being able to see the pilot who was no more than four or 5 feet away. That is, until he got out a small book that I noticed was the plane’s “Operating Manual.” Lots of fun and excitement!

Unfortunately, all vacations must come to an eventual end and I’m now back in Norfolk County enjoying the beautiful fall weather. As lovely as Hawai’i is, I will admit that I think I would get bored with the same weather all year-round. The changing of the seasons that we have here is much more interesting and gives us Canadians something to talk about!

Acorus Restoration

By MARG WERDEN In a continuation of last week’s column, here are a few more things that I learned about Hawai’i while visiting there for the past few weeks.

Sharks! There are approximately 40 species of sharks found in the waters surrounding the Hawaiian islands. They range in size from the deep-water pygmy shark (about 20 cm/8 inches) to the whale shark (up to 15 m / 50 feet or more). About eight of these shark species are somewhat common in near shore waters. We only “swam” with two species: the sandbar shark and the Galapagos shark.

We didn’t really swim with the sharks, although one can actually do this if one is qualified to scuba dive. We spoke to a young man from Italy who went diving with sharks. He said that they fed chunks of meat to the sharks and “if they got too aggressive, you just punched them on the nose.” I’m not sure I would want to test this theory out myself!

My daughter and I only went snorkelling with these marine creatures while safely ensconced in a metal cage. I felt a bit as if I was an animal at the zoo, stuck in a cage and the sharks were swimming by to have a look at us, which is exactly what they were doing since sharks are very curious animals.

The species of shark we saw are top-level carnivores, feeding primarily on fishes. Their roles in reef ecosystems are not fully understood, though they may keep fish population sizes in check, and remove sick and injured fish, leaving the healthiest to survive and reproduce.

Sharks have extremely well-developed sensory capabilities. They can detect sounds (especially splashing) and smells from prey at great distances (up to a mile or more, depending on water conditions). Their eyesight is good, but depends greatly on water clarity. However, incidents of sharks biting people in Hawaiian waters are very rare, occurring on average at a rate of about three or four per year. Fatal shark bites are extremely rare, especially considering the number of people in Hawai’i’s waters. People who enter the water need to recognize that there are hidden dangers. A number of marine animals can cause serious injury to people, and sharks are just one example. Entering the ocean should be considered a "wilderness experience," where people are visitors in a world that belongs to the sharks.

Coral reefsI’m not sure how similar the coral reefs of today are to those that surrounded Hawai’i before humans invaded, but they probably resemble pre-human inhabitation much more than anywhere else found on the islands today. Snorkelling around the reefs was probably one of the most interesting things we did in Hawai’i. The number and variety of fish we saw was incredible. Among them was Hawai’i’s state fish, a triggerfish known as the humuhumunukunukuãpua’a, (say that five times quickly!!), meaning “triggerfish with a snout like a pig.” This fish is classified as Rhinecanthus rectangulus and is endemic to the salt water coasts of various central and south Pacific Ocean islands.

The triggerfish's teeth are blue and they are set close together inside its relatively chubby mouth. It has a small second spine, which it can use to lock its main spine into an upright position and wedge itself into small crevices making it extremely difficult to get it out. When fleeing from predators, the triggerfish will sometimes make grunting noises, possibly a call to warn other nearby triggerfish of danger at hand.

One particularly interesting aspect of the fish's behaviour is the ability to blow jets of water from its mouth. These jets help the fish find benthic invertebrates that may be buried under the substrate. Triggerfish can often be seen spitting sand from their mouths in order to sift through the material in search of edible detritus or organisms. Triggers have the remarkable ability to rapidly alter their coloration. They can fade into a relatively drab appearance when sleeping or demonstrating submission while the coloration is often the most vivid when the fish is healthy and unthreatened by its surrounding.

Interisland travelTravelling between the various main Hawaiian islands is only possible by air at the moment. A ferry service was in place for a short time from 2007 to 2009, but rough ocean conditions in the winter that

The coral reefs surrounding the Hawaiian islands are home to hundreds of species of fish including the Parrot Fish,

named for its mouth, which looks like a parrot’s bill.

Approximately 40 species of sharks can be found in the waters around Hawai’i.

Crowds gathered early in the day to watch Illusionist Lucas Wilson from Port Dover escape from two straight jackets while standing in the upright position. At 5:15 pm the official adjudicator Mr. Philip Robertson who was flown in from New York, stood before the crowd which had grown increasingly in size, and explained the procedure for recording the attempt. Lucas was then placed in the strait jacket with chains wrapped around his body; he laid on the stage and was lifted by a winch into the air. Lucas hung in anticipation as the adjudicator asked, “Are you comfortable?”, and “are you ready?” Mr. Robertson counted backwards from three and Lucas twisted, flailed and thrashed about and in exactly 39.3 seconds Lucas threw his straight jacket to the floor and was declared a winner of the Guinness World Record TM. Cameras flashed, people cheered and Lucas was presented with a beautiful plaque declaring him a Guinness World Record TM Champion. The previous record to beat was 54.24 seconds.

At 6:00 pm Lucas made another attempt in hopes to beat the record he had just set less than one hour previously. Following the same procedure,

answering the same questions, Lucas once again threw his jacket to the floor in an amazing 29 seconds. The adjudicator then presented Lucas again with the same beautiful plaque declaring him a Guinness World Record TM Champion for the second consecutive time.

At 7:45 pm as crowds filled the grandstand, as people took their seats on the track, once again Lucas made an attempt to break his previous record of 29 seconds. As the lights shone around Lucas hanging upside down in a straight jacket, and as the chains glistened in the lights and cameras flashed, once again Lucas miraculously with a blink of an eye broke the third record in an amazing 19.2 seconds. The adjudicator was astounded and said he had never witnessed such a spectacle and said “he has made this

record very difficult to break” Lucas jumped in exhilaration as people asked for autographs and cheered for such an incredible feat.

The Norfolk County Fair & Horse Show is in its 171st year, and is the fourth largest fair in Ontario, with over 120,000 visitors each year.
