Our email response to David Shapiro’s Column on Sunday, June 10 in the Stat Advertiser.

The Hawaii Republican Party may surprise you this year. I just provided compliance training to some very bright and ambitious candidates.

The party is going for targeted races instead of the shotgun approach. There are some very good candidates if anyone will take the time to listen to anything but the Democrat Party line.

As far as the financial health of the Republican Party, you may be surprised when you see their next spending report.

I’ve always known you be fair, so before you write your next article about the Hawaii Republican Party you might want to talk to our chair, Shirlene Ostrov. She has brought a party that was on the verge of monetary and ideological bankruptcy back to a point where we can start to build a viable, vibrant party again.

Shirlene has worked to bring people back into the party, including major donors. For the first time in 10 years the party has a current platform so people know where we stand. We no longer have a mortgage on our office space - it is now fully paid off. All of this in just one year.

So, yeah, we may not win 10 seats this year, but we are far from the dismal mess that has been portrayed by the paper.
