In2011,OpenCourseWarewillbefiveyearsoldinSpain.

TheUniversityofCantabriawasoneofthefirstSpanishuniversi/esinthisproject:wesignedtheConsor/umOCW‐Universiain2006,andwehostedthesecondOCWCGlobalmee/ngin2007.

Fromthestart,ouruniversitydidnotseetheOCWprojectasaburden,oranobliga/on,butasanopportunitytogrowandtoimprove.

Today,fiveyearslater,OCWisalivelyprojectinouruniversity,withanimportantrepercussionineduca/oninnova/onandwithagreatcapacitytodynamizetheac/vityofthoseprofessorswithli+leknowledgeotthepossibili/esofe‐learning.

OpenCourseWarehasbeenabigincen/vefortheimprovementofeduca/oninnova/oninSpanishuniversi/esand,inpar/cular,attheUniversityofCantabria.

Fromtheverybeginningouruniversityknewthatifwewantedtoshowopencourseswehadtodoitwell.OCWisnotonlyawaytospreadknowledge,butalsoawaytoshowhowwedoit.Now,wehavebe+ercourses,andprofessorswithbe+erknowledgeofthepossibili/esofe‐learning.

From2007to2009weuploadedsinglecourses.Now,wehavebeguntoworknotonlywithindividualprofessors,butwiththefacul/esatouruniversity.TheSpanishuniversityisnowintheprocessofintroducingtheneweduca/onalsystem(Bolognaprocess)andOCWisthebestwaytoencourageprofessorstouseallthepossibili/esofe‐learning.Wehavemadeagreementswiththreefacul/essofar,andwehopethatinthenextyearswecouldhavemorefacul/eswithalltheirmaterialsonOCW.

Toshowopencoursesisgoodfortheusers(becauseyoucanfindalotofinforma/onaboutalotofsubjects)butevenfortheuniversi/esandprofessors.Atouruniversitytherearealotofprofessorswhohavereceivede‐mailsfromotheruniversi/es,askingques/onsaboutthecoursesonOCW.Inaddi/on,weknowthatourprofessorshavealotofworktodo:tradi/onalclasses,tutorship,e‐learning,scien/ficresearch,etc.So,wethinkthatiftheydon'treceiveanyremunera/onfortheirworkonOCW,theyshouldgetsomeotherresults.OneoftheseisanISBNnumberfortheircourses,giventhattheyarecompletepublica/onswhichalotofworkhasgoneinto.

OCWisabigtool.Youcanuseitonlyasaplacetoputthecourseson,buttherearealotofprofessorsthatareusingOCWfortheirtradi/onalclassesintheclassroom:inOCWyouhaveallyourteachingmaterials,prac/ces,exams,readings,etc.andyoucanusethemallwithjustacomputer,theinternetandavideoprojector.So,OCWisatoolwithalotoffuturepossibili/es.

ItisobviousthataprojectlikeOCWneedsamul/disciplinaryunittouploadthecourses.In2007wehadonlyoneperson,butnowwehaveacompleteunitwith:‐OCWcoordinator‐Graphicdesigner‐Mul/mediamanager‐Soawareprogrammer(EduCommons)Nowadays,wearenotonlyworkingforOCW,butforotherlearningsystemslikeBlackboard,MoodleandWebTV.

In2006and2007weonlyhad2,000visitsamonth.Nowwehavemorethan35,000visitsamonthandrising.Likewise,weknowthatthecoursesareusedbyprofessors,studentsandself‐taughtpeopleallovertheworld.Thatisthebestrewardforus,becauseweworkdaybydaytomakeOCWbe+er.Finally,weareworkingnowonaprojecttosendtoeveryprofessortheresultsoftheircourses,withfullinforma/onaboutthewebvisits.
