This award is given to one outstanding teacher who goes above and beyond what is expected of an educator. This year’s award was presented to Dianne VanBallas, a 6th grade Communication Arts and Social Studies teacher from New Mark Middle School, North Kansas City Schools. With her endless supply of enthusiasm and love of learning, success is her number one focus and goal for each student in her class. Thanks to generous Chamber members, NRCC was able to provide 15 Northland students with an opportunity to further their education and help eliminate financial burden with a $500 scholarship award to any school of their choosing. If a student decides to continue their education at one of the Northland’s colleges or universities, then that higher education institute will match the scholarship award. Each district selected businesses to honor for their participation and contributions to quality education. These local companies not only provide financial support, but also donate services, materials and time. Volunteers often give of their time and talent and expect no recognition in return. For this reason, we are able to honor these men and women who create positive and dynamic environments for staff and students in their districts. On behalf of the NRCC and Education Committee, we would like to again congratulate nominees in the Excellence in Service and Teaching categories. And a big thanks to our sponsors, Citizens Bank & Trust, North Kansas City Hospital, Citi Cards, Grantham University, NorthPoint Development, Liberty EDC and UMKC School of Education/Northland.

Congratulations Excellence in Education Nominees, Honorees & 2012 Christa McAuliffe Winner

Northland Regional Chamber of Commerce was once again proud to celebrate the success of the annual Excellence in Education Banquet on May 1. This annual event held at the KCI Expo center had more than 700 in attendance to recognize education in the Northland. This exciting event brings together each Northland school district and higher education institute, all from Clay and Platte Counties. We were happy to have an opportunity to honor outstanding students, teachers, staff, volunteers and business supporters involved with Northland education. With a special performance by the Staley High School Drum Line, the fun didn’t stop there! The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the 2012 Christa McAuliffe Pioneer in Education Award.

Park University to Host Coterie Theater ClassChildren will take the stage this summer when Park University partners with the Coterie Theatre to offer drama and acting classes at the University’s Parkville Campus. Week-long summer camps for children entering kindergarten through 12th grade are scheduled for June 11 through June 29. This is the second summer the Coterie School for Theatre Exploration will partner with Park to offer classes. In the Coterie’s classes, professional teaching artists use games, improvisations, acting exercises and scene work to help young actors discover what it means to respond truthfully and believably. In drama classes for younger students, actors flex their imaginations through games, visual arts, music and improvisation. To register for classes, call (816) 474-4241. Registration forms and complete class descriptions are available at www.coterietheatre.org.

Ray Brock Chosen as “Outstanding Missourian”Missouri Representative Myron Neth and Steven Tilley, Speaker of the House of Reprsentatives, approved Raymond R. (Ray) Brock as an Outstanding Missourian for the 34th State Representative District. This is one of the highest honors the House of Representatives gives. His decade’s long service to the greater Kansas City area and specifically the Northland has made him worthy of this high honor. Jennifer Buckmaster – Park Hill School DistrictClass of 2009“Participating in Leadership Northland is without a doubt, one of the most amazing programs I have ever been lucky enough to be involved with. The information presented is not only practical but fascinating, and can immediately be put to good use in both your personal and professional life. The opportunities to speak with and learn from local, city, and state professionals are priceless. You will wonder how you ever got along without the wonderful support you receive from all the new friendships made. If you live or work in the Northland, you should run, not walk, and sign up for this outstanding program.”

Melanie Beard – North Kansas City HospitalClass of 2010 “Having attended many different “leadership” programs, I was very skeptical on how well served time away from my responsibilities would be. I was shocked by my ignorance. The coordination of the program provided all aspects of “life in the Northland”... there was no stone left unturned! That combined with the opportunity to network and form real and lasting friendships with a cross-section of different business professionals made it an outstanding experience.”

Kent Putman - Harley-Davidson Motor Co.Class of 2011“Leadership Northland is more than a program; it is truly an educational and developmental experience. Insight gained from the exposure to our state and local leaders is invaluable to the individual as well as their workplace. Despite working in the Northland for 17 years, I am amazed as to how little I knew about the area prior to participating in the group. This opportunity to collaborate with other leaders in the Northland should not be missed.”

Brad Cope - Alderman, City of RiversideClass of 2012Leadership Northland is an amazing opportunity and truly is a privilege to be involved with. The program captures the experience of exceptional leaders within the Northland and you gain great insight into how State, local governments, community groups and businesses function. Beyond this wealth of knowledge the program provides not only an opportunity to build wonderful relationships but create lifelong friendships.
