Attention Middle Grade Students — Dress Code

Each student has the responsibility to dress appropriately for the school environment.

Apparel that disrupts educational activities and processes of the school will result in the removal of the student from the regular school environment until acceptable apparel can be secured for the student. The administration will be the final judge about whether a student’s clothing is appropriate for school or wheth-er it will create an environmental climate that is distracting to learning. Administrators, faculty, and staff members will enforce the dress code. All dress and grooming shall conform to health and safety or special program requirements, and all such requirements shall be enforced. Specialized programs may call for more specific dress and grooming requirements which shall be set forth in the program de-scription.

The following minimum standards of dress and grooming shall apply to all students in the postsecondary/workforce education schools of Pinellas County: a. All shirts and blouses must cover midriff, back, sides, and all under-garments including bra straps at all times. b. All trousers, pants, or shorts must totally cover undergarments in-cluding boxer shorts. c. See-through or mesh fabric clothing may only be worn over clothing meeting these minimum requirements. Unacceptable dress in the fundamental middle school: Dresses, shirts, and blouses, which bare the midriff Tank Tops See-through Clothing Clothing disruptive to the learning environment Yoga pants Slippers (shoes must have a hard bottom)

REPORT ABSENCES

Now on our school website you will find a new icon that says “Report Student Ab-sence”. This icon will be on each of our website page. When families click on this icon it generates an email that will go to the Outlook mailboxes of our office staff notifying us of a student absence. Families should be informed that they can use this method to re-port absences in addition to all the existing ways such as calling and writing notes. They will also be able to include an attachment such as a doctor’s note.

W e kicked off our year on the elementary side with a school-wide book called Ordinary Mary’s Ex-

traordinary Deed. Students learned how one small act of kindness can not only brighten someone’s day but can lead to them doing something kind for someone else. Ask your child about Mary’s deed. It’s important to show ran-dom acts of kindness throughout your day. We would love to have more school wide books to model quality character traits! We are just looking for someone to

sponsor a book of the month! So if you or your business would like to sponsor one of our character trait books, just talk with Mrs. Cran-dall or Mrs. Ballard. Donations can range from $300-$500 depending on the book. This would give each class a book to enjoy and learn from.

PSAT for 8th Grade Students On October 19th, 2016, our school administered the PSAT 8/9™ during the regularly sched-uled school day. This test focuses on the classroom skills and knowledge your child will need to be successful in college. The PSAT 8/9™ is another great way our school is helping your child: Get on track. Test results show your child where his or her strengths are, what to work on to be college-ready, and how to stay on track from 8th to 12th grade. Get stronger with practice. After the test, your child can strengthen essential skills and knowledge for high school with free personalized practice on Khan Academy®. All 8th grade students at Madeira Beach Fundamental School are automatically registered for the PSAT 8/9™ at no cost to you, so there were no additional steps needed to get your child signed up. We will receive the results in the spring. District Application Programs The District Application Period is January 4-13, 2017. Information Fairs will be held at Gibbs High School on November 10th from 6pm to 8pm and Pinellas Park High School on Novem-ber 12th from 9a.m.-12p.m. Please remember you must apply and accept a seat in your de-sired school. A fundamental seat is guaranteed, if you apply and make it your number one choice. You must also accept. In addition, there are shadowing opportunities for students in many of our local high schools. Please check with the high schools to find out more infor-mation.

KUDOS: Thank you to our PTSA for putting on an awesome night at our Fall Festival. That evening takes many many hours to plan and boy did the hard work of the PTSA pay off. We had a record night with attendance and the money that was made by that evening will go far in helping our school, students, and staff. Thank you to all of the volunteers who helped make it happen, and to all of the families for coming out to support the school.

Thank you to everyone who came out to our first Spirit Night at Square 1 Burgers. They re-ported a record night and out of the 10 stores they have, not one has ever had a spirit night as big as the one we had that night. AMAZING!!! Thank you to Joel Mistretta's landscaping company.

They were very generous in helping to landscape our marine building grounds. We really appreciate your generosity!

Congratulations to our Middle Side Artist:

I wanted to recognize two of our outstanding artists, Bethann E. and Vita S.. Both of them received the highest score of 4 for the Taking Shape art show at Dunedin Fine Art Center.

Referendum funds strengthen reading, art and music programs, provide up-to-date technology, and help recruit and retain quality teachers. Pinellas County voters support-ed the half-mill property tax in 2004, 2008 and 2012, all times by large margins. An in-dependent citizens committee oversees the distribution of funds to ensure the money is spent as voters intended. The Referendum brings in about $34 million a year for the dis-trict. Every penny of the money collected through the Referendum is locally controlled

and goes to Pinellas County teachers and students.

Thanks to the Referendum, Pinellas County Schools has:

Strengthened Reading Programs

Every reading classroom and every content classroom (such as math, science and social studies) is equipped with a class-room library filled with diverse and up-to-date materials to supplement core instruction.

The Leveled Literacy Intervention program was expanded to all elementary schools. The intensive, small group reading program is for students in grades K-2 who need extra assistance to achieve grade-level proficiency.

Funds continue to provide middle and high school reading classrooms with materials that would not otherwise be availa-ble, including instructional software, engaging fiction and non-fiction, magazines and newspapers.

Teachers have the opportunity to attend trainings with nationally recognized literacy experts.

Invigorated Visual Arts Programs

All schools have equitable funding for quality art supplies, equipment and technology that help students learn new skills and produce strong, award-winning works of art.

All high schools, as well as several elementary and middle schools, have digital arts computer labs.

Thousands of students have participated in hundreds of field trips to art museums and galleries, exposing children to fine art. Since the Referendum was renewed, about 32,000 students have participated in field trips to museums and galler-ies.

Revitalized Performing Arts Programs

All elementary music classes received musical instruments. All schools have received supplies, such as band room furni-ture, risers, microphones and music stands, as needed, to ensure equity among music programs throughout the district.

Instrument rental fees are waived for children who cannot afford them.

The district has rebuilt string orchestra programs. Without Referendum funds, there would be no funding for string instru-ments, supplies, string teachers, string coaches and the All County string program.

Nearly every high school has had their auditorium sound systems upgraded.

Provided Enriching Up-To-Date Technology

Interactive Smart Boards have been installed in classrooms throughout the district, helping teachers provide engaging les-sons. Teachers receive training and coaching in the use of this technology.

Teachers have more access to digital resources beyond core curriculum.

Funds cover maintenance, repairs and replacement parts to keep technology running and updated.

Recruited and Retained Quality Teachers

Eighty percent of Referendum revenue supplements teacher salaries, demonstrating the high value placed on recruit-

ing and keeping quality teachers in Pinellas. The Referendum is providing each teacher a supplement of $3,827 for the

2016-17 school year.

Mid Term Exams Please pay close attention to this update regarding the implementation of district-developed end of course and midterm exams within Pinellas County middle schools. The assessments are the result of the passing of Senate Bill 736. Since this bill was passed, the Pinellas County School Board approved the 2014-2015 Middle School Exam policy. This policy can be found in the District Bylaws and Board Policy manual in the “About Us” section of the district website. To highlight a few items: · Midterm exams for middle school students will take place during the following exam window: 1st Semester (Dec. 12–15, 2016) and 2nd Semester (May 17-22, 2017). · The district-developed exams will count 10% of the student’s midterm and/or final grade. · In order for a middle school student to earn high school credit for Algebra I, the student must take and pass the statewide, standardized Algebra I End-of-Course (EOC) exam and earn a pass ing grade in the course. · In addition, a student’s performance on the Algebra I EOC exam will constitute 30 percent of the student’s final course grade. Students must pass Algebra I in order to fulfill graduation require ments. Additionally, to earn high school credit, a middle school student must take the statewide, standardized Geometry End-of-Course (EOC) exam and earn a passing grade in the course. The EOC exam is 30 percent of the student’s final course grade. In addition, the Civics EOC exam will constitute 30 percent of the student’s final course grade. Thank you for all you’ve done to encourage, guide and support your middle school student this school year.

Bullying

The Florida Department of Education defines bullying as: “systematically and chronically inflicting physical hurt or psychological distress on one or more students. It is further defined as unwanted and repeated written, verbal or physical behavior, including any threatening, insulting or dehumanizing gesture, by student or adult, that is severe or pervasive enough to create an intimidating, hostile, or offensive educational environment, cause discomfort or humiliation, or unreasonably interfere with the individual’s school performance or participation. A policy is in place for the investigation, reporting, and resolution of bullying behavior on the Madeira Beach Fundamental campus. Students who feel they are victims of a bullying situation are encouraged to make contact with administration to begin the investigative process.

October was Dyslexia Awareness Month

Senate Resolution 275 estab-lished October as National Dys-lexia Awareness Month.

What is Dyslexia? “Dyslexia is a language-based learning disability. Dyslexia re-fers to a cluster of symptoms which result in people having difficulties with specific language skills, particularly reading. Stu-dents with dyslexia usually experience difficulties with other language skills such as spelling, writ-ing, and pronouncing words. Dyslexia affects individuals throughout their lives; however, its im-pact can change at different stages of a person’s life. It is referred to as a learning disability be-cause dyslexia can make it very difficult for a student to succeed academically in the typical in-structional environment, and in its most severe forms, will qualify a student for special education, special accommodations, or extra support services.” Source: The International Dyslexia Association “Dyslexia Basics Fact Sheet” 08/07.

Characteristics of Dyslexia

Persons with dyslexia may exhibit any of the following characteristics:

Inaccurate and inefficient single word recognition

Inability to identify a word by sounding out the individual letters and blending them together

Sound/symbol confusion

Problems distinguishing, identifying, or separating the sounds in spoken words

Slow and inaccurate text reading

High frequency of errors in oral reading

Omitting sounds

Adding sounds

Substituting sounds

Reversing or mis-sequencing letters within words when reading or writing (b/d, frist/first, on/no)

Directionality problems with letters

Difficulty with written expression

Difficulty building ideas and images

Slow and inaccurate text reading resulting in poor fluency

Problems understanding or remembering new concepts

Problems with comprehension that go beyond word recognition

Poor visual memory for words in print (inability to image words)

Poor auditory memory for retaining sounds/symbols, words, and concepts

Dyslexia occurs on a continuum from mild to severe and is often hereditary. Dyslexia will likely be severe if a person exhibits both of the last two characteristics listed above. While the exact causes of dyslexia are unclear, recent studies of anatomical and brain imagery have shown differences in the way the brain of a person with dyslexia develops and functions. It is not due to a lack of intelligence. With proper teaching methods, people with dyslexia can learn. Instrument rental fees are waived for children who cannot afford them.

The district has rebuilt string orchestra programs. Without Referendum funds, there would be no funding for string in-struments, supplies, string teachers, string coaches and the All County string program.

Nearly every high school has had their auditorium sound systems upgraded. Provided Enriching Up-To-Date Technology

Interactive Smart Boards have been installed in classrooms throughout the district, helping teachers provide engaging lessons. Teachers receive training and coaching in the use of this technology.

Teachers have more access to digital resources beyond core curriculum. Funds cover maintenance, repairs and replacement parts to keep technology running and updated.
