Dear All, Congratulations to our sports representatives on their achievements during the last two weeks. Well done! Congratulations and best wishes for future representa- tions. It is not only our students who have accepted challenges outside our schools. It is with great pleasure and excitement that I announce that Miss Melinda Elith has received and accepted an invitation to present at the “Teaching in the 21st Cen- tury Teacher – Enriching Minds, Engaging Hearts”, in Singapore, in May. This is a wonderful opportunity for such a talented and committed teacher, and a due accolade for her efforts and enthusiasm. CONGRATU- LATIONS! I have been generally very happy with the number of students wearing their uniforms correctly. Unfortunately last week there was an incident which led to a student being excluded from an activity because they had not worn the correct shoes. For practical classes this is a safety requirement. I am seeking your assistance in en- suring that our students come to school in their correct uniforms – Thank you! Thank you to our staff and students for their efforts so far. changes, lots of sports trials and RAP excursions and everyone has remained calm, happy and focussed upon achieving outcomes! Facebook Later in the newsletter I have included a two page arti-cle on social networking and how easy it is to gain in-formation from students on-line. In our school environ-ment, students have limited access to social networking sites. Unfortunately at home, many students have access that is not easily supervised. What do you know about Facebook? • What age is it legal to have a Facebook account? • How long are photos and comments kept on Face-

book? • What level of security do you and/or your children

have on their Facebook accounts? If you aren’t sure of the answers, log onto www.facebook.com and read the conditions. Year 7 - 2013 Yes – it is upon us already! If you have a student in Year 6 at present, they will have been given an applica-tion for Year 7, 2013. If you haven’t returned it already, could you please do so, by Wednesday 7 March please?

Excursion Subsidies All students will have the opportunity to participate in minor and major excursions during the year. As many of you would be aware, recent excursions were very heavily subsidised by a number of initiatives, including Federal Government ‘Drought’ Funding. Whilst we are still able to offer some subsidies through the Country Area Program, with the cessation of ‘Drought’ funding, the subsidies will be much less. I have asked staff to provide an estimate of the costs for the major excursions as soon as possible. If families would like to start paying money towards these excur-sions, payment options will be identified with the initial information about these major excursions. If you would like to discuss this with me further, please do not hesitate to contact the school office to make a mutually convenient appointment. School Contributions and Newsletter Primary and secondary schools can request contribu-tions to enhance the school's educational and sporting programs. These school contributions are voluntary and payment is a matter for decision by parents. They help provide additional educational resources for the benefit of students. The Voluntary School Contributions for 2012 are: $30.00 per Primary Student $30.00 per Secondary Student $50.00 maximum per Family $13.00 Newsletter Subscription I have to admit it has been a while since I have had to complete Maths questions in a secondary classroom, (I think it was around the time that Gough Whitlam was removed as Prime Minister by the Governor-General). I

should have known better than to walk into a Year 9/10 class last week when they were working out the factors in algebra equations. Suffice to say, the bell didn’t go early, and I couldn’t escape easily. Sooooooo, I learnt that Maths is a lot easier, if you: • work through the examples on your laptop, BE-

FORE you try to just put the answers in; AND • talk to those around you, two heads are better than

one…….. Enjoy the next fortnight. Vicki Harris Principal - Oaklands Urana Central Schools

Swimming School and Swim Fun Where do I begin to thank the team of people who banded together to make our 2012 Swimming Program such a success? So I’ll just say a huge thank you to: • the Primary staff, who taught right through their

lunch hours to create the best student / teacher ratio possible (One teacher to five students instead of the normal , one teacher to fifteen students, makes such a difference).

• the Secondary Staff ,who covered all the Play-ground Duty for 3 weeks to allow Primary Staff to be at the pool.

• Georgia Tait, who was there early ever day and taught both sessions – where else would you get a swimmer of that quality teaching ‘Learn to Swim’.

• Caz Swann, who found a babysitter day after day to lighten our load at ‘Learn to Swim”.

• Jenny Kerr, who returned from retirement to help because, like me she knows the long term value of teaching swimming right through to Year 6 (most schools only take Year 2 and 3 students who are poor swimmers.

• Max, who drove the bus back and forth to save us a great walk – 4 trips a day- donating every afternoon to the task.

• The Brooks family, who donate the bus for our use for the Swimming Program every year – what a wonderful way to support our school and the life skills of our students.

And then of course the students themselves deserve great praise. Every student from Kindergarten to Year 6 strove so hard to improve and they were rewarded by success. The students could tell you with pride about the things they could do day 1 and how they had improved so much by day 10. Day 7 is always the best day for noticing im-provements. This year every student was floating and covering a few metres in deep water by the end of the Swimming Pro-gram. The older students were so fit! They proved this at the 50m Swim Day where they swam non-stop for hours practising starts and finishes without getting tired. All

in all every student took a step towards better swimming and endurance that will hopefully keep them safe from drowning in their future water adventures. This is what makes the effort put in by everyone so worthwhile. Well done everyone! Swimming Carnival Thank you to all the parents and friends who supported our annual Swimming Carnival. It seems that we should have a carnival every time we expect a drought as we seem to attract the rain. However, we are so resilient. It was a wonderful carni-val with maximum participation in all strokes by every student, from Year 2 to Year 12. Though I love watch-ing everyone, I get a really big kick out of the efforts of our 8 year olds who have just learnt to swim. What an effort they put in! Did you notice that we didn’t need to swim with many students this year? Though we had to go at a great pace, it was a great car-nival and I am very proud of every student who partici-pated with such big hearts. This event is one of our school’s great highlights and one of which we should be very proud. What a pity we couldn’t show you the skills of K-1s but I assure you they would have amazed you with what they learnt this year. Congratulations to the Primary team that qualified to go to the District Carnivals. I look forward to seeing you do your best and representing our school with pride. Kindergarten Welcome to our 6 new Kindergarten girls. They have made a great start to their school learning and have be-come a happy, co-operative group. Swimming School gave them a ‘cool’ start to their schooling. They loved their swimming and did so well. Swimming also gave them a chance to bond with all the teachers in a playful and exciting environment. They enjoy having the Year 6 girls as their peer buddies and if smiling is an indication of a happy environment, then we know we are on a win-ner. All the Kindergarten students have completed their Best Start Testing and the results will be collated this month. We will have parent teacher interviews for Kindergarten before the end of the term. Cricket Congratulations to George Sandral for qualifying to go to Albury to try out for next section of the Riverina Cricket trials. We wish him luck. Well done Sam Owen and Logan Kerr for representing our school at the local trials. Sadly only 5 boys from the district could qualify. And as a follow up! Congratulations George on making it into the Albury Cricket team. Good luck at the pre-selection trials now in Deniliquin on March 12th. What a great sporting start to your year! Tennis George Sandral has also made it to the Albury PSSA Tennis Trials this Friday. He went to the pre-trials in Corowa last Monday after our swimming Carnival and qualified for the next level. Well done George!

Life Education Everyone enjoyed the visit from the ‘Life Education Van’. All students spend quality time with Jacqueline and learnt age appropriate skills to keep themselves safe and healthy. Thank you to Russel and Fred Kerr for picking up the van for us. Mobile Library Morning Tea for ‘National Year of Reading 2012’ The Mobile Library honoured us by choosing our school as their venue for launching ‘National Year of Reading 2012’. Veronica Sandral entertained us with a few choice words before launching her ‘rocket’ and Margaret from the Mobile Library kindly made a heart shaped cake and some goodies to share with the stu-dents after the launch. Sam and Ellie did a well spoken thank you and we all had a good time. So let’s keep the launch going and read, read, read!

Jenny Kerr’s Retirement Lunch The staff and many past staff had a teacher retirement dinner for Jenny Kerr on Sunday 19th February. 57 teachers past and present attended and sent Jenny on her way. It was a fine party and we wish Jenny well in her retirement. She is a committed community member and has already spent time volunteering and helping with swimming. She will always have the OCS kids at heart. National Partnership Primary Staffing help from National Partnership began on 20th February. Now we have 3 Maths and English classes across the morning every day. Monday: K-1 Mrs A Bruce; 2-3 Mrs Gorman; 456 Ms Outram Tuesday: K-1 Mrs A Bruce; 2-3 Mrs Gorman; 456 Ms Outram Wednesday: K-1 Mrs D Bruce; 2-3 Mrs Gorman; 456 Mrs Swann Thursday: K-1 Mrs A Bruce; 2-3 Mrs Gorman; 456 Ms Outram Friday: K-1 Mrs D Bruce; 2-3 Mrs Gorman; 456 Ms Outram Afternoon sessions will be K12 and 3456 with teachers as above minus Mrs Gorman.

Mrs Gorman will have some administration time under the new school set up. Mrs B Allsworth will be adding Creative Arts; Mr Longmire will be adding Sport. The Stephanie Alexander Program will continue this year on Tuesdays with Mrs D Bruce and Ms Outram. Our first week, included swimming days, but the rest of the week ran well and I can see such valuable teaching time coming up. It is a very exciting time for OCS edu-cation! We are still flexing the timetable but above, is it in a nutshell. Balldale District Swimming Carnival ‘Shine Your Light’ is our Oaklands motto and boy did we ‘Shine our Lights’ on Monday at the Balldale Dis-trict Carnival. Our team of Jesse Moloney, Zak Sartore, Stephanie Munro, Sophie Willis, Holly Arnold, Aaron Sandral, Matthew Sutcliffe, Darcy Owen, Xavier Bun-tin, Bethany Moloney, Brooklyn Moloney, Logan Kerr, George Sandral, Ellie Arnold, Crystal Bateman and Sam Owen swam their little hearts out. Poor old George came down with a bug and had to withdraw but he had a go at his freestyle. We hope he is better soon. Our 8 year olds were stars trundling down the pool in great style and even getting places! Our 9s did so well and some of these boys had to line up for junior events and they did well too. Our 10s lit up the pool going in all 4 strokes and the medley; our11s and 12s were down to Logan, Sam, Ellie and Crystal and they were the great-est of leaders and showed how to have a go at every-thing and give it all you’ve got. Then came the relays, where we ran out of seniors so 2 junior girls and boys had to swim in both events. Our students were as fit as mallee bulls. I was so proud of them. Not one student felt unable to face an event and I think they would have all done the medley at the end they were so keen! Many students got places in events and I will list these sepa-rately. Our point score was: 97 students 8-13: Corowa Blue 67 109 students 8-13: Small Schools 64 29 students 8-13: Oaklands 49 93 students 8-13: Corowa Gold 23 8 students 8-13: Urana 3 We won the Percentage Shield and came 3rd overall. Didn’t we do well! The other thing we won was a reputation for great effort and sportsmanship. I received many words of praise about our team and I was very proud of this. It was good to have the 4 Urana students join us in our tent and we all barracked hard for their efforts. Thank you to all the enthusiastic parents who always support our school at these events and did the timekeep-ing roster all day to perfection. Thank you to Frances who is the best team manager we could possibly have. And of course thank you to the TEAM for being my little shining lights. Well done!

It will be harder to organ-ise with fewer teachers. P&C have decided to cater and you will be getting information about this soon. Football fathers would be greatly appreciated as helpers and se-lectors. Peter Longmire will be organising the day for us this year. Do we have anyone who would like to be net-ball team manager for OCS on the day? Give it some thought. Date is:13th March. I have invited the 2 Urana girls to join us too. where we are taking an in-depth look at the factors which lead to poverty and poor access to food both lo-cally and internationally. It is a fascinating subject and I learn something new every time I teach it. At the mo-ment students are researching developing countries, the events which have lead them to their current situations and the actions which are being taken by the interna-tional community to help them. We are cooking food which is eaten in some of the developing countries we are studying. It is a great opportunity to remember how lucky we are!!

Fiona Marshall New Staff Member We welcome Nathaniel Miller as our new English Teacher at Oaklands. Nathaniel, and his wife Fiona, have arrived from Sydney. Internet Stranger Danger!

After tossing her books on the sofa, she decided to grab a snack and get on-line. She logged on under her screen name ByAngel213 . She checked her Buddy List and saw GoTo123 was on. She sent him an in-stant message: softball ByAngel213 : Hi. I'm glad you are on! I thought someone was following me home today. It was really weird! GoTo123 : LOL You watch too much TV. Why would someone be following you? Don't you live in a safe area? ByAngel213 : Of course I do. LOL I guess it was my imagination cuz' I didn't see anybody when I looked out. GoTo123 : Unless you gave your name out on-line. You haven't done that have you?’ ByAngel213 : Of course not. I'm not stupid you know. GoTo123 : Did you have a softball game after school today? ByAngel213 : Yes, and we won!! GoTo123 : That's great! Who did you play? ByAngel213 : We played the Hornets. LOL. Their uniforms are so gross! They look like bees. LOL GoTo123 : What is your team called? ByAngel213 : We are the Canton School Cats. We have tiger paws on our uniforms. They are really cool. GoTo123 : Did you pitch?

ByAngel213 : No, I play second base. I got to go. My homework has to be done before my parents get home. I don't want them mad at me. Bye! GoTo123 : Catch you later. Bye Meanwhile, GoTo123 went to the member menu and began to search for her profile. When it came up, he highlighted it and printed it out. Then he searched for the Canton Cats School Softball Team and found a photo of the team and their names. He took out a pen and began to write down what he knew about Angel so far. Her name: Shannon Birthday: Jan. 3, 1985 Age: 13 State where she lived: Victoria Hobbies: softball, chorus, skating and going shopping. Besides this information, he knew she lived in Canton because she had just told him. He knew she stayed by herself until 6:30 p.m. every afternoon until her parents came home

from work. He knew she played softball on Thursday afternoons on the school team, and the team was named the Canton Cats. Her favourite number 7 was printed on her jersey.

He knew she was in the eighth grade at the Canton High School. She had told him all this in the conversations they had on-line. He had enough information to find her now.

Page 8: Oaklands Urana Central Schools & Oaklands Community Newsletter › content › dam › doe › sws › sc… · nivals, as well as students selected in a range of sports to represent

Shannon didn't tell her parents about the incident on the way home from the park that day. She didn't want them to make a scene and stop her from walking home from the softball games. Parents were always overreacting and hers were the worst. It made her wish she was not an only child. Maybe if she had broth-ers and sisters, her parents wouldn't be so overprotective. By Thursday, Shannon had forgotten about the footsteps following her. Her game was in full swing when suddenly she felt someone staring at her. It was then that the memory came back. She glanced up from her second base position to see a man watching her closely. He was leaning against the fence behind first base and he smiled when she looked at him. He didn't look scary and she quickly dismissed the sudden fear she had felt. After the game, he sat on a seat while she talked to the coach. She noticed his smile once again as she walked past him. He nodded and she smiled back. He noticed her name on the back of her shirt. He knew he had found her. Quietly, he walked a safe distance behind her. It was only a few blocks to Shannon's home, and once he saw where she lived he quickly returned to the park to get his car. Now he had to wait. He decided to get a bite to eat until the time came to go to Shannon's house. He drove to a café and sat there until time to make his move. Shannon was in her room later that evening when she heard voices in the living room. " Shannon, come here," her father called. He sounded upset and she couldn't imagine why. She went into the room to see the man from the ballpark sitting on the sofa. "Sit down," her father began, "this man has just told us a most interesting story about you." Shannon sat back. How could he tell her parents anything? She had never seen him before today! "Do you know who I am, Shannon?" the man asked.. "No," Shannon answered. "I am a police officer and your online friend, GoTo123 ." Shannon was stunned. "That's impossible! GoTo123 is a kid my age! He's 14. And he lives in Western Australia!" The man smiled. "I know I told you all that, but it wasn't true. You see, Shannon, there are people on-line who pretend to be kids; I was one of them. But while others do it to injure kids and hurt them, I belong to a group of parents who do it to protect kids from predators. I came here to find you to teach you how danger-ous it is to talk to people on-line. You told me enough about yourself to make it easy for me to find you. You named the school you went to, the name of your softball team and the position you played. The num-ber and name on your jersey just made finding you a breeze." Shannon was stunned. "You mean you don't live in Western Australia?" He laughed. "No, I live in Abbotsford. It made you feel safe to think I was so far away, didn't it?" She nod-ded. Kids are taught not to tell anyone when they are alone, yet they do it all the time on-line. The wrong people trick you into giving out information a little here and there on-line. Before you know it, you have told them enough for them to find you without even realizing you have done it.
