October 2016 Connecting to Christ through discovery, growth, and service. The New Normal A message from Pastor Amanda Wagoner Meade It is finally starng to feel a lile bit like Fall, my favorite season of the year. It is a good reminder that the world is sll moving on all around us, inving us to move forward too, thoughully, enjoying the season you are in right now. Autumn also feels so normal to me, which is a great feeling aſter a tough and painful season for myself, the church leadership and our church family as a whole. Normal this year looks different than last year but sll feels good and more importantly hopeful. Normal now means Chad and I have learned to work together as a team, relying on each other in ways we never have before and discovering we really like it. The new normal means more listening and less talking, which is a challenge for both of us. It means discover giſts for areas of ministry we had never tried before. Chad did his first wedding this summer and I wrote three stewardship sermons. We did worship planning together so we know the schedule through Christmas. The new normal also means seeing new faces stepping up and sharing ministry at the church in new places. As George Ellis steps down from nearly a decade of volunteering me, talent and the to our communicaons team, he steps up to lead our Road Runners ministry along with Phil Helm. Joining Melana will be Michael Hillard helping with the newsleer, Susan Proctor with the bullen and media room, and the Lawheads with our posters and brochures. Downstairs in Jr. Worship we have four new leaders including McKena Alford, Billy Fulton, Dean Harris and Danny Needham. We also started a new curriculum called The Story, with lesson prep by Stephanie Densford and Addie Williams. At the same me we are also starng to dream about preparing that space for Worship and Wonder for the new year. I saw new names, like the Turk-Gagels offering to help pack backpacks this year and new addional leadership, in Lisa Ellis, step on our hospitality team. I have seen people volunteer in the office for stewardship. But all that is normal isn’t new, the normal also includes preparing for some of our favorite and fun events of the year like the Treat Trail for Halloween. We will welcome new visitors at our regular Connect Luncheon. It means inving back from summer break into our building scouts and Special Olympics, yoga and Tri Kappa. It means our new normal is busy and as faithful as ever. OCTOBER 2016

I am a Hoosier, born in Indiana. I graduated from Columbus East High School, IVTC, and IU. I was raised by wonderful, loving, and church based parents; my mother still lives in the family home in Columbus. I have three younger siblings, all married to wonderful spouses. Known as Aunt M to the older nieces and nephews, the younger ones call me Aunt Meme, One great-nephew who turns two in December complete my family.

I got the love of sports from my Papaw, he liked sports; he usually had two, or three, games going on the TV and a couple of radios. My favorite sports, though, are football and baseball. I loved playing league softball, volleyball, and bowling. I am a Jeffersonville Red Devils fan now, however it is tough not to root for those Olympians. I have been a fan of the IU Hoosiers for a long time, but admit I like University of Cincinnati Bearcats and Thomas More Saints. It can get a little exciting at my house during football season since Drew and I are Colts fans, Kaitlyn cheers for the Steelers and Luke is a Bengals fan.

My first job was cleaning spark plugs for my father when he worked on his old cars or at his service station. I got my love for old cars from him; my ideal car would be a 34 Ford 3 window coupe in candy apple red with a 302 Ford motor.

Other jobs I had when I was still in school were corn detasseling, cleaning out school buses, working at a Stuckey’s. I also worked at a retirement center, cleaned houses and office duties. After college I worked for a General Surgeon; then I got the opportunity to work with in a Neurology group and was there ten years. I trained in Biofeedback for pain management and also helped get a Multiple Sclerosis support group established. Before working at the church I also worked in Ophthalmology, Kent Feed, a medical supply store, and a pharmacy.

In 1988 I went to a high school friend’s hog roast. I talked with an interesting guy ~ he liked music and the Hoosiers. The next weekend he called me and we dated for two years and then were married. I was now a Jeffersonville resident. Our daughter, Kaitlyn, was born five years later.

Drew grew up at First Christian Church until about the time FCC moved to its present location from downtown Jeffersonville. His father, Norman, became the choir director at Howard Park Christian church in Clarksville, where we attended. After my father-in-law’s death we decided to look for a new church home.

Ray and Edith Brownfield became instrumental in us visiting FCC (Drew had grown up with their son, Chuck.) We, yes me too, joined the choir and the Bell choir. Rosy Callahan got me involved in the Membership committee, and I also was on the Evangelism committee with Linda Kemper. I got involved in VBS, first because of Kaitlyn, but now because I love it. I have also spent lots of hours in the FCC kitchen with Lorie Nevils. I have been on a lot of FCC teams ~ I love my church!

About six years ago I had a conversation with Gary Straub about the church office needing help until a replacement could be found for Lorna, as she was retiring. I said I could help out some if needed. I am still here. I have found my medical background to be handy as I have taken numerous blood pressure checks and given Vitamin B12 injections.

I have a few hobbies, gardening, cooking, and reading. I like Fiesta ware dishes, and also have a love of all things Wizard of Oz, if you didn’t know that. My favorite play is “Wicked”. I surprised everyone by not naming our daughter Dorothy Gale. Kaitlyn is grateful that her dad named her!!

I own my own pair of ruby red slippers. I have met several of the original Munchkins and Jerry Maren (one of the Lollipop Guild members) signed a picture for me.

Do you like to play Monopoly or UNO? I have the best versions ~ Wizard of Oz, of course. My cookie jar is the friendly Lion. A quilt, a flying monkey (not real, of course), and a hot air balloon are also in my collection.

I love rainbows ~ God’s promises are the best!!
