Dear parents and friends of the school, Primary Canberra Excursion It was my absolute pleasure to join the Years 4, 5 & 6 students from our school, Urana Central, Savernake Public and St Francis Xavier Urana on their annual ma- jor excursion. This year the area of study was our na- tional capital Canberra. We visited 20 venues in the five days and are now very well informed on a wide range of important topics. We learnt all about our system of government and de- mocracy at both old and new Houses of Parliament, ap- preciated art at the Portrait and National Galleries, stud- ied science at Questacon and the CSIRO. We learnt about voting at the Electoral Centre, expended energy at the AIS (Australian Institute of Sport) and the Canberra International Aquatic Centre and were immersed in his- tory at the War Memorial, the National Museum and the National Film and Sound Archive. We were fortunate enough to be able to go into a sitting of the full High Court. We had amazing accommodation at Rydges Eaglehawk Resort and could not have had a better time. All the students were beautifully behaved and totally engaged in all the guided tours, presentations and won- derful exhibits. Each and every venue we visited was very student friendly, making full use of technology and creativity to make learning fun and interesting. As al- ways we were consistently complemented on the quality of our students. A strong point of this excursion was also the way in which students from the four different schools mixed and developed friendships. This was an experience that they will all remember very fondly for a long time. Thanks to the teachers who played a big part in ensuring the success of the excursion. Very long days and a hec- tic schedule are very tiring. Mr Atkins was very popu- lar, especially at the pool, Ms Outram and Mrs Pertzel were always on hand to solve problems and Mrs Orr’s legendary room inspections resulted in a level of organ- isational perfection that parents would not believe. Thanks also to Wangaratta Coachlines who looked after us so well. We were fortunate to receive a $20.00 per head subsidy from the PACER (Parliament and Civics Education Re- bate) project to help fund this important experience. HSC Exams Our Year 12 students, Samantha O’Riordan and Phillip Purtell have completed their HSC examinations. On Monday the school community farewelled them with lunch and a farewell assembly. They will attend, along with their parents and staff, a graduation dinner at Barellan on the 18th November. We congratulation them on the contributions that they have made to Oak-lands Central School and wish them all the best in the next phase of their lives.

School Certificate exams will commence next week. Year 10 are studying hard in preparation. We wish them all the best. Burrumbuttock Family Festival Thankyou to Mr Robey and the Nolan family for trans-porting and selling produce from the school gardens at the Burrumbuttock festival on the weekend. They raised $142 and certainly generated a lot of interest in the Kitchen Garden Project and the school. Melbourne Cup Luncheon @ the RSL Bowling Club Congratulations to the P&C for holding a fantastic Mel-bourne Cup Luncheon at the Club on Tuesday. Ninety four lunches were sold and by all accounts the day was a huge success raising just over $2000.00. A big than-kyou to all the ladies who worked hard to organise and ensure that the day was such a great success. Thankyou to the school families for donating the lovely meal, Amy Doyle for organising and collecting the cold meat and other supplies. And a big thankyou to all those people who supported the event on the day. This function not only raises money to support the students at school but also creates an event to bring together the ladies and gentleman of all ages from the community to have fun. Thank you to the following for donating the raffle prizes: Club Mulwala—Essenza Resort Spa—$100 voucher—won by Cara Bott. River Boot Company donation of a Ladies Handbag—won by Dianne Kerr. DeVine Gifts in Cobram—Basket of Kitchen items—won by Genny Munro.

Thankyou to the Oak-lands RSL Bowling Club for the use of the Club and the staff and committee members

who helped the P&C setup for the day and also the donation of the following prizes: Door prize won by Peter Day, Best Dressed Male won by Bruce Cotterill, Best Dress Lady won by Anne Mardling and Best Hat won by May Day. Asthma and Hayfever The next few weeks are bad ones for asthma and hayfe-ver sufferers. Pollens fill the air and windy days make it difficult for sufferers. If your child has been diagnosed or given medication for hayfever, it needs to be recorded on their medical record and the preferred medicine noted. If they are suffering badly they should bring their medication to school (named) and handed in at the of-fice with written instructions as to how the medication is to be administered. If your child has been prescribed with Asthma medica-tion or a puffer, it also needs to be recorded on their medical record. These students should have a written asthma plan sent to school eg, sports asthma - Doctor recommended use of puffer before sports. They should also be bringing their ventolin or whatever the Doctor prescribed, to school with their name on their name of the puffer. Take it to the office for safe keeping and monitored usage. If you only have 1 of the needed medication, students should take it home each day. If you have a spare - leave one at the school. If is impor-tant to check the dates on the medication to check that it is still ‘in date’. Asthma and chronic hayfever can become bad at the oddest times. We need to be fully informed in case of an emergency so that we can follow your Doctors plan and keep your children as safe as possible. Please think about this and check to see if your children have an Asthma or Hayfever plan and medication at school if relevant. Many students indicated that they use ‘puffers’ yet we have only a few ‘plans’ at school. We did it!!!!

Oaklands Central School is officially a Crunch and Sip school. Our sign is now proudly displayed outside the schools front entrance. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the par-ents who supply their children with fruit and vegetable snacks everyday. You made this possible, well done!!! Johanna Smith

I love crunch and sip because it is fun having it. We have a crunch and sip garden and in our garden we are growing sun flowers, peas and more plants. I like crunch and sip because it makes our school better. My favourite vegetable is sweet potato. By Stephanie Munro.

Mrs Stein’s Poetry and Speech Afternoons This year, apart from learning their poetry class presen-tations for Speech Night, all the Primary students and some Secondary students have memorised their own choice of poem and will be formally presenting it in the school hall. The Kindergarten, Years 1, 2 and 3 students will be pre-senting theirs on Monday 21st November at 2pm and Years 4, 5, 6 and Secondary students on Monday 5th December at 2pm. Parents, grandparents and community are invited to these presentations. We are delighted with the improve-ments the students have made in public presentation and value your being there to provide an audience. I look forward to seeing you there, encouraging our stu-dents in their sometimes first ever poetry recitations. Margot Gorman AppleQuest For the past 2 weeks our students have been participat-ing in the NSW Farmers’ Association Apple Challenge. I entered them in this challenge and they more than ful-filled the terms. We have munched through 300 + ap-ples in a fortnight. For participating in this endeavour the school received a new apple slinky machine (just in time as ours was worn out from constant use), 300 free apples, some badges and certificates. We had lots of fun and tallied our eating scores on supplied charts. Our fruit breaks have been a highlight. How healthy we must all be getting. Let’s keep up the good work and bring fruit/vegetable crunch and sip every day for fruit break. It is making our students fit and alert and healthy. All Primary classes have a fruit break each day as we believe it makes a difference to their energy levels, alertness and thus their learning. We have it at different times to keep the time back up under control as Frances and Judy zip through apple slinkies. We are so lucky to have office staff who are willing to give up their time to slink apples. They do it for the kids. They love seeing them munch healthy food. Thanks Frances, Judy and Eileen. We really appreciate your efforts. Margot Gorman

Hats Thank you everyone for helping keep hats on heads at school. There are hardly any students turning up without hats. This bodes well for keeping them free of future skin cancer. Margot Gorman Transport Mrs Bruce has been doing transport with the Years 2 and 3 and these are some of the wonderful vehicles they have made.

Canberrra The Institute of Sport At the Australian Institute of Sport Years 4/5/6 went on a tour. The first thing we did was we got a passport and we had to do our name, age, address and our street num-ber. The tour guide’s name was Allan. Then we went up and watched a bit about The Institute of Sport and

after that we went to the Basketball Stadium and looked at it and learnt some things about that. There was some-thing strange that we had to find. It was that there was a bridge over the stadium. We went up to the volleyball court and learnt a bit about that. Did you know you had to be over 2 metres tall to play volleyball to reach the net? Then we went to the gymnastics centre and looked around and watched a video. We went to the gym and went through most of the equipment and learnt a bit about that. Then we went to Sportex where there were all sorts of games like basketball, racing, snowboarding, weights and bike riding for us to try. Cockington Green We went on a train ride and it was very slow (there was a bullet train faster than that). There were lots of little people and houses all made to scale. Each house repre-sented a country. I learnt that I should never take Mum there because I wouldn’t get her out because she would love it. Botanical Gardens We went to the Botanical Gardens for the twilight ad-ventures tour and in that tour we entered the rain forest. We saw a ring tail possum but we didn’t see the sugar-glider. When we were walking past the pond we saw a swimming lizard. We then saw the NSW emblem, the red waratah. In a different group the guide picked up kangaroo poo and sniffed it. We learnt that some lizards can go in the water. National Film and Sound Archive First we had a look and went into a little theatre and watched some little films, one of them was coloured and it was Happy Feet and the seats were very comfortable. We went into this big room we got to wind a projector. We got to see little and big LP records and we listened to old music. I learnt that there are big and little records. I learnt a lot about films and how to make films. I also learnt that the films were from a long time ago. Parliament House Parliament House is a huge white building and it has the Senate and the House of Representatives. The House of Representatives is green and the Senate is red or light pink. Ms Julia Gillard isn’t allowed in the Senate and there are lots of paintings in Parliament House as well. The paintings are very expensive. They take the flag down on Anzac and Australia Day. We had morning tea at Parliament House and they gave us a muesli bar and a prima. Madeline set off the alarm because the teacher told her to step over the barrier at the tapestry. Ms Outram said not to listen to a teacher all the time. We would have had to bow when we went into the Senate if there was a meeting on but luckily there was no one sit-ting. We learnt that Ms Julia Gillard isn’t allowed in the Sen-ate.

SECONDARY CLASSROOM NEWS Rydges We had dinner at Rydges Eagle Hawk Resort at 6:00pm every night and breakfast at 8:00 every morning except Friday, because we had to leave early so we could get into Parliament House so we didn’t have to line up. Outside our rooms at the Resort there were some kanga-roos fighting. Lachlan’s fold up bed kept on breaking. We had to clean our rooms in the morning for room in-spection before breakfast and the winners got a prize at the end of the week. Zoo and Aquarium We saw monkeys, snakes, snow leopards, sharks, fish, catfish, crabs, lemurs, penguins, lions, tigers, red pan-das, lizards, meer cats, eels and servals. There was a good shop there as well. We learn’t that penguins don’t eat food in water because they’re not trained to in the zoo. We learnt that snow leopards are endangered species and that some animals live in different habitats and that antelopes like to try and break through their cage. War Memorial We saw the poppy wall and Jed got to put a poppy on the wall. There was a lot of guns and knifes and we got to sit in a helicopter and we went in a submarine. The War Memorial was very good and we got to see a lot of guns. When we played it was very fun. We saw what they did in the war and it looked very hard and scary. Questacon At Quesacon there was lots of things you could go on and they were called Gravity drop, Pixal face, Shark attack, Head lock, Water/ball things, different experi-ments, Graviton, Science show and there was a shop there as well We learnt that it’s all about sience, that liquid nitrogen is minus 150 or 160 degrees celcius (cold), that volca-nos, tsunamis and floods/droughts are natural disasters. Questacon is mostly games, and your eyes can make tricks on you. McDonald’s At McDonald’s the meals were very nice and we had dinner at 4:40pm. Most of us had a burger and we had no time to play in the awesome playground. A guy had a Big Mac for his number plate. We learnt that the meals are very yummy and too much McDonald’s food can make you fat and sick. Canberra was awesome, fabulous, busy, fantastic, amaz-ing, spectacular, excellent, legendary, cool as, extraordi-nary, incredible, wow, super, stupendous, wicked, grouse, wonderful, enormous and tiring! By Years 4/5/6 students

The Year 7 and 8 students have been working on Alge-bra – working out patterns and completing a table of values. We are currently revising for our exam next week. Students completed a revision sheet in class this week and are very keen to tackle the exam next week. Year 10 students have been revising for their school certificate exam next week. We have been completing online multiple choice questions from past exam papers on the NSW Board of studies website. We have also been going through past exam papers together. Students should be working on these over the next few days. The more practice they get, the better prepared they will be. In stage 4 History we are looking at the Renaissance and its influence on the modern world. We have looked at Leonardo Da Vinci’s life and work and the role the Medici family played in Florence. Students also com-pleted assignments on medieval society- with a wonder-ful range of work produced on the diaries of knights in training, the history of the Bayeux tapestry and famous people such as William the Conqueror. We are cur-rently revising work for our exam next week- some stu-dents have borrowed textbooks to aid their revision. Please make sure they are returned as they are in short supply. Karen Davis Mathematics and 7/8 History Teacher We still have some vegetables (especially cabbage) and herbs available from our garden. Please telephone or call into the school office. Students have been having a busy time, with the HSC exams now concluded, the School Certificate exams next week and the 7-9 Yearly exams on Monday to Wednesday. Last Friday students travelled to Urana at the invitation of the SRC for a BBQ lunch and football/netball round robin. Students had a great time and everyone had a good go at the different sports.

COMMUNITY NEWS On Monday a presentation and farewell lunch was held for the Year 12 students as it was the last day of exams. The whole school had a brief assembly where cards were presented from the primary and secondary stu-dents. Careers students have been busy preparing their resume for Mock Interviews which will be held on Monday the 14th of November. Year 6 into Year 7 transition com-mences on the 16th of November with the second transi-tion day scheduled for Wednesday the 23rd. NRMA Driving instructors came to Oaklands last week to give a one hour lesson to students who had their Learner’s license. Instructors were impressed by the student’s manners and participation, though did pick up a few minor areas to help students drive more safely and be prepared to pass the RTA’s driving test. We really appreciate NRMA for running this initiative and Urana Shire Council for contributing towards the cost of the lessons. Andrew Glazebrook Head Teacher Secondary Studies
