The Mayor’s Task Force for the Arts (MTF•A) is designed to address the need for a public aspect to the development and promotion of the city’s cultural framework and an increasing need for Creative Peacemaking. The work of this Task Force and resulting report will create a path for the city toward deeper engagement with the citizens of Kansas City that will make the arts more purposeful, rewarding, and meaningful for our community. Kansas City has long been visionary in its commitment to art, design and culture. From the establishment of the Kansas City Art Insitute in 1885 to the construction of Sky Stations on Bartle Hall in 1994 through the City’s One Percent for Art program, our municipal and civic leadership have shown an ongoing vision and investment in the arts. This Task Force will report finding and recommendations to the May and City Council this year.

Mayor’s Task Force for the Arts

Need is great for community members throughout the area of and surrounding Kansas City to volunteer weekly to work with students. YouthFriends connects these students with caring adults in the community. Either mentoring for an hour once a week during school or tutoring after school, the impact this hour has on a student is significant and long lasting. YouthFriends started in 1995 as an initiative of the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation and area school districts. Each of the 30-some districts and charter schools that work with YouthFriends volunteers offers unique opportunities for the volunteers and students. Whether it is one-on-one mentoring during lunchtime or group tutoring during weekly after school tutoring, the options lend to the various schedules of each individual volunteer. YouthFriends volunteers can dedicate a school-year of service, though it is common for an adult volunteer and student stay paired together throughout the student’s schooling. This opportunity is given to the volunteers to make a long-lasting impact on a student’s life. More information can be found at youthfriends.org or by calling 816-842-7082.

Park University Selected “Military-Friendly School” for Fifth Straight YearFor the fifth consecutive year, Park University has been selected as one of the top military-friendly colleges and universities in the country by Military Advanced Education magazine. Park was selected for inclusion on the list in the magazine’s 2013 Guide to Military-Friendly Colleges and Universities, which provides information about the wide range of benefits the 300 schools provide in four key categories of consideration to servicemembers, veterans, their spouses and dependents (in order of assigned weighting): • Support services • Flexibility • Financial assistance • Military culture The Military Advanced Education honor is yet another in a string of recent tributes to Park University’s efforts to educate members of the U.S. military. In September 2012, Park was named a military-friendly school by G.I. Jobs magazine.
