Another Successful Chamber ConnectionIt has been a “NRCC month and a half” for me and my home-based business. First thumb up to Chamber member CommunityAmerica Credit Union who assisted me in re-financing my home to HALF the original interest rate, and bent over backwards to get my Home Equity Line of Credit open. Next, Chamber member Dyllan Construction quoted me a great price to assist getting new windows and replace siding on the house. If two thumbs up were not enough, I need another hand for another thumb! While Dyllan Construction was starting work on my home, where my office is located, I had a swarm of the largest Yellow-Jacket Hornets I have ever seen take nest under my front steps. Being that I am one of the 4-9 % of the population that one sting sends me to the hospital, I didn’t want the hard workers of Dyllan being stung. So I called Pete’s Pest Control. Cat showed up and shooed me into the house as she donned her apparatus to start the mass killing of those little beasties. A special Thumb up (Ok, now I need to start borrowing more hands) to Steve with Dyllan Construction, as he had to disconnect my air conditioning to replace the siding, and when re-connected it did not start up when the temperature outside was 105 degrees. Steve went into overdrive, and while testing wires with his meter he was calling hotels for my better half and our four dogs to stay at (It was so hot in the house the fire detectors on my home alarm system started going off). So hats off (several of them), and many thumbs up to these fellow Chamber members for doing all they do! -David Parker, Parker BCS

From the Divisional ChairGovernmantal Affairs Division: Sabin Yanez, Cook, Flatt & Strobel Engineers

The Governmental Affairs Division has been very busy this summer, advocating for the interests of NRCC members. In June, a group of 20 members made our annual trip to Washington D.C. to meet with our Congressional leaders and discuss issues most critical to Chamber members. Discussions centered around the topics of transportation funding, health care reform, small business and economic development. Our Legislative Committee remained in close communication with State and local elected officials by hosting monthly luncheon forums for members. These luncheons provided members to be kept up to date on the most current changes taking place in government locally. The Planning and Development Committee has dedicated time to establishing infrastructure project priorities for the Northland. These priorities have been shared with local governments and the Missouri Highway & Transportation Commission at their June meeting here in Kansas City. Kansas City, Missouri priorities will be presented to the City’s PIAC Committee in August. Our Parks & Recreation Committee has also worked to identify the most pressing parks needs in the Northland, and as a part of this effort, the Chamber supported the 1/2 cent sales tax in Kansas City to aid in improving funding in an area so important to Northlanders’ quality of life.

Google Fiber: Where is Your Fiberhood?

Senior Helpers & Alzheimer’s Foundation of America C.A.R.E.Senior Helpers is an in-home care company dedicated to keeping all seniors independent. Bringing to northland - the local affiliate office of Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) - a national non-profit advocacy organization. Together they will focus on educating and supporting our community on providing optimal care to our Alzheimer friends and their families. The AFA is a leading national nonprofit advocacy organization focused on providing optimal care to individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and related illnesses (dementias), and their families. AFA’s main focus is on care issues affecting the millions of Americans who are challenged each day to cope with this disease—both individuals with the disease, their caregivers, other family members and healthcare professionals. For more information please contact Senior Helpers at 816/455-9300.

When Google announced that they wanted to provide a community with Internet access more than 100 times faster than what most Americans enjoy today, we asked who was interested in working with us. More than 1,100 cities raised their hands, and those of you in Kansas City, Kansas and Kansas City, Missouri won us over with your enthusiasm for better, faster web connections. Here’s why: Google Fiber works better when communities are connected together. So we’ve divided Kansas City into small communities we call “fiberhoods.” Instillations will begin only where there’s enough interest, and we’ll install sooner in fiberhoods where there’s more interest. You can check out your fiberhood’s pre-registration goal, as well as a real-time status update of all Kansas City fiberhoods on our rankings page, google.com/fiber. The rally lasts for six weeks and ends on September 9. When you participate, not only will you help bring Google Fiber to your home, you’ll also help bring it to your community—if your fiberhood reaches its pre-registration goal, we’ll also connect community buildings like schools, libraries and hospitals with free Gigabit Internet. The first pre-registration phase includes homes in Kansas City, KS. and homes in Central Kansas City, MO. But we are definitely committed to serving homes in North and South Kansas City, MO. in our second pre-registration phase. Residents should stay tuned to google.com/fiber and this blog for more information.

Political Memorabilia Exhibit on Display at Park UniversityPark University is marking the election year with an exhibit of political memorabilia in the McAfee Memorial Library on the University’s Parkville Campus. The exhibit is on display through Friday, Nov. 30. The collection, one of the more popular exhibits at Park, is on display every four years and is assembled by Carolyn Elwess, University archivist. Among the more historic items are a Herbert Hoover button, a Richard Nixon bumper sticker signed by Julie and Trisha Nixon, a collection from the 1993 inauguration of Bill Clinton and Al Gore, and items from the 1976 Republican Convention held in Kansas City, Mo. “The collection is truly bipartisan and is not meant to promote or to malign any one party,” Elwess said. “The display is definitely eclectic and always provides some surprises. The creativity exhibited is quite diverse.”Admissision is free. Contact Park University for hours of operation.
