Everyone is fed and now you’ve tidied up. You remember to open your child’s agenda and realize that he/she has homework! Yes, you would love to get that load of laundry in or watch the hockey game, but you know your child needs to get it done. Homework is work that helps support your child’s learning in the classroom. It is intended to reinforce some of the concepts that are currently being taught or it is encouraged to help with some essential skills such as reading, writing or mathematics. If you are spending more time than the recommended (10 mins per grade), then you may want to have a chat with your child’s teacher. Younger students require a little more support during homework time and during the Primary years, you want to guide them through the process with the goal of them gradually gaining more and more independence. At the same time, if your child does not regularly come home with homework, you may want to contact your child’s teacher to inquire a little further. He/she may be rushing through their work in order to get their homework done during class, or they might need more challenging work. At Christ the King, we recognize that your child/ren are busy in a number of after school programs and for this reason, we understand that there are nights that the homework may not be complete. If this is the case, please use your child’s agenda to communicate that to their teacher. However, it is essential that children understand the important skills of organization, time management and responsibility. Homework should and can encourage these skills. MANNERS Here are a few of the manners that have been discussed on the morning announcements and in the classroom. When not to wear a hat

At the table

During prayer

Indoors at home and at school

At formal events, such as a graduation

Church

In a restaurant

During the playing of our National Anthem or during prayer

Our JK-3 students also read the book “Do Onto Otters” which is a very cute story about following the Golden Rule. Be sure to ask them about it.

EQAO RESULTS Our 2013-2014 EQAO results are now available to the public. Our Grade 3’s were very successful in all areas with 96% of students achieving Level 3 in Reading, 96% in Writing and 91% in Mathematics. Our Grade 6 Writing increased by 5% from 78% to 83%, while our reading dropped to 66% and our Mathematics increased by 2% to 55%. The board and the province are dedicating a number of resources to support our Junior Mathematics learning. As a school, we continue to make this a priority in our upcoming School Learning Improvement Plan which will be on our school website by the end of October. PROGRESS REPORTS/ONLINE INTERVIEW BOOKINGS Little early to be talking about report cards, however, we wanted you to be aware that there will be two interview sessions this year. The first will be on the evening of November 13th and the morning of November 14th. In order to book your interview time, you will be sent a link via email. This new process will allow you to receive reminders, change your times and to link it to your personal calendar. INTRAMURALS Our intramurals are off to a great start. Currently our sport has been soccer, but in a few weeks we will switch to another sport or collaborative game. WEBSITE Thanks to some parent support, our website is up to date! We are working on being able to upload pictures of our highlights regularly. Check it out at www.tcdsb.org/christtheking

STUDENT IEP’S By October 16th, student IEP’s will go home with the students who have at least one program that is modified. If you have any questions regarding the contents, please contact your child’s teacher. The page indicating that you received it needs to be signed and returned as soon as possible. FOOD DRIVE Please support our Joint Thanksgiving Food Drive with St. Vincent de Paul. We are especially looking for the following items;

cereal, pudding / jello / fruit

cups, rice, small to medium packaged sugar, instant coffee only, tea bags, evaporated milk, juices, cookies and crackers. However, other items are also welcomed.

CTK WALKS TO SCHOOL ON WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 8th Please join your child on our official I-Walk Day. Officer Rich Diodati will be joining us, and staff will be meeting the students at specific locations. Every walker will win chances to enter our draw for some great prizes. Our meeting spots will be;

- South East corner of 41st and LakeShore Blvd at 8a.m.

- Thomas Barry (LakeShore and 31st) at 8a.m. - Vincent Massey (Daisy Avenue & east of

29th) at 8a.m. We will be walking on LakeShore Blvd to pick up any other students along the way.

HALLOWEEN A separate communication will be going home regarding all the Halloween activities that will be planned for October 31st. However, as you are purchasing your costumes, please remember that no toy items such as guns and swords are permitted. We will also be having our annual parade in the morning for parents/guardians, so be sure to put it in your calendars!

Encourage your child to self-

advocate! Students need to

voice their concern to adults,

including teachers in a

respectful manner.

DON’T MISS IT! Come and learn more about the academic instruction happening at Christ the King!

For our next CSAC meeting, on October 20th, the council and the school will be providing an evening during which the students will be having fun doing some Halloween crafts while the parents are invited to learn more about the academic side of their child’s school. EQAO/CAT4 scores will be touched upon, as well as important details about our School Learning Improvement Plan. In addition, learn how you can best support your child during this academic year. DATE: October 20th at 7p.m. followed by our CSAC meeting. Everyone welcome and refreshments and crafts provided by CSAC.

PARENT PD In the next few months, we will be providing a night that will focus on a number of parenting strategies that we are also focusing on as a school. These will include Anxiety and Mindfulness, and helping your child develop a growth mindset. These areas are also currently being promoted at the board level. If you are looking for an excellent book on how to help your child develop a growth mindset (it is also a good read with lots of sports and well-known examples). It is called Mindset and it is written by Carol Dweck. Here are a few tips that she discusses in her book on how you can respond and engage with your child’s learning in a different and more effective way.

1- Show your child that you value the learning and improvement, not just quick, perfect performance. When your child does something quickly and perfectly or gets an easy A-Grade in school, you as a parent should not tell your child how great they are. Otherwise, your child will equate being smart with quick and easy success, and they will become afraid of challenges. It’s about the journey of learning and your support along the way, not immediate success.

2- Do not shield your children from challenges, mistakes and struggles. Instead, parents should teach their children to love challenges. When sitting at home discussing their homework they can say things like “This is hard. What fun!’ or ‘This is too easy. It’s no fun.” It is vital that parents teach their children to embrace mistakes and to see failure as an investable part of the learning process. The conversations parents have with their children should focus on the strategies they deployed when they were stuck and how they overcame a difficulty. This is equally important when they are reading at home as well as when they are working on their Math homework.

.

No matter what your ability is, effort is what ignites that ability and turns into accomplishment (C. Dweck)

“A Message From Officer Rich”

When I visit your school and teach your children, I ask the students why do we have rules or

laws. The answer is that we have rules and laws to keep us ALL safe. When we do not follow

or obey rules/laws we are no longer safe! I’m respectfully requesting that ALL parents,

guardians and grandparents to PLEASE follow/obey the parking signs in and around the school,

in order to keep your child and ALL other students SAFE!

The first month back to school is always a hectic and exciting time. Traffic-wise, things can get

particularly busy, especially near schools. For the safety of all children we are strongly

encouraging everyone to drive carefully and obey traffic signs around school grounds. If

possible, we are encouraging everyone to walk, cycle or carpool to school. If you must drive,

consider parking a few blocks away and walk the rest of the way. “NO STOPPING 8am – 5pm

SCHOOL DAYS”

Fine $60

Fine $40

I am respectfully requesting that EVERYONE follow & obey the parking/traffic signs,

so that we may reduce the chances of having an accident and that we may ALL stay

safe. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE PARKING ISSUES AT YOUR SCHOOL HAVE BEEN

BROUGHT TO THE ATTENTION OF THE PARKING CONTROL/AUTHORITY.
