Hello Martensville,

It was great to see so many people out to the MHS Awards Day and the Meet the Teacher BBQ on September 26th. Our next formal chance for parents and teachers to connect is on October 26th and 27th at the Parent Teacher Conferences. Conferences are from 5:30 until 8:00 pm both nights. No appointments are necessary. Meetings take place in teacher classrooms.

The second evening of Parent Teacher Interviews will be of particular interest to parents of grade 11 and 12 students. Once again, numerous post-secondary institutions from across Saskatchewan including the University of Saskatchewan, University of Regina, Saskatchewan Polytechnic (formerly SIAST), and the Canadian Armed Forces will be on site at MHS waiting to provide information to parents and students. This has become a much anticipated annual gathering for parents and students. Please drop by and take advantage of the great post-secondary planning opportunity.

Things are getting busy with fall sports. District Cross Country running will take place in Delisle on Tuesday, October 11th. Provincial Cross Country Running will be held in the same location, the following Saturday. On the weekend of October 21st and 22nd, just about all of our fall sports teams will be involved in some significant way here at home. Boys and Girls Soccer will be playing at home. Sr. and Jr. Girls Volleyball will be hosting tournaments and we are waiting to confirm that our football team will be hosting a home play-off game. Our plan is to use this time to celebrate both our high school athletics program, but also to officially open Wilson Field! A Grand Opening announcement will be forthcoming soon!

Our Home Ec and IA programs moved into their new labs this week. Della Muench (Home Ec) PAA Labs and David Fossum (IA) are very happy to be back into proper teaching areas. We have ended up with two commercial kitchens, a textiles lab, a welding lab, a woodworking lab, a drafting classroom, and an outdoor tarmac for eventual larger-scale construction projects. These instructional spaces are sure to become centerpieces of our program offerings.

Further to new facilities, our theatre continues to be utilized exciting new ways. Ms. Beck and the MHS Choir are rehearsing for a performance of our first-ever musical, You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown. There will be evening performances on Friday, November 18th and Saturday, November 19th. Matinees will be held for students. Tickets will be on sale at our main office.

On October 28th, we are pleased to brining the High School OSAC performance of “Still Falling” to the students at MHS. There will be a morning performance for our grade 9 and 10s, and an afternoon performance for our grade 11 and 12s. The play deals with issues of mental health, wellness, and hope among teens.

This year grade 9 students were offered the option guitar lessons as one of their elective courses. It has been incredible to see the enthusiasm of this first round of guitar students. In just 30 days, the first group of students have become proficient musicians capable of playing a common popular songs, applying musical theory, and preparing their own musical compositions…all on a guitar. Hat’s off to them and to our music teacher Ms. Worman!

Finally, I wish to share that our theme for this school year is alive and well. We began the year focusing on the theme of “New Ground.” For us, the theme represents the spirit of working together to make

incredible learning opportunities for our students in our new facilities. From sports, to arts, we are well on the way to maximizing our new ground.

On behalf of the staff at Martensville High School, I wish you a Happy Thanksgiving.

Brad Nichol

On Wednesday, November 2, 2016, all Grade 9 students across the country will be taking part in "Take Our Kids to Work Day". Grade 9 students will accompany their parent/guardian (or an alternate adult chosen by their parent/guardian) to their workplace for the duration of the work day. The intention of this national program is to encourage students to start thinking about their own career direction and the educational choices they need to make. It also allows parents/guardians and children the opportunity to share an understanding of the parents/guardians' work world. Consent forms and further information will be provided to Grade 9 students by their Health 9 teachers. Questions about TOKW Day can be directed to the student's Health 9 teacher: Whitney Anderson, Breanne Cooper, Kate McKinnon, or Quelsa Oliver.

Prairie Spirit Accident Insurance

Prairie Spirit provides accident insurance through Industrial Alliance Insurance that provides insurance coverage if your child has an accident at school during the school day. Children are also covered if the accident occurs at a time when they are involved in any extra-curricular activities before or after school hours, including school trips. In the unfortunate circumstances of needing this insurance, the school will need to be notified of the accident immediately so that they can submit an incident report to the insurance company and provide the parent or guardian with a claim form. The parent or guardian will need to pay any expenses initially, then ask the appropriate medical authority to complete and sign the form. The parent will then submit the form directly to Alliance Insurance. The claim process is between the parent or guardian and the insurance company. Industrial Alliance Insurance does offer additional KidsPlus Accident Insurance should you wish

to purchase it. Details can be found in the KidsPlus Accident Insurance Package.
