ON THE DRY SIDE JUNE 2016
Minutes of the MBACSS Board Meeting, May15, 2016 By Stan Verkler
Note: On the Dry Side publishes draft board minutes for review and approval by the board at beginning of each meeting.
Attendance: Naomi Bloss, Tom Karwin, Sharon Lucchesi (nominee), Ruth Pantry, Gary Stubblefield, Stan Verkler
Guests: Jorge Quinonez, Laurie _____
Treasurer’s Report: Ruth Pantry reported on the Spring Show & Sale, and summarized expenses and balance after expenses. Note: The Treasurer’s Report is not published, but is available to members upon request to Treasurer Ruth Pantry.
Program: Manson Waters was not in attendance, but will provide updated information for publication in the newsletter.
April Show & Sale
Discussion of minor problems and general success of the event.
The following members will be recognized for their exceptional help in coordinating and organizing the Show & Sale:
Joe & Sally Ramseck; Gary & Ellen Stubblefield; Janet Parks; Ron & Leona Harris; and Linda & Manson Waters.
Future Projection Screen for VFW Hall
Discussion focused on the best screen size, given the dimensions of the audience area (approximately 45 feet wide, 75 feet long, 15 feet high). A related consideration is the brightness of the Society’s old projector (currently not in use) and its new projector. A bright output will be needed for a larger screen area.
On the Dry Side
Incorrect email addresses have blocked delivery of the newsletter to some members. Ruth Pantry will call those members by phone to clarify their email addresses.
Field Tripping
The opportunity for a spring trip has passed. Planning now will consider a late fall trip to the UC Botanical Garden at Berkeley, the UC Davis Botanical Garden, or Lotusland in Santa Barbara.
Survey of MBACSS Members
The board will distribute the Member Survey (published in the May issue of On the Dry Side) during the general meeting. Sharon Lucchesi will tabulate responses, and the June issue of On the Dry Side will present the results for discussion by the board and members.
Plans for June Meeting
During the June meeting, we will recognize the anniversary of the founding of the MBACSS with KFC chicken and Corralitos sausage, provided by the Society, to go with other foods provided by members, and a Silent Auction of exceptional plants provided by members. Proceeds will be allocated as follows: 75% to the owner, 25% to the Society.
In Memoriam — Alma E. Munger, 1931–2016 Alma Munger was a valued, long-time member and past president (2002–2003) of the Monterey Bay Area Cactus & Succulent Society, a dedicated and successful gardener, and a good friend.
From her obituary: “Alma retired from the United States Postal Service after 30 years of civil service. She was proud to be one of the first 250 women to be a mail carrier in the United States and was a past president of the USPS Carriers Union. She was a leader in the Girl Scouts of America and 4-H and a past president of the Monterey Bay Cactus and Succulent Society. She also attended classes at Cabrillo College for painting and was an adult education student to learn the art of ceramics.”
The Santa Cruz Sentinel published Alma’s obituary notice, available here.
In addition, the online memorial for Alma E. Munger is available here.
We cherish her memory and mourn her passing.
