Our own show is a ways away but it is not too soon to be working on projects you wish to display to make it the best ever.

Yours in quilting, Nancy

Hello Quilters

I am writing this as I just returned home from Iron-stone Vineyards Winery in Murphys where the Inde-pendence Hall Quilters held their three day quilt show. The hills were beautiful with the fall colors showing on the foliage. The buildings and grounds at the venue were lovely, and the weather was perfect. Flowers are in bloom in planters and flower beds. I ran into Louise Nelson and a friend from a class at Asilomar. It was my first time at this place. There was quite a large display of quilts. It was a lovely day for a drive to the hills. My husband wandered around the grounds while I looked at the show items.

Our guild was well represented with five or six quilts entered into the Pacific International Quilt Festival (PIQF) in Santa Clara. We didn’t win any ribbons but

From the President

From the Vice President

We hope the beautiful weather and fall colors are inspiring you in your quilting. Maybe you will have a brand new creation to show at our November program. We hope so as we have a change for next meeting. Our speaker had to cancel due to illness. This gives us an opportunity to schedule an event we have wanted to do for some time. We have had many requests to have a “First Quilt/ Last Quilt/Ugly Quilt Pro-gram.” We are pleased to announce that we are planning this for November.

Here is how it works: All members are invited to bring the First Quilt they made. If you don't have the very first quilt you made and cannot get it by the November program bring the earliest quilt that is available. It must be your work. You should also bring the Last Quilt you made. It will be great fun for us to see if your style, use of color, techniques, etc. have changed over time. You can tell us what inspired you to make your first quilt/last quilt. We will do this portion of the program in a

“show and tell” format.

The second part of the program will be an “Ugly Quilt” contest. Members are invited to bring an “ugly” quilt. It may be one of yours, a polyester quilt of clashing colors given to you by your “Aunt Maisie”, or any quilt that you thinks qualifies as an “ugly quilt”. We will give each “ugly” quilt a number and put them on display. Members will be asked to view them and vote on the quilt that they think is the ugliest. After the votes are tallied prizes will be awarded to the three “ugliest” quilts.

Join us for a fun-filled meeting on Tues-day, November 10. In December our program will be the Christmas potluck/ornament exchange. This year mem-bers with last names beginning with: A-H should bring a dessert, I-N should bring a main course, and O-Z should bring a salad. More information will be given in the December newsletter.

Happy Quilting. Joyce Compton

mental exercise keeps us young. With quilting, though, we are still in control of how we change or apply the change!!!

Another thought, have you considered making a garment for the show? Recent shows have seen fewer garments produced by guild members, and it would be really nice to see this trend reversed.

Finally, congratulations to Nancy Galloway, Teresa Seifert, Lila Bradshaw, and Lynn Kelso, who had quilts accepted into PIQF. If I missed anyone else, I am sorry. Let us know if your quilts are exhibited somewhere so we can acknowledge you.

Happy sewing!! Suzanne and Ursula

QUILT SHOW CORNER

Countdown 14 months

I had the opportunity to work with some guild members the other day, auditioning fabric, discussing techniques and refining design. It was exciting, and I think that we all benefited from this opportunity to grow and develop these quilting skills. It was a great example of how we each can grow as quilters and the value of our quilting friends in facilitating that growth. The object of our efforts in this instance was the opportunity quilt. It is going to be very eye-catching.

As you create quilts for our show, I would encourage you to use the great resources in our guild, get additional opinions and suggestions when you are stuck, even if the suggestions do not turn out to work for you. Just the process is really helpful in refining what you need to do to be satisfied with your efforts. Take a chance on a new technique or color or design idea. We are often told that change is good, and

Lila Bradshaw and Louise Nelson

We want to thank everyone who has so generously participated in our Birthday Quilt Challenge. Your response to our challenge has been exciting and gratifying.

Warm Wrappings will meet on Wednesday, Nov 4th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Freedom Fabrics, 660 Bitritto Ct. #A, Modesto. Bring a sack lunch, your sewing machine and tools; we'll supply the fabric and instructions. It's a fun time of sewing. Come even if

I want to thank you one and all for all the support that Mom and I received. Sarah is doing well and continues to improve each and every day. The warm wishes she received helped to boost her spirits during her long hospital stay.

We have three new and excit-ing books for the library:

"Paradise Stitched" by Sylvia Pippen is on Sashiko & Appli-qué Quilts. The book is filled with awesome ideas and good instructions.

"William Morris In Appliqué" by Michele Mill has some new and interesting appliqué patterns and styles. Michele uses the sewing machine for appliqué as well as embellishments on her designs. The book is well laid out with good instructions which include clear pictures.

"Quick Star Quilts & Beyond" by Jan Krentz takes Star quilts into some interesting twists.

Thank you all so much for participating in the first (annual) event featuring the panties party. You all deserve a big pat on your back. We delivered 292 panties to the Modesto Haven for Women. It is a good organization for our sisters in their hour of need. It seemed everyone made

Judy showed inspirational slides as well as a good number of her Mariner's Compass quilts which gave Judy her quilt career. She also showed many traditional quilts which incorporate dogs and sheep, the latest interests in life for Judy and her husband.

Block of the month for next month was introduced and shown how to make, step-by-step.

This month's blocks were won by Warm Wrappings.

I have several completed quilt tops that my Mother and Grandmother made over 50 years ago and we would like to give completed quits to members of the family.
