Conference Announcement and Call for Papers BINH DINH ANCIENT CERAMICS - VIJAYA KINGDOM AND ITS RELATIONSHIP WITH THANG LONG CITADEL - DAI VIET (11th - 15th CENTURIES) In Quy Nhon city, Binh Dinh Province (Central Vietnam) (Tentative date: From 26th to 28th October 2017) CONFERENCE ANNOUNCEMENT Vijaya was a famous kingdom in Champa history in central Vietnam, emerged and developed during 5 centuries, from the tenth to the fifteenth centuries. During that period, Champa kings ordered to build many citadels, palaces and temples of those many historical traces are still exist in and around Quy Nhon city of Binh Dinh province nowadays. This area is also home to 6 famous ceramics production centers including Go Sanh, Truong Cuu, Go Cay Me, Go Giang, Go Ke and Go Hoi. These centers were discovered in the early 70s of the twentieth century and then officially excavated 16 years later. The results of the excavations of Go Sanh (1990 - 1994), Go Hoi (2004) and Truong Cuu (2014) have confirmed that ceramic centers in Binh Dinh were produced mostly from the 14th to late the 15th century. The owner of these ceramic centers, however, is still a debatable issue. It’s important to note that by the 15th century, Binh Dinh kilns had developed dramatically, produced many high quality ceramics, not only to meet the demand of domestic market, but also to export to many other countries in South East Asia, especially to the Philippines and Indonesia. Vijaya was a famous kingdom in Champa history in central Vietnam, emerged and developed during 5 centuries, from the tenth to the fifteenth centuries. At Thang Long Imperial Citadel site (Hanoi City), numerous of Binh Dinh ceramics were found, date to the 15th century. This is the vivid evidence reflecting the economic and cultural exchange between Champa Kingdom and Thang Long citadel - Dai Viet during the Le dynasty.

In order to shed more light on Binh Dinh ancient ceramics and its role in the history of economic and cultural exchange between Champa and Dai Viet as well as other countries in South East Asia, the Research Center for Imperial Citadel (RCIC) - Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences (VASS), in co-operating with Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism - People Committee of

Binh Dinh Province, are intending to organize the International Conference Binh Dinh ancient ceramics - Vijaya Kingdom and its relationship with Thang Long citadel - Dai Viet (11th-15th centuries) in Quy Nhon City, Binh Dinh province in late October 2017.

This conference seeks to summarize, evaluate the scholarly achievements of Champa ancient ceramics in Binh Dinh and issues related to the history of economic and cultural exchange between Vijaya Kingdom and Thang Long Citadel as well as other South East Asia countries in the past.

Date and location of the conference- Location: Quy Nhon City, Binh Dinh Province, Central Vietnam

(see Map below).- Tentative date: 03 days, from 26th to 28th October 2017.Conference Agenda- International Conference (Detailed information will be

announced later);- Visit archaeological excavation site of Binh Dinh ceramic kilns;

Binh Dinh Museum and several Champa temples in Binh Dinh as following:

+ Visit 4 (out of 6) ceramic centers in Binh Dinh: Truong Cuu, Go Cay Me, Go Hoi and Go Sanh;

+ Visit 3 Champa temples in Binh Dinh: Banh It, Canh Tien and Duong Long;

+ Visit Champa ceramic collection and Champa cultural heritages at Binh Dinh Museum, Quy Nhon City.

Conference Participants- Vietnamese archaeologists, historians, cultural experts, and

officers of the museums, collectors of ancient Vietnam and Champa art.

- International archaeologists, historians, cultural experts and members of Ceramic Associations in South East Asia, Asia and all over the world, as well as Ceramic collectors

Conference Budget- Vietnamese scholars: The organizer will sponsor all internal

expenses for the trip IN Quy Nhon City, Binh Dinh Province (3 days 2 nights);

Being inspired by Binh Dinh ceramics, the conference will focus on three main themes as following:

-Vijaya Kingdom of Champa: The issues related to the history, culture and relationship with Thang Long Citadel - Dai Viet, and with other countries in South East Asia;

-Binh Dinh ancient ceramics: Types, characteristics, date, origin and its role in contemporary cultural life and society.
