Stephen Ministry Is Here to Serve2016 has been an active year for Stephen Ministers of First United Methodist. Earlier this year, seven new Stephen Ministers were commissioned and just a few weeks ago a new Stephen Leader was commissioned.

Allen Bedell of First United Methodist Church was among the pastors and congregation leaders at a Stephen Series Leader’s Training Course (LTC) this year. Allen attended the seven-day training event hosted by the St. Louis-based

Stephen Ministries organization. Participants came from across the U.S. and Canada to learn how to implement and direct Stephen Ministry, a system of Christian caregiving, in their congregations.

Our Stephen Ministers are provided extensive training to be a listening ear for someone who is suffering, lonely or in need of special attention. Stephen Ministers are not counselors but instead a Christian presence to be with someone during difficult times. If you would like a Stephen Minister for you or someone you know, contact any Stephen Minister or the church office at (501) 623-6668.

Stephen Ministers primarily serve in a one-to-one Christian caregiving role. They will also be found at the Caring Place, Open Arms Food Pantry, hospital visitation, and in other ministries. Remember, Stephen Ministers are here to serve.

XYZ (Extra Years of Zest)The next XYZ potluck lunch will be October 13th at 11:30 am in the Christian Life Center’s Shelton Room. Please join us for fellowship, fun and connecting with old and new friends. XYZ meets the second Thursday each month except December and summer. We hope to see you then!

Our Neighbors The Word became flesh and blood, and moved into the neighborhood. We saw the glory with our own eyes, the one-of-a-kind glory, like Father, like Son;We are partnering with our Wesleyan brothers and sisters at Visitor’s Chapel AME and Haven UMC. We would like to encourage committed members of our church to worship not only here on Sundays, but also with Visitors Chapel (319 Church Street) on the second Sunday of October and November, 11:00 a.m., and Haven UMC (107 Burroughs) the third Sunday of October and November, 11:00 a.m. Last month we had approximately 18 members who worshipped with our neighbors! Please prayerfully consider extending your time to worship and be an active participant in getting to more fully know our neighbors. For more information, contact Teresa Holt, 501-623-6668, ext. 116.

Chancel Choir/ Seasonal Singers On Wednesday, October 5, all Seasonal Singers are invited to join the Chancel Choir from 6:30 to 7:30 pm to rehearse music for our Advent Lessons and Carols services and the Grand/Central Community Christmas Concert. We will be performing some wonderful music including John Rutter’s children’s musical, The Reluctant Dragon. This is a great time for newcomers to try out our choral program! There is no audition required, just a desire to praise and worship God through music.

Bell Choir Ministry Both of our adult bell choirs, The Chancel Ringers (rehearsals at 11:00 am on Thursdays) and Sanctuary Bells (rehearsals at 5:15 pm on Wednesdays) have started back and are rehearsing some great pieces for upcoming services. It is not too late to join! We still have spots available in both bell choirs, so if playing hand bells is your calling, or if you are intrigued, please join us on Wednesday evenings or Thursday mornings in the bell room, located on the lower level of the historic Sanctuary building. We look forward to seeing you!

Youth Choir The new Youth Choir has also begun rehearsals. The Youth Choir has 21 youth members signed up right now, but more members are always welcome to join! There is no audition required. We especially need male voices. If you are a member of youth and play an instrument, please let me know! A youth praise band is in the works, as well. The Youth Choir will be singing in upcoming services, both by itself and with the Chancel Choir. In addition, the Youth Choir will be featured during the Grand/Central Community Christmas Concert. Rehearsals are on Sunday afternoons from 4:00 - 5:00 in the choir room.

Children’s Music Ministry Kidz Praize, our 1st through 5th grade choir, and The Quarter Notes, our choir for children ages three to five, are off to a great start! Both children’s choirs will be singing in worship services on Sunday, October 9, the Children’s Sabbath Sunday. The kids are working very hard and making wonderful music already! In addition, Kidz Praize will start learning hand bells on our new 20 piece, chromatic set of children’s hand bells. Many thanks go to Kelley Lovelady, Melinda Shunk, and Sheree O’Rorke for leading this ministry.

Children’s Sabbath is a special day where kids grades Kindergarten to 5th grade are invited to participate in worship by volunteering to be greeters, ushers, liturgists, read prayers and more! Please contact Micelle Wilkins [email protected] or 501-318-3977 for more information or to sign up your child.

The Offering Well Our FUMC Kidz Sunday school offering, commonly known to our children as “The Offering Well”, will go toward helping children and families at Methodist Family Health. Methodist Family Health provides hope

for Arkansas children and families facing emotional and behavioral challenges. They now have a local office/counseling center right here in Hot Springs! Our very own Lauren English is now working for them as an Outpatient Therapist! They have helped many children and families in Garland County over the years. Please be sure your child remembers to bring an offering each Sunday to drop in the “offering well” during their Sunday school class to help with this important mission.

Kidz ROCK BIG THANK YOU TO OUR local firemen, John, Jared, and Tyler who came to talk with us about what they do to help others in our community and about us “Widening Our Circle”. They gave an incredible overview of what they do, let us tour the fire truck and then read scripture to us about how God longs for us to reach out to others in need and to share His love to those outside our own friends and family. In October, we will talk more about what it means to “Widen Your Circle”

Our next mission will be October 11th from 5—6:30pm in the Christian Life Center. We will eat pizza, play games and learn all about sharing God’s love and grace with the children in our schools other than our circle of friends and to those in our community as well! To help with this

mission, please bring a bag or two of candy to help us prepare for our upcoming Trunk – or – Treat community outreach event!

Parents: We NEED volunteers for October 11th from 4:45-6:30! Please contact Stacey McKuin, Leslie Sarver, or Michelle Wilkins if you can help.

Record Breaking Attendance! Our Wednesday after-school programs, W.A.K. and CLUB 45, have reached a new high this year with 100 kids in attendance, plus 15 volunteers! We are so excited about all the new families that are experiencing our church for the first time through these programs! We pray that they will want to learn more about the church and how they can worship God and find opportunities to serve Him through FUMC! Please be in prayer for this ministry to continue to thrive and grow in the years to come. If you are feeling called to serve God and our church by reaching out to children and their families, please contact Michelle Wilkins to see how you can help on Wednesday afternoons.
