We have a front row seat to ensure these developments are a community within a park. With population growth, opportunities for new and increased business will grow. With the improvements to the Broadway Extension and other river crossings we have added better accessibility and created more unified connections to all areas of our city. It is with all of these efforts in mind that I have chosen our 2013 Chamber theme…’Trails to Success in the Northland’. The ‘Trails to Success’ will encompass personal, business, educational, developmental, and quality of life opportunities. It is my personal experience that membership and involvement in the Chamber enhances your possibilities to be successful in the Northland…no matter what your endeavor may be…your TRAIL TO SUCCESS can start right here. Thank you Antioch Printing for printing this month’s newsletter in full color.

Antioch has donated this service to the Chamber to

show our members one example of the services they

provide. Thank You!

Message from the Chair of the Board

In this Chamber, being selected and Northlander of the Year is an extreme accomplishment. The person who is selected is someone who has shown outstanding dedication and support to not only the Chamber, but to the Northland region. As a longtime Chamber member with Mercer, Spencer fields has been an advocate for not only NRCC, but the region. With his leadership on the Northland Regional Chamber of Commerce’s Board, serving as Chair in 2002 and again on the board

in 2010, his vision and organization helped set the stage for the Chamber’s growth and success. Serving as a North Kansas City Schools board member for 12 years, Fields understood the importance of education and serving the community outside the Chamber walls. He is also known for working on many bond/levy campaigns to help better the region. Fields is a leader, friend and a true Northlander in every sense of the word.

Spencer Fields, 2012 Northlander of the Year

As the Chamber enters its 21st year of service to the Northland community, it is my extreme pleasure and honor to serve as your Chair of the 2013 Board of Directors. In 20 years we have seen unprecedented growth in business, population and influence to our great region. We have established lines of communication between business, education and political partners. As we enter the third decade of our existence the sky is the limit for the Northland. In the past year we have seen plans for the redevelopment of Antioch and Metro North malls and the construction of two interchanges on highway 169, which will feed development of the 1st and 2nd Creek areas. It is my hope that new development in the Northland will keep the tradition of Kansas City’s original plan of a city within a park. We have a front row seat to ensure these developments are a community within a park. With population growth, opportunities for new and increased business will grow. With this growth come new challenges on our magnificent school districts. We must advocate legislation for our districts to keep up with demand and maintain our expectation of high quality education.

Among our successes in 2012, Ford Motor Company has committed its confidence in the Northland with a workforce to expand and add jobs to the economy.

Entrepreneurial Infrastructure! Sly James Listed Among Five Innovative Mayors in U.S.Mayor Sly James’s vision of building “Silicon Prairie” took a quantum leap forward when he successfully lobbied Google to partner with Kansas City in an exclusive test of its ultrahigh-speed fiber network. As a result, new businesses and entrepreneurs are already starting to come to this Midwestern tech mecca. James transitioned his City Hall office entirely to cloud computing and open-sourced the development of a new downtown streetcar project. These investments have already helped spur a resurgence in the downtown population, expanding the tax base while improving the quality of life. “Partnerships pay dividends,” James says. “The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.” Among other cities listed were New Orleans-Education, New York-Public Saftey, Chicago-Digital Government, and Oklahoma City-Quality of Life. Dunn & Davison Law Firm, is doing something unusual in January. The law firm partners will be participating in a fundraising climb up Tanzania’s 19,341 foot Mt. Kilimanjaro, from January 12-18, to raise money for water wells in East Africa. The climb has been arranged by WorldServe International (Doug Pitt, brother of actor Brad Pitt, is on WorldServe’s board and will be on the climb) and Africa 6000 International. Together, Brian Dunn and Ron Holt have a fundraising goal of $35,000. The funds raised will be used to install deep community water wells in villages in the Masai land of Tanzania and in villages in Kenya now populated by Somali refugees. To make a contribution of support visit the law firm’s website at http://www.dunndavison.com/news.html.
