Pastor’s Pen
It is with much sadness and heavy hearts that we tell you, that at the last Church of the Pines Ministry Council meeting, the deci-sion was made to close Rocking Horse Child Care Center at the end of the day on Friday, November 1, 2019. This decision was made after much discussion and prayer, and in consultation with Rocking Horse staff and after an exhaustive search for qualified
teachers and teacher's aides to hire in order to meet the licensing requirements of the Department of Children and Families and maintain the required child/staffing ratios. We were unable to fill the positions in order to meet state licensing regulations.
Parents of children who are currently enrolled in the center have been notified of the closing. As parents look for alternative childcare options, the Rocking Horse staff and leadership of the church will support parents and their children in this time of transi-tion.
Rocking Horse Child Care Center was established as a ministry of United Methodist Church of the Pines 45 years ago to meet the needs of families in our community who, at that time, were in need of quality, affordable childcare. Throughout these 45 years, hundreds of families found a safe and enriching place for their children at Rock-ing Horse as the need has continued to this day. The Center has been fortunate to have such amazing staff over the years, like Kathy Almekinder for 30 years and Sue McDou-gall for 35 years. And, most recently, Mary Kollath has been employed as a teacher and now Director for 20 years and Mary Congdon, teacher, for 15 years. This is a very im-pressive level of dedication and caring by the staff of Rocking Horse Child Care Center.
This decision will have profound impacts on the lives of the families who have children enrolled in the center as they seek to find other childcare providers. It is a very difficult time for those who have cared for the children as they now begin to search for new employment. This is also a great loss to our church and to the community.
Please hold the Rocking Horse families and staff in your prayers. Rocking Horse has suc-cessfully served families and the community for 45 years and has made a tremendous difference in the lives of many, many people. We honor the dedication of the staff who have given so much of themselves to make Rocking Horse a successful ministry.

thanksgiving prayer that I thought was quite nice.

A Thanksgiving Day Prayer
Lord, so often times, as any other day When we sit down to our meal and pray
We hurry along and make fast the blessing Thanks, amen. Now please pass the dressing
We’re slaves to the olfactory overload We must rush our prayer before the food gets cold
But Lord, I’d like to take a few minutes more To really give thanks to what I’m thankful for
For my family, my health, a nice soft bed My friends, my freedom, a roof over my head
I’m thankful right now to be surrounded by those Whose lives touch me more than they’ll ever possibly know
Thankful Lord, that You’ve blessed me beyond measure Thankful that in my heart lives life’s greatest treasure
That You, dear Jesus, reside in that place And I’m ever so grateful for Your unending grace
So please, heavenly Father, bless this food You’ve provided And bless each and every person invited

WANTED: Your photo in our new Church Directory It would be great if all of our members and those who regularly attend Church of the Pines would have their photos in our new Church Directory. We will be offering to take photos for three more Sundays from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 p.m. in the Ministry Center—November 3, 10, and 17th. You can choose to email a digital photo to the office email at [email protected]. Either way, an information form needs to be completed and submitted with the emailed photo or at the time your photo is taken. Forms can be obtained from the church office or can be printed from our website at www.churchofthepines.org. If, for some reason, you do not want your photo to appear, you can still complete an information form and your name and contact information can be included. The estimated completion date is in January 2020. If you have questions, contact Merry Jorgensen at 715-356-3041. We can’t wait to see you in the directory!

UMW Sunday Thank you to all who participated in UMW Sunday! We appreciate your dedication to UMW and the talents you share.
Celebrating 150 years of UMW Looking back at an old Circle book from 1986—the officers were: Ann Luckert, Presi-dent; Faye Hoagland, Vice-President; Patty Frandy, Secretary; Jeanne Van Order, Treas-urer. Mission Coordinators were: Carolyn Smith, Christian Social Involvement; Lois Ni-cholson, Missionary Education; Evelyn Knight, Supportive Community; Shirley Ahlborn; Christian Personhood. As you can see, the titles of the Mission Coordinators keep changing! Circle Chairs were Grace Circle—Helen Wills, Dawn Circle—Patty Frandy, Es-ther Circle—Sally Ham and Lillian Haff, Martha Circle—Ruth Prims, Ruth Circle—Florence Sontag and Charlotte Boomer. Circles change too. We lost Grace but gained Deborah and Lydia. There were four fund-raisers listed: two Rummage Sales, a Lunch-eon and Bazaar, and the Cookie Walk. Social events were the Christmas Breakfast and the Afternoon Tea in August. Four General Meetings were held—January, March, May and October.

I want to thank so many of you that helped to make the UMW Rummage & Bake Sale a huge success! Thanks to: Patty & Tom Frandy and all who helped set up tables on Tues-day and take down again at the end; all who helped sort and price all the items for sale (and there was a lot!); those who baked, shopped, etc.; and a special thanks to the men who came and cleaned up, returned all the tables to storage and then went to Goodwill with the things not sold. Mission Highlights
Harbor House Crisis Shelters (HHCS)
Harbor House Crisis Shelters (HHCS) is a Ministry of Faith United Methodist Church in Superior, Wisconsin and consists of:
· Emergency Shelter - Harbor House provides thirty days of emergency shelter for home-less women and children and families. The shelter is open 24 hours a day, every day of the year providing daily needs such as clothing, bedding, hygiene products, food, diapers and cleaning supplies.
· Case Management - HHCS case management incorporates coaching, life skill enhance-ment, goal setting, assessments, referrals, and community resources on a bi-weekly basis.
· Transitional Living Center (TLC) - supportive housing assistance for homeless families and single women. All residents participate in weekly case management and monthly resident meetings.

Lakeland Food Pantry
The Lakeland Pantry's mission is to provide individuals and families with a dependable source of supplemental food, household, and hygiene products plus offer programs de-signed to improve quality of life for those in need in the Arbor Vitae, Hazelhurst, Lac du Flambeau, Lake Tomahawk, Minocqua, and Woodruff area.
To fulfill its mission the pantry provides:
Bi-weekly supplemental food New & used donated books for all ages plus current magazines New & gently used clothing for children and adults Infant and toddler needs Medical screenings and programs Community involvement
Established in the early 1970's by the Lakeland Ministerial Association, the Lakeland Pan-try is an all volunteer, non-denominational service. It is part of the Howard Young Foun-dation, Inc.
The pantry receives no government funding or subsidies and relies solely on donations.

Advent Season at Church of the Pines
This Advent season we will be following a traditional worship schedule. However, each week during Advent we will be collecting donations for the Lakeland Food Pantry as part of worship. We will also be learning more about this vital service for our community. Here’s what to bring each week. (All donations should be non-perishable).
December 1, 2019 - Canned goods (veggies, soups, fruit, etc.)
December 8, 2019 - Dry goods - Pastas, Peanut butter, etc.)
December 15, 2019 - Personal essentials (toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, hats, gloves, etc.)
December 22, 2019 - Frozen Foods and special items (more details to come).

Poinsettia Orders & Christmas Eve Worship Schedule
Church of the Pines will be selling poinsettias to decorate the
sanctuary for the holiday. Plants can be ordered “In Honor of” or
“In Memory of” someone.
Order forms are available from the church office or you can print the forms
from our church website at www.umchurchofthepines.org. Choices of
colors are: Red, White, Pink or Burgundy. Sizes include: 4.5” pot (single) -
$5.95; 6” pot (single) - $15.95; 7” pot (double) - $25.95; 7.5” pot (triple) -
$34.95. DEADLINE FOR ORDERING IS TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 26. Checks can
be made out to Church of the Pines and can be dropped off at the church
